Wow. Way over my budget right now (especially after splurging on the
Treo 650, case, car charger, etc.). I'm not away from my PowerBook
for very long most of the time anyway. Even occasionally using a pay-
by-use hotspot would be more economical for me.

I also just found out that PDA Performance's "Contacts 5" is
incompatible with the Treo 650, and Palm will have to fix something
in their DmDeleteRecord API patch to fix this. I've been using it,
but I may stop for now and just use the built-in Contacts
application. The crash I attributed to the Nexus Dictionary may have
been from Contacts 5 ...

Thanks again for all the help and info.

The bundled "mail" application that Verizon puts on
the 650 - I couldn't get to work with the Mac at all.
It only wanted to sync with a PC. I tried setting it
up and fussed with it for about an hour when I finally
canned it in favor of Versamail. Nice of Verizon to
disable the Treo's ingrained Versamail functionality
so they could replace it with their own Mail software
that isn't mac compatible and then to remove the
Versamail installer from their recompiled CD but say
in the manual that you can install it from there...

As for the additional email address... no. Versamail
basically gives you a way to check your existing mail
(or any POP3 mail) from your Treo. (Handy if you
travel frequently.) I setup my wifes to recieve her
mail from our ISP, (She actually has multiple accounts
and Versamail allows her to check all of them.) but
leave the messages on the server. That way she can
still recieve and check them (respond if necessary)
but she still gets a copy of the email in the client
of her iBook when she gets home that she can save or
print if need be.

Didn't think to try installing Versamail from Virtual
PC... not sure how that would work... good thought. I
know you can't get to the Versamail installer from teh
mac side, though...

I'd give you the Verizon SMTP if I could remember it
off the top of my head, but I can't and my wife isn't
here with her Treo. Basically, the user account info
you need to setup the SMTP address is your text
messaging user ID @ verizon.com. So, yes, by default,
your text message ID is your phone number, and I
believe that will work. (As the user id, but not the
actual SMTP Server name)But if you haven't visited
their website and setup a text id account, you may
want to. The SMTP address for your account won't work
unless it's a valid account and it takes about 24hours
for your account to become valid after you've
registered... You don't need this now, but if you
wanted to add Versamail capability...

Remeber though, you can't get email access to your
Treo without internet access for your Treo. Of
course, my wife has to have it all ;-) And I think
for her to have it all added an additional $50 a month
to our already incredibly high verizon wireless bill.

Sionnach

For those that have exchange servers at work, I highly recommend Good
Technology's mail stuff. Runs on the 650, 600 or the old blackberry devices.
Its much better than versamail.

I guess its my years of blackberrying but I can thumb type at about 50 wpm...
Lol about graffiti ;-)

A Verizon rep told me the regular Palm software would work; this

calendars, etc from an existing Palm Pilot to one of these. This
was for the College's Dean, he's got his Palm pilot surgically

To the mac it's supposed to be like any other palm pilot via USB.
Dunno about BT.

Well I got it and have tried it out. It requires Palm Desktop
software installed from the CD that came with the Treo 650. I
couldn't get it to synch using Bluetooth at first (even though I got
my PB and Treo to recognize each other). But after one HotSync using
the cable, it has worked fine since. A couple of my old applications
were "quarantined," but I haven't had time to try them out or see if
there are any updates.

I do know that their wireless networking service did not work with

Re: Synchronizing Treo 650

2005-06-16 Thread Sionnach Aisling

How timely.

My wife has been pestering me for a Treo for sometime.
I wouldn't let her buy the 600 because the 650 has
WAY more bang for the buck But Verizon didn't want to
start selling teh 650 until recently.

Anyway, I bought one... And then the joy of getting
it to work with her ibook G4 began.

Bear in mind... she's a long time Palm user (as am I)
and already had Palm software installed on her
machine. However, it wasn't new enough to support the
650. You have to update to the version of Palm
software that ships with teh CD. No biggie there.

Now, lets get this out of the way first... Palm says
Mac is supported with the Treo 650. Verizon says Mac
is supported with the Treo 650.

Call Verizon support and see if they say the same
thing They told me it wasn't. Luckily, I know
enough about what I'm doing that I only needed minimal
information from teir tech support and was able to
guide them to the information i needed...

For the most part, everything will be fine with your
Treo 650 and the Mac. There are a lot of features
though that just popping in the CD and installing
won't give you. (Pop the same CD into a PC and you'll
get all kind of options.)

The main piece we had trouble with was VersaMail.

My wife wanted to be able to send/recieve email.

Well, VersaMail comes wiht your Palm... sortof.

Verizon recompiled Palm's install CD to make it "their
own" and in doing so left out a LOT of the
functionality for Macs. In fact, their own
instruction manual (Verizon's) says Mac users will
have to install VersaMail from the CD... But try to

in and install VersaMail from there. After that, it
would sync and work fine from her iBook.

I was able to get mail to recieve, but not send.
After quickly looking at the unit, I determined it was
becasue she was sending over verizon's network, so our
home ISPs SMTP Server setting wasn't working.
Solution... I needed a SMTP server from Verizon.

Called Verizon support... first mistake, my wife
tells the lady she's running this on a Mac. Tech
tells her this isn't supported on a Mac. (Verizon Doc
says otherwise). She tried to explain that her
problem was irrelevant to whateer operating system it
was running on, but tech wasn't getting it... She
finally gave me the phone in disgust.

I finally determined that not only did the tech not
know mac, they didn't know the Treo 650 either... only
the 600 (which runs a different version of Versamail
with far less features.) After holding the techs hand
and leading her through all the settings in Versamail
(wait, isn;t that her job??) She finally gives me the
SMTP server name I need. Of course... she gave it too
me wrong. I had to figure that out for myself. But
all in all, i got it working.

Since the, my wife LOVES her Treo650. I'm even
impressed with it, although I'm a graffiti guy and the
650 doesn't allow graffiti... just input from the
mini-keyboard, which my fat fingers don't like :-)

Why did you decide to get rid of the Kyocera and go
with the 650? How much do you want for the Kyocera?
I might be interested. Email me off list (about that
or if you need more help with your 650, I'll be happy
to do what I can.)

Synchronizing Treo 650

2005-06-14 Thread Harry Corsover
I just ordered a Treo 650 as an upgrade to my Kyocera 7135 smart
phone (which will be for sale, if anyone is interested).

I couldn't get many details from Verizon Wireless about how this
phone syncs with Macs. I've been using Palm Desktop (I've never used
iCal) to sync via USB, but the Treo has Bluetooth as well as a
version of Palm OS.

Has anyone been using a Treo 600 or 650 and syncing it with a Mac?
I'd appreciate hearing about your experience.

Thanks!

Regards,

Harry Corsover
