Re: [EVDL] VW responds to diesel scandal, says “the future is electric” | Ars Technica
I have a queued post on this I completed, coming soon. BTW, while the e-Golf is nice, and its drivers like their EV, VW has always been an EV talker, but an ice walker/do'er. Ice issues are not really a evdl charter item and may be consider OT. But I was thinking, there could be a lot of diesel ice coming available for conversion because of VW's cheat. I have several different interesting topics to be posted. I had seen a slow down on some EV maker's PR, and I was concerned that it was just their way of holding back until the U.S. elections are over, and the new year when automakers will need carbon credits again to sell ice. But several automakers that were on the fence are now committing to electrified model line up with an EV model (things are changing, for the better, and I am glad my fears were wrong). Was it the VW debacle that got everyone going on electrification? Maybe. I am just glad we are moving in the less-petroleum-based-chemical-fuel direction ... I think the key word in that sentence is "rear-wheel". Technically, the P90D with its 0-60 time of 2.8 seconds is all wheel drive. The P85 is rear-wheel drive, but it's 0-60 time is 4.2 seconds. A little weasely, but the statement is technically true. If this is to be believed...it could be absolutely huge! Anybody here have any further information and / or insight? http://arstechnica.com/cars/2015/10/vw-responds-to-diesel-scandal-says-the-future-is-electric/ If it turns out the way I'm sure all us here would hope it would, those "rogue engineers" would be deserving of a Peace Prize. (And I guarantee you, the engineers did not take it upon themselves to do this sort of thing...at the very least, management made plain that they didn't give a damn how the tests were passed and the engineers would be out of work if the tests weren't passed. If you ever find yourself in a similar position, quit then and there, because you can be sure that management is setting you up to take the fall.) b& -- next part -- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... [EVDL] Emotorworks (Juicebox) lack of customer support
At the end of June I bought the JuiceBox 40 Pro EVSE from Emotorwerks. I paid $600, and I think that's enough that I'm entitled to a little customer support. But I've 4 sent requests to their support address and never received a satisfactory answer. In some cases I got a reply, but the reply was "so-and-so is the expert on this and will get back to you and answer your question" and then I never heard from so-and-so. Before sending this message, I complained to them about the fact that I wasn't getting any support, and that complaint also went unanswered. So, at this point, I feel I should warn other EV drivers not to buy from Emotorwerks if you want to be able to ask any questions or get any help with your equipment. I'm sorry to do it. I thought this was a promising company with an interesting piece of equipment at an attractive price. They are very proud of the fact that it's open source. Anyone know where to find the source? I guess I should read it if I ever want to get an answer to my main question, which is "How does the unit manage the charging current limit in cases where the connection to Emotorwerks's servers is not completely reliable?" The 21-year-old driver of a Tesla Model S is paying the price for honking at people trying to cross the street, Apple Daily reported Sunday. The tattooed man was driving the expensive electric sports sedan near the intersection of Portland Street and Soy Street in Mong Kok at about 1 a.m. Saturday. Several men, reportedly of South Asian origin, were about to cross the road. The motorist blew his horn at them, which appeared to anger the group. The men chased the car and dented its rear with rubber sticks and steel objects. Patrolling police officers spotted the attack and later arrested an 18-year-old suspect. The Tesla driver declined to press charges. He said he will pay the repair cost, estimated to be several thousand Hong Kong dollars. The electric car costs between HK$600,000 (US$77,400) and HK$850,000. It takes a little over three seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h. An advanced prototype of “the first the all-electric American supercar” was tested during a Founders Drive event. “Event organizer, investor and technology veteran Joshua Schachter invited Renovo to demonstrate the Coupe prototype, which took the track alongside an impressive number of exotic vehicles from around the world. The event focused on bringing together people who share passion for both cars and innovation, offered a rare glimpse into the Coupe’s development program and a chance to interact with the Renovo team during live track sessions. Renovo’s participation in the event was not announced before Sunday morning.” Mr. Schachter commented: “Our event is about connecting entrepreneurs through a love of cars, and