Pennsylvania Equine Expo
This message is from: "mom" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Just got back from a truly wonderful four days at the Harrisburg Pennsylvania Equine Expo. Curt Pierce, Marsha Korose, and Joe Glick did the breed proud with their educational and attractive booth (lots of great pictures of fjords doing everything that fjords do, attractively displayed)--hours and hours of answering questions and passing out brochures. Ulend had his usual adoring crowd inside the stall with either Curt or Marsha or me as they stroked and petted and ruffled his mane and hugged him. He is such a mush--just loves to be loved--and puts up with everything. Surely demonstrates the good nature of the fjord horse. Most people were so surprised to find that he is a stallion! He wakes up nicely for the breed and stallion demos :~). Curt rode him in the stallion demo and Marsha drove him with the white dun gelding Solvar to the Tidaholm marathon cart for the breed demo. Joe Glick brought his new stallion Sivert -- Sivert just got a lot of "Wow, is he gorgeous!" from the crowd. He was a perfect gentleman in the booth stall and showed off his beautiful head and really impressive stripes to good advantage. People found it hard to believe that he was 19. Joe has had him under saddle for about four weeks and both he and Curt rode their stallions in the stallion exhibition. Joe has done a remarkable job bringing this horse along--he is a quick study and seems to love learning. He's started him with long lines and next year will probably both ride and drive him at Harrisburg. He and Ulend were excellent examples of the lighter, sportier build and the heavier draft build. Joe drove his gelding Halnas to the stone boat, his 15 year old son Ivan brought Sivert down through the crowd to the arena so that Curt could show him in hand while Marsha drove the pair for the breed demo (I get to navigate--it is sooo much fun!). Curt walked Sivert around next to the railing and Sivert spent a lot of time getting stroked and petted by pretty girls. :~) A nice variety of colors, body styles and talents. And a lot of expense, time, effort, and energy. These guys who make the effort to showcase our Fjords at an expo deserve a lot of credit and appreciation. We had lots of enquiries about horses available for purchase! If we had flyers from those with horses available, I am sure you could make some good connections/sales. It's really a missed opportunity not to have that sort of information for the public. Seeing these guys in the flesh and watching them perform makes a huge impression. And the contrast with other breeds can be pretty dramatic at an expo. I loved the comment someone made that we should emphasize that fjords are not just for kids. Most of the people I talked with over the three days were adults who wanted something sensible, solid, versatile, and strong. The kids were a bonus. Anyway, I didn't mean to be quite so long winded, but I am still a little high from a great weekend of horse company and horse talk. See you all at the 25th! Sue Freivald

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I want to second Catherine's note about how much fun we had at this years Expo. It was a BLAST!! One of the really fun parts for me was getting to really trot all out in the big arena with our pair and carriage. And of course I wish we had had someone with a video camera for Catherine's Ski routine - it was really the high point of the show from all the comments we heard afterwards. Pam Adler and Dad & I were also asked to drive some of the clinicians in in our carriages for the big Spectacular. So our Fjords got a little extra exposure. ( And I got to drive Clinton Anderson in again (He's such a cutie)! Two years in a row folks are going to think he really likes Fjords!! LOL I would also like to say thanks again to our great Oregon Fjord Club gang. You are all the greatest!!! Amy Amy Evers Dun Lookin' Fjords Redmond, OR Fjord [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This message is from: "Lassesen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Rune and I are back from the Greater NW Equine Expo. WOW! What a time we had! A big THANK YOU to Amy, Bud and Tillie Evers, Becky & Matt Hope, Linda Bezdek & Cassie Soule, Laurie & Brianne Orrick, Maggie McLaughlin, Wanda Hill and Pam Abbott. We were told by many spectators that we had the BEST demonstration! We had 10 Fjords at the Expo and we demonstrated, Packing, Single Cart, Pair Cart, Western, Dressage, Mama and baby and "Fjording Around" by skiing behind a fjord. The Expo Staff asked us to perform the skiing at the Friday Night Spectacular Show. We had a blast! We gave away OVER 1300 Fjord Hugs during the event. Attendance was the lowest in 4 years... but the weather was the nastiest (rain and heavy winds) and with the world events... we did not expect the crowds to be as heavy as in the past. Overall, the Fjords were well received and we had a lot of fun giving away HUGS to the spectators. Thanks! For a wonderful weekend. PA Equine Expo - 28 Feb - 2 Mar
