Re: [Fwd: RE: Steel Ball For Impact Test]
Jasmine- You can order a stainless steel 2" ball online from McMaster-Carr for $28. I did, and received it the next day via standard UPS! (Those test equipment labs want $95-$150 for the same ball with a loop soldered on.) www.mcmaster.com catalog page# 3184 (steel balls) Stainless Steel (C440) P/N 9529K53 , 2" dia. This ball weighs 520g, which is within the 60950 spec of 500g +- 25g. I had a buddy at a machine shop drill a hole through the middle so I could run a cord through it for pendulum use, too. (Drilling out the hole brought the weight down to almost 500g.) Any weight discrenpancy can be dealt with by adjusting the drop height, of course. Have fun making an impact for your company! RE: Steel Ball For Impact Test
As an alternative to a swinging ball, consider making no changes to the ball and dropping it vertically using a tube. The ball can be held in place in the tube using a bolt (or a similar object) as a stop. Pull the bolt and the ball drops from the exact height required by the standard. The test is very repeatable as long as the tube is vertical and the diameter is slightly larger than the ball. We bought ours from a bearing manufacturer several years ago. It met the spec and was very cost effective ($6.00 rings a bell). > -- > From: > jim_bac...@mail.monarch.com[SMTP:jim_bac...@mail.monarch.com] > Reply To: jim_bac...@mail.monarch.com > Sent: Tuesday, March 21, 2000 7:29 AM > To: Jasmine TAN; emc-p...@ieee.org > Subject: Re:Steel Ball For Impact Test > > > forwarded for Jasmine TAN.Jim > > Reply Separator > Subject:Steel Ball For Impact Test > Author: "Jasmine TAN" > Date: 3/21/00 6:53 PM > > Hi, > > Does anyone has any recommended source on "Steel ball" for Impact testing > as listed in UL60950. > > Thanks for your recommendation. > > Regards, > Jas > > > > > --- > This message is from the IEEE EMC Society Product Safety > Technical Committee emc-pstc discussion list. > > To cancel your subscription, send mail to: > majord...@ieee.org > with the single line: > unsubscribe emc-pstc > > For help, send mail to the list administrators: > Jim Bacher: jim_bac...@mail.monarch.com > Michael Garretson:pstc_ad...@garretson.org > > For policy questions, send mail to: > Richard Nute: ri...@ieee.org > > --- This message is from the IEEE EMC Society Product Safety Technical Committee emc-pstc discussion list. This item can be obtained from a number of US sources - such as ED&D - but cheap they are not as we just found out when we boought one!!