we’re always looking for ways to challenge and inspire each other. We try to break down stereotypes about track driving, and an EV that can hang with gas supercars at Laguna Seca is certainly a surprise to a lot of people. I’m really glad the Renovo team was able to participate this weekend, and I know the paddock thoroughly enjoyed it too.” For Renovo, it was good oportunity not only to test the car (no times were released), but also to seek investors, we believe. There is no indication when we can expect the production version and first deliveries, but Christopher Heiser, CEO of Renovo Motors, seems positive about the developments: “The Coupe, Renovo’s debut offering, embodies the company’s commitment to maximum performance on the street and track. Sunday’s test focused on benchmarking energy consumption and profiling baseline performance at the iconic 2.238-mile track, which offers unique topography including the high vertical loading of Turn 8, nicknamed “The Corkscrew.” On display was Renovo’s state-of-the-art vehicle technology including a powertrain delivering more than 1,000 foot-pounds of torque. With a 0-60 MPH time of less than 3.4 seconds, the Coupe is the quickest production rear-wheel drive electric vehicle in the world.” Christopher Heiser, CEO of Renovo Motors said: “An incredible thank you goes out to Joshua and his team for inviting us to test the Coupe at this special event. Since its introduction last year at Pebble Beach, the Coupe has set new standards in vehicle performance and engineering. Our team has spent countless hours refining its capabilities, and the test this past weekend is a great way for us to share our work. This shakedown run for us focused on validating some new systems and gathering detailed telemetry from the nearly 1,000 sensors on the car. Even running at 70% pace, the Coupe was very settled, very fast and continues to exceed our expectations.” [© insideevs.com] http://www.hotproductnews.com/press-releases/renovo-motors-makes-surprise-visit-to-mazda-raceway-laguna-seca-with-its-all-electric-supercar RENOVO MOTORS MAKES SURPRISE VISIT TO MAZDA RACEWAY LAGUNA SECA WITH ITS ALL-ELECTRIC SUPERCAR [image http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad265/gabby_batto1/GBMA1993%202_zps9l7ar6h4.jpg ] SILICON VALLEY, CALIF. [EVDL] EVLN: Old Top Gear Misled The World On An American Performance EV
https://www.carthrottle.com/post/4-ways-top-gear-misled-the-world-on-american-performance-cars/ 4 Ways Top Gear Misled The World On American Performance Cars [20151012] Christopher Smith [image https://d37nk263jfz2p8.cloudfront.net/image/1/700/0/uploads/articles/tesla_roadster_japanese_displa-56182cad86766.jpg (Tesla Roadster EV) ] The boys are brilliant in their passion for cars, but they don’t always tell the whole story. Here are a few points on American cars that need to be set right! It wasn’t until the eighth or ninth series that I started watching what’s now known as New Old Top Gear. Back in those days, getting full episodes in America wasn’t necessarily easy, but as a devoted petrolhead I’ll just say I found a way. At that point I’d already had a few cheap car experiences of my own, so watching a show with three blokes cocking about with cars in a similar manner as me (albeit with a MUCH larger budget) was sheer pleasure. As a budding auto journalist with a strong automotive background, I also learned that the boys tended to stretch the truth from time to time. Hey, that’s okay; it’s a television show designed to entertain. But there were also moments - primarily during road tests - where that hyperbole was stretched to the limit in a way that might not be so obvious to casual viewers. Admittedly I have some bias to U.S. manufacturers, just as Clarkson, May and Hammond have bias to British brands. It’s that bias which compels me to help clear the air on a few moments in New Old Top Gear where the trio weren’t entirely forthcoming in regards to some American car reviews. Informed car enthusiasts like you will likely recognise what I’m saying, but for the non-car lovers, here’s a bit more insight into a few moments that, while entertaining for the presenters, created all kinds of frustration for American auto enthusiasts ... 