Winternals NT Locksmith will change the admin password on an NT workstation.
I believe they have an updated version that also works on 2k.

Does anyone have some sort of hack tool that will allow you to change the
local admin password on a workstation and get into the OS? We took a machine
off the domain but didn't realize that the local admin password was not set
to the company default password.

Also is there is way to just load the windows 2k cd in and restart the pc
and have it so that it only does a reinstall and does not format the drive?

Thanks,

The thing that annoys me is there is no Microsoft-provided way to reset
the dang thing, even if you have physical access to the system. Let's face
it, if you have physical access, your security is toast, regardless, so all
this does is make our lives difficult. The ironic part is, one solution to
this problem I frequently see posted is to boot Linux from floppy and use a
special tool to edit the SAM.

Ummm... I'd be very willing to disagree with you. As a security guy, you
would be surprised at how long it doesn't take me to know every password on
an NT network and I'm not using 100's of computers to crack them either. My
laptop suffices for the task, even my little PII 300 w/ 64MB of RAM on BSD
suffices and rather quickly at that...

I am assuming your being sarcastic? There are many easy ways to get
passwords from a machine. I may be wrong on this but you can get a NTFS
boot disk grab the SAM put it on a floppy then load it to another machine
and use many cracking tools that are available. I have done it a few times
for clients when admins have quit and they have no record of passwords.

and I have never heard someone put 'amazing, secure, and NT or 2000' in the
same sentence in my life.

There are utilities out there that will allow you to
easily crack Win2k passwords, and regarding Syskey, it
can be disabled, and the password retrieved, though
you run the risk of nuking the box.

Win2k password are not easy to crack though, first of all you do not have
access to the SAM database when the OS is running, so forget bruteforcing.
Second, if Syskey is activated, you can forget about cracking the password,
period. Even that Linux bootdisk can't change the password then.

RE: Off topic Win 2k issue.

2001-12-18 Thread Bob t. Berge

Well, if you can deactivate Syskey, you already got sufficient rights to change admin
password in the User manager ;)
Could you point me to any of these utilities that can actually crack a win2k's SAM
database?
I am pretty sure about this not being so easy at all, I suppose that if there even is
such a tool, it will be from some big company asking mucho $$$ for it's use.

But, if I'm wrong and you're right, could you prove it to me? (I'm pretty convinced I
know a lot about this so it would be good if someone can smack my face in the dirt and
prove me wrong ;))

Thanks

I have been following this thread with interest, do you have a
recommendation for a whitepaper Microsoft or not for securing laptops with
EFS, Syskey Mode and security policies applied to the local machine.

For those of you who love NT and yet don't understand physical access allows
you to own MOST systems with the right tools, including our beloved Windows

RE: Off topic Win 2k issue.

2001-12-18 Thread Preston Jeffares

*yawns*

You guys are making this too difficult.

www.lostpassword.com

w2ntkey will reset any local Admin password to whatever you want... it
takes about 10 minutes... and a winnt or 2k machine with a floppy drive.

Other methods include... using a bootable floppy with a DOS NTFS
reader... then copying the SAM file. Distribute lophtcrack 3 across all
your servers (a quad xeon with 3 gigs of ram does nicely) and hack it
that way.

Replace rename cmd.exe to logon.scr and reboot the computer. Wait 15-20
minutes at the logon screen (don't touch the mouse or keyboard). A
command prompt will pop up. Run any command line commands or type
explorer.exe for gui navigation. If I'm correct this gives you SYSTEM
level perms.

RE: Off topic Win 2k issue.

2001-12-18 Thread Preston Jeffares

Just as an addendum to my other post... I know Ellery was trolling...
and a very nice troll it was. I just wanted to respond to all the
people baffled at how to easily hack the local admin pw.

It is amazing how secure these NT,2000,XP machines are. That admin
password
is very tough. If you lose it you might as well just toss the machine in
the
river. No one can break those passwords without getting 100's of
computers
running weeks at full steam.

It's more fun to use NTFSDOS Pro, rename user manager to the default logon
screensaver, boot the machine and wait a few minutes for user manager to
popup..