This message is from: M Korose <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi List This is another notice about the PA Equine Expo that will be held in Harrisburg PA at the end of the month. http://www.horseworldexpo.com/index_PA.htm We are going to promote the Fjord horse, taking our stallion for the Stallion Row and should be doing a short demo (probably Sat and Sun). We will have a small booth next to the stallion stall. If you are interested in marketing your Fjords to folks from all over the Eastern Seaboard, please send us a flyer via email or snail mail. We will let you know the price for 200 copies at the Staples store and ask $10.00 for distribution. This is a great opportunity to get your sales list out to a lot of folks. We have a couple looky-loo customers right now and we always tell folks that there may be a trip involved to find your special Fjord. Curt also tells customers, he will assist them in getting their Fjords back to this part of the country. So Help us make this successful by telling people there ARE wonderful Fjords out there and THEY TOO can own one. Marsha in VA email ads to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo! What was interesting to me is that both groups that I went to see made 1st and 2nd places. Dr. Ritter's booth got a 1st place. Very nice, elegant, and he is a WONDERFUL trainer. And a gentle-man with a gentle way with horse and human. And the Fjord booth, it was so well done. I loved the red white and blue and the fjord silhouettes. A lot of time, effort and planning went into it. Can't wait for next year. I'd sign Juniper up for the therapeutic horse, but again, she should be VERY pregnant same time next year. Pamela

This message is from: "Lynch/Stidham" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi list, My name is Caitlin. I am generally a lurker and have posted only a few times. I am the one that got a Fjord gelding named Jordan as an engagement "ring". We took delivery of him on the 3rd of Feb. and I am very happy he is my friend. The reason I venture out into the Kitchen is to ask a somewhat silly question. I really want to go to the Horse Expo the is in Albany Or. We live in Bellevue Wa and this is an opportunity to meet some of the people I see here. Can the person that is heading up this project please let me know when this is so I can take the time off. I could also use directions but I'll find my way if needed. I need to get pictures of Jordan and Caleb(3yr old Morgan gelding) and show off my kids. I would also like to send our heart felt wishes to Janne in regards to your loss. It is so sad to hear but should never be hidden. To share is to heal. Blessings to Heidi. Short memories are good for something right? Caitlin in soggy Bellevue WA Jordan and Caleb, 3 Cats, 2 guinea pigs, 2 parakeets and Joe my fiance.

Equine Expo
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Everyone, Just wanted to briefly fill you in on the upcoming Expo in Albany, OR and remind you to mark your calendars for March 24-26. This started out as just a little project of mine, but has since snowballed (most of my 'projects' seem to have a way of doing that to me)! I will be joined by Catherine Lassesen who has volunteered to bring a mare and foal and to drive during our Breed Demo. We will also be joined by Peg Knutsen with Erlend to ride English and have a grey present for the public to see. Would like to invite everyone who can, to attend and show support for Fjord horses (translated hoop 'n' holler! HA!). Tackling a project like this in an effort to expand public awareness of the Fjord, is labor intensive, and expensive -- ask any of the folks who DO Equitana! I am really excited to have a public forum of this magnitude available at our doorstep! An event such as this benefits ALL Fjord owners so please remember to thank those folks who are willing to do the work on behalf of everyone. Once again, I encourage you to come, lets show strength in numbers -- hoop 'n' holler a bit and maybe even offer to lend a hand! Sarah, I received the banner, etc. Thanx! Will return when this is all over. Gayle Ware Field of Dreams Eugene, OR

Attended VA Winter Equine Expo
