OT: questions re: New Orleans kitties

This was posted on the VETMED list; most of the people on it are dog
owners, so I thought I would pass this along in case somebody here can
help with answers.

Subject: New Orleans kitties

Our rescue group, Buffalo Companion Animal Network, just brought back
13 cats=20
from New Orleans rescue sites. They will be in isolation for 7 days,
but we=20
have two questions right now until we can talk to our vet tomorrow:

1. the vet who checked them during transport found most have URI --
the
kittens are on =BD cc of Clavimox and the adults 1 cc Clavimox. Can I
switch =
the=20
adults to Doxycycline which we have on hand so we can keep the
Clavimox for the =

kittens?

They are all eating and drinking well except for one adult that is
pretty=20
lethargic.

2. Should we go ahead and worm them, wait until they are checked by a
vet? It =

is a pretty safe bet that they all have worms given where they are
coming from. =

4 of the kittens and one of the adults have loose stools and the
transport vet=20
thought it might be Coccidia. Is there anything we can do in the
meantime=20
before we get them to the vet?

Thanks much!

The viroptic is an anti-viral of some sort.  If you don't get it the cats' eyes can actually rupture.  It's been so long ago since I dealt with it my info. might be out of date.  I had two cats with it.  One was felv positive and the other was negative.  At that time I had to go to an opthomologist.  But I think now most regular vets have it..  It was very expensive.  I do remember that.  And I had to begin by putting drops in like 8 times a day or something.  There were other drops I had to use as well.

I don't know why there hasn't been a class action against Hartz.

If it's herpes they have to have viroptic.  I think I remember someone putting interferon drops in the nose, but not the eyes?  Either way, I don't think it will help without the viroptic

    **PLEASE CROSSPOST FAR AND WIDELY*

Seeking Katrina Cat
A nationwide search is underway to locate a female cat named “Patches” that has been missing from the vicinity of the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans since Sept. 3 or 4 when her owner had to give her to the National Guard as he was not allowed to evacuate with her on the bus. Where Patches went to from that point is a mystery. Patches has very distinctive looks. First and foremost, she is missing her LEFT EYE (surgically removed). Her remaining right eye is blue. She resembles a Siamese/Calico mix and is described as having a light tan and white body, with some darker tan areas. Her tail is dark brown/black with some light areas. Her right ear is dark, and there is a dark mark on the lower right side of her face. There is a dark stripe on the left side of her nose. Patches is approximately 8 months old and has been spayed. Her owner is very anxious to find her. Pictures of Patches and her owner can be seen at this website: http://members.boardhost.com/JosephPatches/index.html?1128199730 Anyone who has any good information about Patches is encouraged to post it to the website (don’t have to register to post).
Please feel free to print out and copy the photos and information and keep them on view throughout your rescue organization – please also make sure your local animal shelters have one or two of them so they too can be on the lookout. Last but far from least, please distribute this email information through any and all online rescue and discussion groups you participate in, and feel free to cross post.-END

has him now is going to euthanize him if a new home cannot be found - he
tested week positive and asymptomatic - his name is "Marble" - he is the
cuttiest kitty I have ever seen - he has a sort of grey marble marking
in his white body - very very affectionate! And playful and very good
with other kitties!!! I don't want him to die I begged this
lady not to PTS yet, but she might not wait for it for a long time -
Please please someone give him a sweet home! He lives in Albuquerque,

For Lohna RE: Kittypoo

2005-10-03 Thread MacKenzie, Kerry N.
Title: Message

>>>I'm sure her immune system needs to
be helped.<<<
Hello again Lohna,
Re your comment above,
one of our experienced members, Michelle, highly recommended Immuno
regulin (IR) to me, when my Flavia began to succumb to nonregenerative
anemia.  Following is some info on
IRit's a number of emails rolled into one that
I haven't yet had time to organise into one coherent report. But if you can get past that, I
think you'll find it contains some very useful info and contact
details.
Good luck. Keep us posted
on Kittypoo when you get time. Kerry

IR
INFO:
Revival's tel no is 800 786 4751. (Revival is the supplier I used.)
While I sadly did not order the Immuno regulin in time to be able to use it,
the Revival people were good to deal with and the IR arrived at both vet clinics
that I had it sent directly to when it was supposed to (ie overnighted by
Fedex). I had never ordered it before and neither vet had ever used it but they
were both very positive about doing so and liaised with me about the
protocol/how much to use---it comes with directions in any case (although I
haven't seen those because it's at the clinics).
At least I now have it on hand should Mickey (or the NJ FeLV kitty I will be
getting soon) need it.
Here's also a copy of the relevant excerpts of what I emailed to Dr Dodin who
was going to be administering the IR
Dear Dr Dodin
Here are the 3 articles that give background on Immunoregulin for FeLV cats.

