I'm almost over the debacle in Atlanta (although the $400 tickets still hurt a
bit), but my granddaughters are going to be visiting here from VA until the
3rd. Thought Pasadena on the 7th was nearly a sure thing..sigh! Hope the true
Gators show up in force to root our team on to victory.

RE: [gatortalk] RE: [gatornews] UF still trying to sell Sugar Bowl Tickets

2009-12-14 Thread Charlie
I know Gator fans were very disappointed not being able to play for another
National title but I'm curious about one thing. If we had been more
competitive against Alabama but still lost a close one would fans be more
apt to buy these tickets? I think another thing is the opponent, Cincinnati
though undefeated is still a "mid major" and it's hard to be excited about
the matchup. The most compelling thing about the game is of course it's
Tebow last in a Gator uniform, whether that's enough to send Gator fans in
large numbers to the Sugar Bowl I'll guess time will tell.

UF, Burton make
  pitch to Jordan Hicks

by Edward Aschoff

If football at Florida doesn't work out for Venice quarterback Trey Burton,
he should become the Gators' new recruiting coordinator. The oh-so athletic
Burton has a knack for making plays on the football field, but he's been
making recruiting plays for more than a year now, and he might have made his
biggest pitch this weekend.

Burton, along with 11 other prospects, made official visits to UF over the
weekend. He clicked immediately with West Chester, Ohio, Lakota West
linebacker Jordan Hicks. Rivals.com rates Hicks as the No. 1 linebacker in
the country and the 12th-best prospect nationally. He's developed much more
interest in the Gators in the last few months, but the loss of defensive
coordinator Charlie Strong was thought to maybe have an impact. From what
I've been told, Hicks, who only conducts weekly teleconferences to discuss
recruiting, is dealing directly with Florida coach Urban Meyer.

It's no surprise that Burton was in charge of hanging with Hicks, and Burton
said the two had a good time.

"He's a real cool guy," Burton said of Hicks. "I could see us being best
friends if he came to Florida. He's really chill. He's a really good athlete
and fun to be around."

Burton didn't say Hicks committed to the Gators, but does think Florida has
a really good shot at landing him. It helps that Hicks will be an early
enrollee and make a decision very soon.

Hicks has been on campus before and Burton said he didn't have to be much of
a salesman. It's not hard recruiting for one of the top college football
programs.

"There's really no persuading (Hicks)," he said. "We just tell him the
truth. It's the best college in the nation and there are just so many stats
that you can pull out (about Florida's program) and most of them people
don't even understand what they mean. It's unreal. What we can say compared
to what other colleges can say? It's the best place in the nation and I
think he had a good time."

The thing Burton said really impressed him and the other recruits this
weekend was the mood around the program even after the loss to Alabama.
Burton and a couple of prospects attended Florida's practice Saturday and he
said there was electricity in the air and that Meyer came up to him and said
it was the "best practice they've ever had." Players were very excited to
see the Gators come out with fire despite the situation they are in.

"Everybody's ready to redeem themselves for losing in the SEC championship
game," Burton said. "It's not what they wanted it to be in, but they're all
still happy with going to the Sugar Bowl. It's the biggest bowl after the
national championship."

I'm sure he sees it more as bending than flaunting. Reminds me of Billy D
when he first arrived at UF. Although, I don't think he got the NCAA
investigation as soon as Kiffin.

Of course, Billy D was bending. Kiffin has got to be breaking!!

This is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in recruiting in a long time.
Rubio is flown to his old high school with Kiffin, who is on a recruiting
trip, but Rubio wasn't recruiting? Of course he was recruiting. Even if he
didn't talk to one single recruit (which I don't believe for a second), his
presence with Kiffin was in and of itself recruiting.

Besides, there's no way this one isn't a problem from some angle. Either he
was recruiting, and the NCAA needs to get involved, or UT used taxpayer
money to pay for a personal trip for Rubio, and the Tennessee state attorney
needs to get involved. You can't have it both ways.

And the Vol tramp squad? How can that not be a violation? They are official
representatives of the University. Does anyone with an IQ over 60 (i.e. not
a Vol football player) really believe that these hot college girls really
drove 200 miles just to watch a couple of high school kids play football
because that's how they wanted to spend their Friday night? Give me a break!

I've never seen a coach publicly flaunt the rules the way Kiffin does. Most
cheaters at least have the courtesy to try to keep it secret. There needs to
be a rule that some number of blatant minor violations in a short period of
time equals a major violation.

All heck is about to break loose IF the NCAA and SEC don't start taking
secondary recruiting violations seriously.

Why should all the teams - except Tennessee - follow the rules if Tennessee
is going to go around and flaunt the fact that they do not intend to follow
the rules.

Recruiter at Tennessee Scrutinized by the SEC

By
 PETE THAMEL

The Southeastern Conference is examining a new issue involving Tennessee's
football recruiting, Mike Hamilton, the university's athletic director, said
Friday.

