EU Directives for Locomotive Switching and Communications Systems
Does anyone know what Directives would apply the electronic switching control systems and communications systems used in railway systems. some of this equipment would be installed on the locomotive, some in a control center some in train stations. I would thin the LVD and EMC directives would apply or is there a directive specific to this type of equipment. Any communications systems that use the airways or PSTN would fall under the R&TTE, but is there anything if the communications is via the rails. Thanks! On defense of the use of symbols: I haven't read every posting on this thread, but as I understand it, for the indoor use symbol, even the original poster has since stated that he was pretty sure what it meant. It seemed to me that his original question was mainly focussed on where it came from; i.e. he just wanted to confirm that it "officially" means no more and no less than what it seems to mean. Personally, IF/when a warning is required at all (separate issue!) I would much prefer a symbol than some small print in a language that I can't read. I would not want to disturb the IP scheme already in place using the IEC 60529 for Ingress Protection (IP). No marking is already established as meaning inadequate IP. There will be no improvement in understanding between the symbol and the IP marking because the use of one excludes the use of the other - or am I missing something? I am essentially satisfied - remembering that my experience is almost all limited to ITE and electronic sub-assemblies where someone following me is concerned with the enclosure. I am also in agreement with Rich Nute's earlier comment, "So, it would seem to me that outdoor products should be identified; if not specifically identified for outdoor use, then the product is for indoor use." European voltages and apology
I thought I had taught my employers email to recognize postings from the forum and NOT send automatic replies in my absence on vacation. It seems not to have worked, my apologies to the board. Instead, the new "harmonised voltage limits" in Europe are now: 230V -10% +6% (i.e. 207.0 - 243.8V) in most of Europe (the former 220V nominal countries), and 230V -6% +10% (i.e. 216.2 - 253.0V) in UK (former 240V nominal). This is really a fudge and means there is no real change of supply voltage, only a change in the "label", with no incentive for electricity supply companies to actually change the supply voltage. To cope with both sets of limits an equipment will therefore need to cover 230V +/-10% i.e. 207-253V. This will actually become the official limit for the whole of the EU in 2003. Ian, Up to 1/4/2004 both standards - EN61010-1:1993 and EN61010-1:2001 - can be used for presumption of conformity to the essential requirements of the LVD. >From 1/4/2004 , EN61010-1:2001 is the only standard that must be used to show compliance for products that are still put on the EU market from that date.
