Good Morning Karen
from the Riddles in Spokane where it is 20 degrees this morning,

No, you didn't sound all that frozen but we could tell by your clothing and
those of the competitors that it must have been quite cold.

It was a very enjoyable bit of news tape and we appreciate hearing about and
seeing the variety of ways people perform with their Fjords.

We seem to be in the midst of a lot of extreme cowboy trail trial enthusiasm
for all breeds of horses. We hope to see Fjords winning or placing high in
many of these events, even on RFD TV. They certainly have the brains and
attitude to excell at this type of event.

Thanks for the comments, Warren. Btw, someone emailed me and siad, gee,
maybe this is what you looked like in winona too Uh, yeah, I did happen
to wear the same gear, thats right, b...

I just want to clarify something. Trail Trials and the Extreme Cowboy
race  are 2 different  concepts altogether. In the original Extreme
Cowboy sequences, they did have the first phase of the race be
performanced based only, then, as they narrowed the field, did they turn
on the speed. Only in (1) obstacle (the one Pat + Arnie are in, in the
video) did we have a timed portion, and that timed part was after the
performance section of 4 trail obstacles had been completed. It was
something I was experimenting with, and will modify in the future, as in
reality, not many folks could complete the tasks as sucessfully as Arnie
and Pat are showing in the tape. In this obstacle you were 1st judges on
performance (a subjective score) and secondly, and separately from the
overall score, you were judged on points you could amass in a short
period of time remaining. Some folks got it and really put in a nice
performance + racked up a decent amount of points, some folks didn't get
it at all and 'crammed and jammed' thru the whole thing. Out of 79 rides,
only about 8% scored above a 7. The average was 5.6 for this particular
obstacle. So, its back to the drawing board for me ;~) And, no, I wasn't
biased about scoring Arnie-Kebarnie (my old barn name for him) so highly.
They really were a super team together. I talked to Pat today and she is
allready checking dates for her very own TT up in Hayfork. Stay tuned...

Karen

PS: Libby would be a superb venue for this kind of TT activity! As a
matter of fact, ages ago I put together a copuple of mini 1 day CDE's
before the show started (what we now call ADT's except we were not in the
arena very much ;~) The area across the street that is all Forest service
land really was fun to drive on, and I even went over there to school my
horses from time to time to get away from the arena hub-bub.

Okay, one of our club members gave me a heads up tonite about this video
piece that appeared on our local Carson City news channel. Its pretty
cool, especially the footage of Pat Shumaker's gelding Arnie in the
gamblers choice obstacle. Pretty cool watching Pat manouver Arnie around
the round pen to the gate to open + close it - they must have done this 3
times, and he sure had it DOWN solid! You can also hear Pat yelling 'hup,
hup!' as if they were driving a hazard (and me in the background cracking
up!) There's also a nice shot of Cindy + MIk as well, but sure wish it
was a bit longer...One disclaimer however, I was interviewed for the
sound bite by my evil ex-roomate dave Morgan who operates News Carson
City  I look sound like a frozen-shmozen frakazoid, so please, those
of you who have never met me please don't think I act + look like this
everyday. It was so bloody cold I bit the inside of my mouth twice
involuntarily, or was it because I didn't get to eat lunch until 3pm??!

Anyways...enjoy!

Last year Cindy Vallecillo and Mik rode in the Trail Trials and did very
resepectably, not to mention Mik was the most popular horse amongst the
64 entries!speaking of her, if you are readihng this Cindy, drop me a

Mountain Trail Trials Eugene, OR

2005-11-14 Thread FofDFJORDS
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Everyone,

The 2005 Mountain Trail Trial Championship show was held last weekend here in
Eugene at the Oregon Horse center. Some of you may remember the article that
I wrote about this spectacular event last year. It is unlike anything you
have ever seen before!

The Oregon Horse Center is quite spectacular in itself, having about 4 acres
all under one roof! There are 3 arenas and about 150 stalls - again - all
under one roof! Makes it really nice since it rains so much here during the
winter. You never have to go outside!

The course designers outdid themselves AGAIN! Each year one thinks that it
just couldn't get any grander, but it always does!

When you see this course it is hard to believe that it is inside. They bring
in tons of huge boulders, trees, etc. They literally bring the outdoors
inside. They construct ditches, mountains to climb, ponds and streams to cross
and
this year they constructed a 25' waterfall for the horses to walk under!
Their bridge is a real bridge about 50 feet long - not just plywood to walk
over.
They dig a trench that is about 3' deep and this year they added fog in the
bottom of it. That was scary to many of the horses.

This year they added a huge mural of snow capped mountains for a back drop.
I plan to write an article for the Herald when we get photos back from the
photographer, however, there was a reporter from Western Horseman here this
year
so watch for that article to appear. Don't know exactly which issue it will
be in.

I had suggested to the facility owner that he try to put something together
for RFDTV and he said they were already working on that. Hopefully he can get
that done because this event is unlike anything else in the entire country.