Hamilton said in a telephone interview that the SEC was looking into the
actions of a Tennessee recruiting intern, Steve Rubio, who flew to South
Florida with Coach Lane Kiffin recently and visited the athletic powerhouse
St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale.

Under
 N.C.A.A. rules, Rubio,
who graduated from Aquinas and volunteered there, is not allowed to recruit
off the Tennessee campus. Hamilton said the concern was whether Rubio did
recruiting work and contacted players while he was at the high school.

Hamilton said it was his understanding that Rubio did not recruit at the
high school. Hamilton said Tennessee had given the SEC all the information
the conference has requested. Whether to forward the matter to the N.C.A.A.,
Hamilton said, was "for someone else to make that determination."

News of the latest recruiting problem came on a day when
SI.com published a photograph of two Tennessee recruits,
Brandon Willis and Corey Miller of James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan,
S.C., with two hostesses from Tennessee's Orange Pride group. Also on
Friday, a summer basketball coach from Memphis called the Tennessee
recruiting hostess program the most "orchestrated and aggressive" he had
seen in 28 years on the recruiting circuit.

The SI.com photo confirmed the presence of the hostesses
at a high school game and illustrated their purpose in attending it. They
held a sign that read, "Miller and Willis Have Our Hearts."

Gary Willis, Brandon's father, said on Tuesday that his son had had no
contact with the hostesses, although running back Marcus Lattimore, who also
plays at Byrnes, said in an interview that the players had been expecting
the hostesses.

As the N.C.A.A. ex

I couldn't agree more. Coaches won't sit by and watch another take an unfair
advantage. The NCAA and SEC know it too, and they will nip this in the bud.

This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard in recruiting in a long time.
Rubio is flown to his old high school with Kiffin, who is on a recruiting trip,
but Rubio wasn’t recruiting? Of course he was recruiting. Even if he didn’t
talk to one single recruit (which I don’t believe for a second), his presence
with Kiffin was in and of itself recruiting.

Besides, there’s no way this one isn’t a problem from some angle. Either he was
recruiting, and the NCAA needs to get involved, or UT used taxpayer money to
pay for a personal trip for Rubio, and the Tennessee state attorney needs to
get involved. You can’t have it both ways.

And the Vol tramp squad? How can that  not be a violation? They are official
representatives of the University. Does anyone with an IQ over 60 (i.e. not a
Vol football player) really believe that these hot college girls really drove
200 miles just to watch a couple of high school kids play football because
that’s how they wanted to spend their Friday night? Give me a break!

I’ve never seen a coach publicly flaunt the rules the way Kiffin does. Most
cheaters at least have the courtesy to try to keep it secret. There needs to be
a rule that some number of blatant minor violations in a short period of time
equals a major violation.

Dear Gator Fans:

What a run; what a run this Gator football team has made over the
past two years, winning 22 straight games, an SEC title, a national
championship, and now, earning another BCS bowl game appearance.

These kids and these coaches need you now more than ever. As they
shake off the disappointment of the SEC Championship Game, they need
the Gator Nation to do the same, to rise up and stand behind them, to
be there in New Orleans for this amazing group of student-athletes and
a senior class that has won more games than any in the history of the
SEC.

Gator fans, let's answer the call by supporting this football team in
New Orleans on Jan. 1 for a battle of two Top 5 teams. For all of the
incredible moments and memories they have generated, it's the least
they deserve, and we are counting on you to show them what they've
meant to Gators everywhere.

Anyone can order tickets, whether you are a season ticket holder or
not. There are no restrictions on quantities of tickets, which can be
ordered by logging on to http://gatorzone.com/tickets
or by calling 1-800-34-GATOR. Thank you for your support of this
amazing football team, and remember, "in all kinds of weather, we all
stick together..."

See you in New Orleans, and Go Gators!

