Re: [Fwd: RE: Steel Ball For Impact Test]

2000-03-21 Thread Dirk Atama

Jasmine-

You can order a stainless steel 2" ball online from
McMaster-Carr for $28. I did, and received it the
next day via standard UPS! (Those test equipment
labs want $95-$150 for the same ball with a loop
soldered on.)

www.mcmaster.com catalog page# 3184 (steel balls)
Stainless Steel (C440) P/N 9529K53 , 2" dia.

This ball weighs 520g, which is within the 60950 spec
of 500g +- 25g. I had a buddy at a machine shop
drill a hole through the middle so I could run a cord
through it for pendulum use, too. (Drilling out the
hole brought the weight down to almost 500g.) Any
weight discrenpancy can be dealt with by adjusting the
drop height, of course.

Have fun making an impact for your company!

Dirk

RE: Steel Ball For Impact Test

2000-03-21 Thread WOODS

As an alternative to a swinging ball, consider making no changes to the ball
and dropping it vertically using a tube. The ball can be held in place in
the tube using a bolt (or a similar object) as a stop. Pull the bolt and the
ball drops from the exact height required by the standard. The test is very
repeatable as long as the tube is vertical and the diameter is slightly
larger than the ball.

This item can be obtained from a number of US sources - such as ED&D
- but
cheap they are not as we just found out when we boought one!!

A cheaper source is probably your local heavy industrial equipment
service
organisation - a 2 inch diameter ball bearing is more or less what
you
need.

As for tolerances: if it is a little light or heavy then I am sure
a
compentent workshop can fix that with a welding torch or a grinder -

especially if you get a loop for the cord added at the same time!

We bought ours from a bearing manufacturer several years ago. It met the
spec and was very cost effective ($6.00 rings a bell).