(It is given by IV.) I placed an order with Revival Animal Health this
morning for 5ml of ImmunoregulinEqstim, and it will be shipped today,
overnighted to Abell, marked for your attention, so should be there tomorrow
(Wednesday). It will come in a "Polar" box, and will need refrigeration when it
arrives.
(They said a cat of 8lb is administered between 0.25 and 0.5 ml each time.)

There appear to be 2 possible protocols--4 times in first 2 weeks, then once
a week till stabilized, then monthly recommended thereafter for maintenance; OR
once a week. Please let me know what you think is best for Flavia once you've
had a chance to consider.

hey, kerry, still looking for a kitten? hee hee.

he's in michigan, at an ER clinic; has tested positive on the snap,
and they've sent out bloods for an IFA. she'll get me photos
tonight

i gave her the link to post on the adoption page, but wanted folks to
see it here, too also, the info for kittens from heaven in IA.

they had given him an arbitrary final date of this wednesday, but she
thinks that as long as they know folks are working on finding him a
place, they won't stick to that (she works at the clinic)

if someone IS interested, and there's a hold-up re: transport, i could
put him in a condo cage here, but i'd hate to do that to a baby.

Now, Lysine is a regular part of the regiment, especially w/ the cats that

Good Luck w/ your babies.

they get lysine in the food too. Terri if you remember jamies or Pam's

Dr. Glickstein, out of Philly, comes to Lancaster area and does pro bono
for our shelter.
He is a vet. opth.
For our Felv+ and FIV+ guys who had a HORRIBLE time w/ the Herpes virus in
the eyes, he Rx'd Zithromax and used that in conjunction w/ the
intranasal/intraocular FVRCP.
I am trying to remember the exact protocol, it's been awhile.
I remember, initially administering intraocular drops, then cats went on
"Z" SID for 28 days, then re-administered intraocular.
I had the treatment charts on my PC, unfortunately, that got a "virus" and
I still have not recovered my files...
I just remembered it worked, and we used ONLY triple AB opth. drops W/OUT
steroids BID.
Sorry I can't be more help.

Hi Karen,

I don't remember if there was a list member who did that with the
interferon.  Is there a feline eye specialist near you?  Maybe they
could help you with the mixture.  I honestly don't know.

There are still some list members who use Island Pharmacy.
I used to get it from the vet near me, but now that Salome' is gone, I don't
need it anymore.

Good luck!

Subject: Need home for FeLV kitten

hey, kerry, still looking for a kitten? hee hee.

he's in michigan, at an ER clinic; has tested positive on the snap,
and they've sent out bloods for an IFA. she'll get me photos
tonight

i gave her the link to post on the adoption page, but wanted folks to
see it here, too also, the info for kittens from heaven in IA.

they had given him an arbitrary final date of this wednesday, but she
thinks that as long as they know folks are working on finding him a
place, they won't stick to that (she works at the clinic)

if someone IS interested, and there's a hold-up re: transport, i could
put him in a condo cage here, but i'd hate to do that to a baby.

Dear Lohna

Re my email of last night, I'll send
you some nutrition info separately. I'm also going to send you a copy of
another email I've been sending out about a medication called Immuno Regulin.

But I wanted to add, from what you
say it sounds like Kittypoo needs to see a vet. I don't want to alarm you
unnecessarily, but as in Kittypoo's case, the only time my feral FeLVs let
me touch them was when they became very sick.  (Once, one of them
even went into the carrier of her own accord. I didn't have to catch her.)

Do you have a vet you trust?

Kerry

  Hi Lohna,

I haven't personally dealt with seizures, but there are
  many people on

this list who have and will be able to give you some
  advice.  The list

is usually slow on weekends, so if no one gets back to you
  today they

  certainly will tomorrow.
