Re: Power Mac G5: how to repair a broken PSU?

2010-05-21 Thread Gorka Martinez Mezo
Maybe a local Apple dealer/repair center can diagnose the problem for free or a
reasonable fee? An acquitance had a problem with his old PowerMac G4 Gigabit
Ethernet and took it to his local repair center here in Spain. They told him
the problem was the front panel with the on/off button and told him they no
longer had spares for that computer model.

A new front panel was obtained via LEM swap and the machine works flawlessy now.

No charges paid for the diagnostics. Apple dealers around here have
ridiculously expensive repair fees, but in this case they behave very honestly
and friendly!

Re: Power Mac G5: how to repair a broken PSU?

2010-05-21 Thread Gorka Martinez Mezo

I'll try that. Thanks for the idea. I have a local certified apple repair
company (or whatever it is called) only a few drive minutes away.
I only fear they will want (too much) money for the diagnosis.

Well, call them about charges before moving your 25kg behemoth :-)

At least in Spain, you have the right to reject the reparation budget, so once
you know what the problem is, you can try get the spares cheaper elsewhere

For the G5 they probably still have spares.

I think pre 2004 PM G5s are already officially obsolete, don`t know about
your specific machine.

In any case, looks like G5 spares are pretty expesive everywhere! I have used
LEM swapt to get parts for my various computers at reasonable prices. Plus,
USPS postal charges are far lower than those I have experienced in Europe.
Unfortunately, we seem to be losing our Euro/USD advantage! ;-)

Good luck, those G5s are still pretty useful machines!

Re: Why are you (still) using PowerPC-based Macs?

2010-01-24 Thread Gorka Martinez Mezo
Every BW G3 and G4 was a breeze to work on, except for the nasty
sharp bits pulling the optical drive cable and after a while you
develop sufficient scar tissue across your knuckles that you don't
 notice.

Having work in both the beige G3 desktop and G4 GE, as well as inside many
generic PC boxes, the Macs are much easier to work with.

The same for the Performa 630 series, although more disassembly in needed. My
similar vintage Siemens-Nixdorf 486/100 desktop is much easier to work with,
altough the case in much higher. And has lots of slots.

Beige G3 problems

2009-12-08 Thread Gorka Martinez Mezo
I have an old 233MHz beige G3 desktop I workin with at a hobby.

last week I installed a trio of 128Mb SIMMs I bought through LEM Swap. I
exchanged the old memory for the new one following the Apple instructions per
the manual (and after checking through the net) and restarted the computer.
hardware started, but got the bomb dialog telling me there was a prolem with
some app and asking me for a secure reboot through the keyboard.

At that time I had only an USB keyboard as my ADB one was at home. Today I
finally got my old ADB keyboard, opnened the case again, reseated the memory
and hit the power up buttom in the keyboard.

... to no avail. I got the three lights in the keyboard, the PSU started t
whirl... and after a couple seconds the machie shut down.

Opened it again, checked everything was OK, all the connections secure, put back
the old memory SIMMs, closed and tried again to boot, getting the same results.

The machine is a beige desktop, 233MHz G3, 128 + 64 + 32Mb SIMMs , one PCI slot
with 2xUSB 1.1 and 2xFirewire 400, one 10Gb and one 40Gb HD and running Mac OS
9.1. The machine was recently resurrected after being unused for five years and
it ran smoothly until the memory swapt.

Any ideas? Maybe the PSU failed? Besides the memory SIMMs nothing else have
been touched

Thanks!

Re: Upgrading a Beige

2009-09-14 Thread Gorka Martinez Mezo

I recently put a Sonnet G4 in my BlueWhite. Works fine now I've
sorted the firmware - Sonnet's tool for this didn't work, but one from
 someone else did.

Liam, do you have the G4 enabler CD? I got a Sonnet G4 card for my beige G3 but
without the CD!

Would you be interested in a deal??

G4 Cube power supply question

2009-09-11 Thread Gorka Martinez Mezo

I just received a 450Mhz G4 Cube bought via LEM Swapt.

It is an US model and came with a US power supply. While I can easily find and
European style adapted for the plug, I have been unable to check if this power
suplly can be used with European voltage (220v). Many power sources have
switches for 110/220v, while others are exclusively used with either 110 or
220v. I have downloaded the users manuals at Apple site, but this question
isn`t answered.

Can I use the supplied power source with this Cube, or do I have to find an
European power source?

Thanks!

Re: Smurf

2009-09-08 Thread Gorka Martinez Mezo

The smurfs (pitufos in Spanish) were very popular in the early 1980s Spain.

When the PowerMac G3 BW appeared, it was quickly nicknamed pitufo as both
were blue and white.

The original iMac G3 was popularly known as cabezon (Big headed), while the
fancy iMac G4 was known as Lamparita (desk lamp).

Until the late 1990s Macs were a real rarity around here. The iMac G3 was the
first popular model and raised brand awareness quite a bit.

Sonnet Encore upgrade for desktop beige G3

2009-08-24 Thread Gorka Martinez Mezo

A couple months ago I bought in eBay an used 500MHz Sonnet Encore ZIF card to
upgrade a Beige desktop G3. The seller send me a pdf file with the installation
instructions but nothing else.

Due to work/burned computer/personal issues I wasn`t able to have a close look
to the upgrade intil now. I have read the instruction manual and I have some
doubts.

* First of all, has someone tried this upgrade before? Any tips?
* As I can see, I need to install de software included in the Sonnet CD to
install de G4 card, is that correct? The computer is currently running Mac OS
9.1 (Spanish), has 416Mb of RAM, a FireWire/USB PCI card and two HDs. It havent
been used for some years, but runs smoothly so far. VRM is correct.
