Re: ear infection/ear surgery
I was listening to a snippet on the news a short while ago where they were talking about cancer cells that were just at the edge of where the imunine system recognizes them as being foreign and attacks them and kills them... The news was talking about genetic engineering to get the immune system to extend that little bit more so it will detect cancer and fight it... FeLV is probably the reverse of extending ... Thus the very high rate of cancer deaths Tad [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Phaewryn, That's really interesting (and scary) [re: last paragraph]. RE: ear infection/ear surgery
This makes sense -- in humans anyway, leukemia is cancer of the blood, so it's not far-fetched that one sort of cancer (especially one that has free range of the entire body) might promote another in a different organ. But this is kind of a circular thing: The vaccine has decreased the incidence of lymphoma in cats, yet the virus itself used in the vaccine CAUSES cancer. Furthermore, generally cats that test FeLV+ do not get vaccinated, and they have a high incidence of lymphoma. Makes me wonder if maybe veterinary science should be looking into a vaccine made for FeLV+ cats that will guard specifically against lymphoma while not killing them in the process. I'm sort of assuming not a lot of energy has been expended on this as yet, seeing as how so many vets still immediately assume that pts is the first line of action for an FeLV+ diagnosis. Maybe now that SOME people realize that it's the opportunistic diseases, like lymphoma, that carry these babies off rather than the FeLV itself, there will be some work toward lengthening their lives. Re: was ear infection/ear surgery-- lymphoma
I DEFINITELY think that what this says is that FeLV is a biologic carcinogen responsible for the development of feline lymphoma and that the shifts have come from vaccines cutting down on the incidence of FeLV. ear infection/ear surgery
Hi, if anyone knows about surgery on ears for cats (due to ear infection), please contact me - Also, is there any support group/list for ear problem among cats that you know of?
