RE: FM 10 sometimes changes graphics paths

2015-01-15 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi,

Now I work with FrameMaker for more than 20 years,
but I had never encountered this issue.
I will not add IDs to the graphics files. At least in my (rare) cases
they would not have helped.
With IDs translation or updating to a new doc. release
would be much more work.
Instead I will take extra care when I move files.
Thanks for the help.

Best regards

Winfried

Hi Winfried,

yes, FrameMaker searches for missing graphics in the last successfully opened
graphics folder (of the actual session at least). So, if you have just opened a
first file, all missing graphics for the second file will be replaced with
graphics for the first file if they have the same names, without checking if
they are identical.

This can be very annoying and therefore I recommend to use unique IDs for
graphics (including version/revision) instead of or in addition to simple names.

FrameMaker on MacOS Retina display?

2015-01-15 Thread Alan Houser

Colleagues,

I'm migrating from a 13" MacBook Pro to a 13" Retina MacBook Pro. On the
new system, much of the FrameMaker user interface text (top-level menus,
dialog box text, etc.) is _tiny_.

I'm running a Windows 7 virtual machine under Parallels 10.

My screen resolution is about 2000 x 1066 (less than full resolution).
I've experimented with decreasing the resolution on the Mac and on the
Windows VM, to no real effect. (Interestingly, some UI text, like
sub-menu items, renders just fine).

Has anybody done this successfully? I feel that I'm missing something
basic that I must change to resolve the issue.

ANN: TC Camp is less than 2 short weeks away!

2015-01-15 Thread Scott Prentice
If you haven't been to an unconference, you should know these aren't
like regular conferences. There are no juried presentations. No
powerpoint. No waiting through the next session so you can attend the
one you're really interested in.

You know how it is at a regular conference, the best conversations
happen in the hallways. Well, TC Camp is all hallway.

Session topics are chosen by you! They're chosen by the attendees on the
day of the event. Attendees vote on the session topics. Topics with
enough votes get scheduled into the agenda. Because you vote on the
session topics, you're guaranteed to find sessions you're interested in!
This is one conference where everything is relevant to Y-O-U. And at the
end of the day, in the summary session you can hear about what everyone
else learned in all the other sessions.

Want to talk about Documenting APIs? Nominate this topic for a session!
Want to talk about wrangling difficult SMEs? Nominate it! (Both of these
were topics at previous TC Camps.)

We have 4 morning workshops to help get your creative juices flowing:

- Adobe Workshop - Beyond Paper: Publishing enriched content to online

RE: FM 10 sometimes changes graphics paths

2015-01-15 Thread Heiko Haida

Hi Harro,

this is a bug and I think it has been discussed here already.

The link information will be truncated in the mif (not in the FM file
itself) to the max possilble no. of folders available in the folder
hierarchy at the level where the mif file is actually stored to (not
where the FM file is stored) !

In your case, you need 2 more hierarchical folder levels.

Hi Winfried,

yes, FrameMaker searches for missing graphics in the last successfully
opened graphics folder (of the actual session at least). So, if you have
just opened a first file, all missing graphics for the second file will
be replaced with graphics for the first file if they have the same
names, without checking if they are identical.

This can be very annoying and therefore I recommend to use unique IDs
for graphics (including version/revision) instead of or in addition to
simple names.

2015-01-15 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi,

I think this is a bug!
Steps:
Copy a file with a referenced graphics into another folder. The graphics path
might be .\graphics\test.eps
Open the first file.
Then open the copied file. It will show the referenced graphics although it
should complaint that the graphics file could not be found in .\graphics.
Obviously FrameMaker calculates for the copied file the graphics path to the
graphics file the first file.

That part of detecting the absolute file location is easy. After a program
accessing a file (through all the relative references), determining the
absolute location of a file is trivial in code.

The truncation mentioned by Harro is troublesome though.

Also, there is a path length limit in Windows - I thought it was 256
characters, but may be 64 characters? And this does not explain the network
file name issue mentioned ...

Subject: FM 10 sometimes changes graphics paths

hi all,

I recently ran into an issue: we received a set of FrameMaker files for
translation. After we sent the translated files back to the customer, they
complained that all of the image paths in their files were changed.
They were using relative paths that had lots of 'parent' references:
..\..\..\..\..\..\Graphics\etc

When I received these files, I placed them in a directory 4 levels deep:

F:\Customer\project\translation\incoming\blah.fm

When I opened this file Frame asked for the location of external graphics. I
selected 'Ignore all missing files' and saved the file as MIF.
When I inspected the MIF, the graphics paths were truncated to
..\..\..\..\Graphics\etc

So the path gets truncated to the number of levels available from the current
location.

When I store the file on an UNC path, it gets worse:
\\Server\Customer\project\translation\incoming\blah.fm
graphics paths:
\\Graphics\etc

In my opinion, this is a bug. When I select 'Ignore all missing files', Frame
should leave the existing paths alone.

Has anyone else seen the same behavior?
Harro de Jong

I can confirm this: at FrameMaker 12.0.3.424 I get ok results with RGB PDF, but
bizzarre ones with CMYK. What appears to be happening in the crude test I've
just run is that with CMYK selected a graphic in the background is being output
in the foreground and obliterating text.

Surely it's about time Adobe got CMYK working properly? It's been in use in the
printing industry since more or less the dawn of computer typesetting.

PDF Issue

2015-01-15 Thread Denis Daly
Hi,

Does anyone have any update on the following response, to a query I posted a
couple of months ago?

2: The response from an Adobe person here was that the Save as PDF using CMYK
has a bug (that they have been able to reproduce). No fix indication yet.

I am still unable to save a PDF using CMYK. It will save fine using RGB setting.

Any advice is appreciated.

Kind regards,
Denis Daly
