Jean, with a VERY BIG GRIN, I would add that it is absolutely incurable in

However, I suffered from: Reluctance to perform housework long before I
had horses.

Happy Easter to all,

HAPPY EASTER! TO THE FJORD LIST.

Sue in NM where we have 8 inches of snow and more falling.

GOOD HEAVENS!

8 inches snow down there? We have been having early break-up...55 degrees
and 14 hours sun every day for the last week and much of the snow is gone!
Corrals are a mess but if this keeps up there will be dirt (dry) showing
soon! There is actualy some mud now. Fjords are a real mess, but hopefully
I will rake off the muck with their loose fur! water is running everywhere,
and it will be another wonderful warm sunny day today.

HAPPY EASTER EVERYBODY!

White hooves

2004-04-11 Thread Vicki and Tony Johnston

This message is from: Vicki and Tony Johnston [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The best farrier that I've ever had (in Montana) told me that the black
hooves were tougher. He used to tell his apprentices that my Bashkir
Curly had the closest to perfect hooves that they would ever see.

Now, in sandy Florida, that Curly has brittle hooves. I have an Arab
with white hooves that has splits that I can't cure. I have another
Arab that has some white in her hooves and they have always stayed in
great condition. And of course, my Fjord has no problems.

So, all I can conclude is that I'd rather be in Montana!!

Madison Horse Fair

2004-04-11 Thread Dave and Patti Walter
This message is from: Dave and Patti Walter [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks Pat, for reminding everyone about the Midwest Horse Fair coming up this
next weekend in Madison WI. I'll go a little further and inform everyone
who's all in it and what's going on. We have :
Nancy Hotovy driving single
Mike Sadlon doing single log skid
Pat Holland, Joni Griffin, Keelie Finnel, Carlene Schwartz, one of the Megan's
and myself all riding.

I say one of the Megan's as we have two Megan's riding Arianna, the raffle
horse. One will ride on Sat and one will ride on Sun. Keelie Finnel will be
doing some tricks on her gelding, Jake along with Megan doing a bow with
Arianna. The kids are super fun with their Fjords.

We will all be in silver vests this year, silver tassels on the horses, except
for lucky me I get to be dressed like the Lone Ranger. The Midwest Horse Fair
is celebrating their 25th anniversary along with celebrating famous Horses of
Movies/films. Hence, the Silver decor and the Lone Ranger idea. So, Silas is
Silver and we will be opening the demo with a jump over a banner that Joni
made, that is black and Silver and has 25 Years across the middle. So, no
rearing just jumping for this Lone Ranger and Silver. Hi Ho Silas!! The jump
on Sat morning will be 3ft, not sure about Sunday, as I am not sure if we can
warm up ahead of time. They have a very nice facility, except when it comes
to warming up. Only the outdoor and wellin bad weather there is no warm
up. So if that is the case, we'll just do 2ft on Sunday. I know we can warm
up on Sat, as we ride so early.

Our ride times are not the best, but we sure hope you'll come and watch and
cheer us on.
Sat. 8:40
Sun 9:50

Arianna the raffle horse will also be in a seperate demo, Sat. 8:30 and Sunday
10:00.

We are in Barn 5. It's a LONG 4 days for all of us, we sure enjoy seeing
everyone, so if you can make it, please come and watch us perform.

PS on a side note, I'm so silly I agreed to go the weekend after horse fair to
KY, going to the Rolex!!! Hope I survive April!!!

Re: White Hooves

2004-04-11 Thread Emma Bicknell

This message is from: Emma Bicknell [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I was always told as a child that white hooves were weaker and harder to
care for and have accepted that, but it could well have been erroneous.
I used to have a chestnut mare with white feet and stockings, but as I
think about it now I can't remember there being any particular problem
with her feet over any other horse's. Then again, she was an Arab which
might complicate things! My older Fjord mare's feet are a bit dry and
fragile at the moment and we are treating them regularly...I suppose its
a combination of factors.

I would beg to differ with you on this. We just
finished a farrier course and every time we got out a
new set of hooves we all went for the white ones.
They were softer and much easier to work with. My two

cents worth.

The relative softness probably had more to do with the animal's breed,
health, and living conditions than color. Stalled horses have weaker feet, as do
shod horses. Breeds like Arabs and Fjords are known for their granite-like feet,
especially when kept barefoot. Too many factors.