2. The Tesla Roadster 'will run out of power after 55 miles' Here’s an instance where stretching the truth for entertainment purposes actually led to a formal lawsuit. Most people recall Clarkson’s review of the Tesla Roadster, notably that both test cars broke down and that they would run out of power after 55 miles, as opposed to Tesla’s claimed range of over 200 miles. Ultimately the lawsuit was dismissed in Top Gear’s favour because their conclusions were technically correct; under continual racing conditions the Tesla would run out of power much more quickly. Obviously. However, since nobody would be running a Tesla under continual racing conditions, why make such a big deal out of the shortened range? If you run a 2013 Porsche 911 turbo under continual racing conditions, it certainly won’t achieve anywhere near its combined rating of 19 US mpg. And yet, in the many Porsche reviews through the years, that subject never came up. Obviously the takeaway is that Top Gear doesn’t like electric cars, and hey, there’s nothing wrong with that. Personally, I’m not a fan, either; they’re too heavy, too quiet, they take far too long to recharge, and the reliable range varies far too much on how you drive. The technology is improving, but it just doesn’t make sense yet as a performance car. Had Clarkson simply said these things, then no harm no foul. Instead, the crew resorted to some very questionable editing, and if you believe Tesla, flat-out lies to paint a very bad picture of a car that is really quite brilliant. Is it perfect? Certainly not, but neither is it the disaster that Top Gear tried to make it out to be. Even for an entertaining motoring show, they crossed the line in their attempt to be witty ... [EVDL] EVLN: 4WD PV-Electric stroller concept means pushing not needed
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/culture/technology/electric-stroller-concept-means-no-more-pushing/article26717673/?cmpid=rss1 Electric stroller concept means no more pushing Charles Bombardier Oct. 11, 2015 [images http://static.theglobeandmail.ca/4a2/globe-drive/culture/technology/article26717669.ece/ALTERNATES/w620/2.JPG / Mujin (Charles Bombardier) Images by Xavier Gordillo, provided by Charles Bombardier http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/culture/technology/article26717665.ece/BINARY/w940/image.jpg http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/culture/technology/article26717671.ece/BINARY/w940/image.jpg ] Our Prototypes column introduces new vehicle concepts and presents visuals from designers who illustrate the ideas. Some of them will be extensions of existing concepts, others will be new, some will be production ready, and others really far-fetched. The concept The MUJIN is a futuristic electric stroller concept which requires no driver. MUJIN would be similar to the current strollers parents use in North America, but adapted to follow them when they travel by foot in the neighbourhood. Each MUJIN would be paired with its baby and parent, and it would only follow orders given by the parents to assist them all day in taking a little extra care of their baby. The background Today’s strollers haven’t evolved much. Parents everywhere know the hassle of either bending over a stroller or accidentally kicking the wheels while they walk or jog. You have to hold onto it all the time, so if you want to walk the dog or help another child while you’re walking with the stroller, it can get tricky. Why not use new technologies to improve strollers and ease the daily lives of millions of parents? Using a machine with babies is always a challenge for engineers, but I am sure a safe electric stroller could be developed. I asked Xavier Gordillo to conceptualise this idea by taking inspiration from the robotic wheelchair invented by Dean Kamen, which can also climb stairs. How it works Ion lithium batteries would power the Mujïn, delivering power to its four wheels. It would have four-wheel-drive for extra traction and safety, and a foldable roof/shade screen made of flexible solar panels could help charge the batteries. The Mujïn could also save up to 25 per cent of its energy by using regenerative braking. This autonomous stroller would feature a driverless system that would ride at low speeds and stay just behind or just ahead of the parent, based on their preferences. It would work similarly to the Volkswagen stroller prototype. The Mujïn would be equipped with cameras, warning systems, and a lot of back-up safety measures. It could also be driven by an adult in manual mode. The stair climbing system would need to be developed further. We thought about using a system similar to the Ibot wheelchair and having the wheels rotate going upstairs or downstairs. The trick is to maintain balance at all times. Parents will probably want to keep their hands on the Mujïn while it’s climbing or descending stairs but the Mujïn could accomplish this on it’s own too. It would also be possible to use the Mujïn like a conventional stroller. What it’s used for The Mujïn would obviously serve to carry your baby around anytime during the day. The vehicle could feature music, a wireless or Bluetooth camera system, a vibration mode to soothe the baby, and even a way to gently heat the crib or cool it down. Finally, the Mujïn could also be used to transport other items like groceries or shopping bags. The designer I would like to thank Xavier Gordillo who created the images of the MUJIN concept. Gordillo lives near Blansko, Czech Republic. He studied Car Design at the Europe Design Institute (IED), and he works as a Freelance Industrial Designer. He also created the images of the Pixi transparent bus and the Gemini twin deck bus.