This message is from: Sam & Sue Banks <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello everyone, As I mentioned last week, my driving club was invited to do the Carriage Driving demos at the Expo, so Lilly (BDF Lillehammer) and I hit the road. I did the Ride and Drive part of the demo with another club member with a very nice Appy. The organizers asked if our horses would stand well, if we could ride in first and harness up in the ring to show the spectators that carriage driving is not as quick as putting a saddle on a horse. It was a good idea and gave the spectators some appreciation for the amount of work that goes into training a safe driving horse, as well as the work our 9 turnouts did each day for the demonstration. Lilly always surpasses my wildest expectations. Between being a Fjord, and having had natural horsemanship type training (despite it being both Lilly and me learning about NH at the same time), Lilly handled a large amount of 'new' stuff being thrown at her at once. Lilly is regularly ridden but had not been driven much since she was a 2 year old, and that was mostly groundwork/walking since my lightweight cart is not very safe or sturdy. After I was asked to attend the Expo, I hitched Lilly up 6 times in the last 2-3 weeks, weather permitting. I was much more nervous than Lilly. Having the riding part first was perfect for me, since we were not allowed to school inside the coliseum and I am more confident riding. Lilly trotted in the ring, down the centerline and saluted with her riding buddy alongside, and then we did a small pattern riding. Then into the center of the ring to harness up as our announcer explained the harness parts, the training required, proper use of a whip as an aid, not punishment, etc.. Then off we would go again driving around the arena. The first day Lilly was quiet, relaxed, but not going forward well, then the second day she was as great as her training allowed. She might have been tired the first day since we had to practice our routine in warmup more, before the exhibition, to get it right. To my relief, Lilly and I did not embarrass the Fjord breed as its solo representative at the Expo. A lot of visitors walked through the barns and stopped to chat briefly. The attendance was light in general as this was the first year of the VA Winter Equine Expo. While the coliseum riding area is large, it does not have room for a lot of vendors such as is seen at Equitana, but has several classrooms. The biggest draw was for Pat Parelli, and it was fun to see him in person. The people in my driving club are the nicest horse people around, and I have always stayed a member of the club even when I was not driving a horse. I have learned a lot from many of them and enjoy their company, so I had a great weekend. Sue Banks, Virginia, USA [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Virginia's Winter Equine Expo
This message is from: Sam & Sue Banks <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> This weekend will be the first Winter Equine Expo in Lexington, Virginia at The Horse Center. Members of my carriage driving club have been asked to attend for the carriage driving demonstrations, and I hope to attend with almost 5 year old BDF Lillehammer. She is what I consider green-broke to drive - I started her as a 2 year old but once I started riding her at 3 she was so comfortable I never switched to driving her again. I volunteered to do the Ride and Drive part of the Demo, needless to say. Schedule - Friday - 5:30-7:30 Chili Cookoff and country western dance; 7:30-8:30 Musical Liberty Freestyle; 9:00 Barrel Racing Exhibition. Saturday Main arena 8:30 Kenny Harlow, Training with Trust; 9:30 Carriage Demo; 10:30 GaWaNi Pony Boy; 11:30 Pat Parelli; 1:30 Dog parade and Terrier Races; 2:30 GaWaNi Pony Boy; 3:30 On Target Training (Clicker Training method) Shawna & Vinton Karrasch; 4:30 David Seay, Progressive Horsemanship; 7:30 Draft Horse Pulls. Seminars in classrooms all day. Sunday Main Arena 8:30 David Seay; 9:30 GaWaNi Pony Boy; 10:30 Carriage Driving; 11:30 Kenny Harlow; 12:30 Shawna & Vinton Karrasch; 1:30 Pony Boy; 2:30 Pat Parelli; 4:30 Dog Parade and Terrier Races. More seminars. I attended the Horse Expo in Maryland last weekend with many of these clinicians. The weather was bad (ice and snow) and no one could ride, there was a big turnout. I walked through the Avenue of Breeds but no Fjords were there. The Carriage Driving organizer of this Virginia event said even if Lilly was not comfortable driving with a large group of horses yet, at least she would be there to represent our breed (in all our fuzzy easy keeper glory). I am hoping we can arrange the demo so that Lilly drives with some quieter horses from our club and gain confidence, and that I will be riding her when the flashier horses come in. Lilly has been ridden at Equitana, and was fine there, we just don't have enough "time and miles" under our belt in driving. Hope the weather stays decent. Sue Banks, Virginia USA