ESPN’s Kiper, McShay still project Carlos Dunlap as a 1st round pick
by Ben Volin
How much did Carlos Dunlap’s recent DUI hurt his NFL stock?
Some — but not as much as you would think, according to ESPN’s two draftniks, Mel Kiper and Todd McShay.
Kiper, in his Big Board released on Wednesday, lists Dunlap as the No. 17 overall prospect, down from No. 3 before the arrest. McShay, in his rankings published Sunday, lists Dunlap at No. 10.
Both analysts acknowledge some of the risks of drafting Dunlap — the arrest, plus a reputation for slacking — but still rave about his freakish athletic ability.
“Dunlap is very much a buyer-beware prospect,” McShay writes. “On one hand, a DUI arrest the week of the SEC championship game and questions about his work ethic raise red flags. On the other hand, 290-pound defensive linemen who move as well as he does are few and far between.”
Dunlap, a 20-year-old junior, has not declared if he will enter this April’s NFL Draft or return to Florida for one final season. His father, Carlos Sr., said before the SEC Championship Game that the family has always assumed Dunlap would leave Florida with a degree.
“We came to the University of Florida for a four-year education,” Dunlap Sr. said. “He has another year in school to go. Everybody’s talking about the draft. We’re not talking about the draft. It’s never even been a thought. We as a family never even sat down and talked about leaving school.”
Another motivation for Dunlap to stay — the potential to make back the millions of dollars he may have cost himself with the arrest. In the 2009 draft, the No. 3 overall pick signed for $31 million guaranteed, while the 10th pick signed for $17 million, the 17th pick for $10.245 million and the 32nd pick for $6.1 million.
Should Dunlap return, have a good season and stay out of trouble, he could theoretically earn his way back to the top of the 2011 draft (assuming there is one, of course).
Dunlap was not the only Florida prospect ranked highly by Kiper and McShay. Kiper projects cornerback Joe Haden as the No. 8 overall pick and tight end Aaron Hernandez at No. 19. McShay has Haden at No. 12 and linebacker Brandon Spikes at No. 19.

[gatortalk] RE: [gatornews] Recruiter at Tennessee Scrutinized by the SEC

2009-12-14 Thread keith
All heck is about to break loose IF the NCAA and SEC don't start taking secondary recruiting violations seriously.

Why should all the teams - except Tennessee - follow the rules if Tennessee is going to go around and flaunt the fact that they do not intend to follow the rules.

Recruiter at Tennessee Scrutinized by the SEC
By PETE THAMEL
The Southeastern Conference is examining a new issue involving Tennessee’s football recruiting, Mike Hamilton, the university’s athletic director, said Friday.
Hamilton said in a telephone interview that the SEC was looking into the actions of a Tennessee recruiting intern, Steve Rubio, who flew to South Florida with Coach Lane Kiffin recently and visited the athletic powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale.
Under N.C.A.A. rules, Rubio, who graduated from Aquinas and volunteered there, is not allowed to recruit off the Tennessee campus. Hamilton said the concern was whether Rubio did recruiting work and contacted players while he was at the high school.
Hamilton said it was his understanding that Rubio did not recruit at the high school. Hamilton said Tennessee had given the SEC all the information the conference has requested. Whether to forward the matter to the N.C.A.A., Hamilton said, was “for someone else to make that determination.”
News of the latest recruiting problem came on a day when SI.com published a photograph of two Tennessee recruits, Brandon Willis and Corey Miller of James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C., with two hostesses from Tennessee’s Orange Pride group. Also on Friday, a summer basketball coach from Memphis called the Tennessee recruiting hostess program the most “orchestrated and aggressive” he had seen in 28 years on the recruiting circuit.
The SI.com photo confirmed the presence of the hostesses at a high school game and illustrated their purpose in attending it. They held a sign that read, “Miller and Willis Have Our Hearts.”
Gary Willis, Brandon’s father, said on Tuesday that his son had had no contact with the hostesses, although running back Marcus Lattimore, who also plays at Byrnes, said in an interview that the players had been expecting the hostesses.
As the N.C.A.A. examines the matter, it is likely to focus on whether it can prove that the Tennessee coaching staff sent the hostesses to the high school specifically to recruit. While their presence would most likely be considered a violation, its severity would probably be determined by the extent of the coaches’ knowledge. “I don’t want to talk about that,” Gary Willis said on Friday. “Let the N.C.A.A. do what they’re going to do.”
The New York Times reported on Wednesday that the recruiting hostesses traveled nearly 200 miles to attend the game played by Willis, Miller and Lattimore. The N.C.A.A. is examining Tennessee’s hostess program in a review that has covered at least six prospects, including Miller, Willis and Lattimore. Tennessee has yet to receive a formal letter of inquiry from the N.C.A.A.
“I’m not at liberty to talk about the issue of Orange Pride,” Hamilton said Friday night. Kiffin declined to comment through a university spokesman.
Also on Friday, Keith Easterwood, a veteran summer basketball coach, said that on a visit last year with his son, a football recruit, he had to ask a hostess to stop brushing her breasts against both him and his son.
He recalled saying, “Young lady, if you don’t stop doing that, we’ve got a problem.”
Easterwood said that he took a group of basketball players to a Western Kentucky football game at Tennessee this year, and that the presence of the hostesses had his players “literally reduced to blubbering idiots.”
“I’ve been up there five times, four for football and one basketball visit,” Easterwood said. “My observation is that this is a very organized operation. These girls have obviously been groomed. There’s a lot of eye contact and touching.”
The inquiries are creating problems for Tennessee, but Hamilton said that was part of having a successful yet controversial coach like Kiffin.
“It’s like any situation as an institution — you’re always concerned about an institution’s public relations and integrity,” he said. “We’re always evaluating those things.”
Thayer Evans contributed reporting.