I was not able to ride in it this year since we had just returned from a
wedding out of town, but two Fjords represented us there, Thomas, owned by Sue
Grantham from my barn and Hansel, owned by Pam Garza from Wilsonville, OR.
They
both did very well. We left before the final results were announced so don't
know where they placed.

This event grows bigger each year. This time there were over 200 competitors.
I saw license plates from all over the Northwest from CA to MT. As word
spreads, I'm sure it will continue to grow and grow.

Mark your calendars. This event is held the middle of Nov. each year. Even
if you are not able to ride in it, it is worth watching!! Of course, the more
Fjords the better!!

Hi Brigid,
I attended a trail hazard clinic earlier this year and we had to ride
up to an upright plastic barrel, pick up the end of a rope, and drag a sack
full of noisy pop cans down around a pole and return to barrel. If I remember
correctly, the rope was about 20 ft. long. There were 2 fjords there, they
both did great. Many other horses freaked out, some dumping the riders. Hope
that helps and have fun!!! Shawna in OR

Thanks Brigid, it was fun, and I learned alot about how to put one on...we
lease a really nice ranch nearby for cattle hayground. It is co-owned by
the BLM and Carson City. The BLM owns the land, the city owns the water
rights. The BLM wants to see more recreational use on it, so I think this
type of event would be perfect. My friends and I are scheming...we were
thinking it would be cool to have a new Years Day Trail Trials out there.

Congratulations on your success at the Trail Trials! Sounds like a lot of

real-life test, here in San Mateo CA. I don't think he does this anymore,
due to insurance/litigation concerns. Too bad.

I read about Trail Trials several years ago and sent to the California
Horse trail Trials people for info and a set of the rules, etc. They sold
me a packet and I took it to our Trail riders organization here, the
Interior Alaska Trail Rilders Association. We hold an annual NCTRA
sanctioned Competitive ride. Well, between the Trail Riders and the 4-H
groups we put on Trail Trials and got a LOT of folks out who ordinarily
don't do Competitive rides, and we had a ball! Much more relaxed than a
Competitive Trail Ride, not nearly the preparation needed, all ages can
participate, etc. Obstacles were a bit too simple, tho. I think Our ride
maybe was 10 miles, but I can't remember. We had a great barbecue
afterward and thought it one of the best events we'd had. Nice change from
the shows and not nearly so much work as the Copetitive Trail Ride.

Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, another sunny day, but too much ice left from
melting and freezing snow to ride.

(Hey, a NEW topic here...!)

Had a few private emails about what in the heck trail trials were, as I

(Hey, a NEW topic here...!)

Had a few private emails about what in the heck trail trials were, as I
posted to the list that I was going to participate in one. And so,to satisfy
your curiosity, this is what they were about...

Last Thursday, I saw a flyer for a Trail Trial up at the feed store. They
were going to be held very near me, at Washoe Lake State Park.
I love trail classes, but I do think they are really artificial tests,in a
show/arena setting, with no room to do anything in. The chance to test our
skills out in a real enviroment really appealed to me. So I called my
friend Maggie who keeps her T.W. here at our barn. They are Posse members,
and he's VERY broke, and of course she wanted to try it out as well.
The T.T. were a blast! albeit almost a little too easy from what I expected.
There were 45 entries, really a big mix of breeds and abilities. There were
10 obstacles, set overa 5 mile course. They were very simple,

1. a bridge on semi-level ground
2. going up a huge sandune
3. going down a huge (same) dune
4. walking into the lake and going around a post. (water about 1' deep)
5. walking by a motorcycle, engine running
6. walking by a clothesline and bags of garbage (laundry?!)
7. A log/brush jump (2'6)
8. Dismount/remount, (nearside for bonus points.)
9,10 - I can't remember, but you get the idea.
Everyone was sent off at 1 min. intervals, and we were told to stay in
order. So, we walked, 'cause those in front of us were walking. We almost
walked the whole way, save for when we couldn't stand it and did some
synchronised circles in the sagebrush! (I think there should be mandatory
gaits, i.e trotting loping in designated areas, as part of the overall
test. but that's just my observation.) Everything else was a gas! It was
kind of like a rally in that the flagging was sort of sparse, and the riders
strung out thru a sea of sage brush and dunes, so you had to paty attention
to finding the next flag.
The whole thing took about an hour, and we did really well. Maggie got 4th
place w/ her T.W. and Tise and I got 2nd, plus the judges voted on their
favorite horse/best go in their obstacle, and Tise won!(We won some
shampoo and a sponge and a huge sack of grain. We donated the grain to an
endurance rider-type, as my air ferns would have no use for it.)
If anyone would like more specific rules, etc. I can fwd them from the
organisers. I was thinking this would be a fun, casual thing to do on the
Thursday before Libby starts...lots of woods to set up in,etc, and would be
a nice icebreaker.

Goodnight,
Karen
