Hi Kathy,
I put the ppd file in:
 /usr/share/cups/model/HP-DeskJet_420C-hpijs.ppd

I believe that is what the directions said to do. Still don't have a device
to select from in the dropdown combo box.

Thanks Again,

Hi Kathy,

I have stopped and restarted the cupsd before and after every change.
I have the parport compiled into the kernel, not as a separate module, but I
can certainly try that.

Here is a section of my /etc/log/cups/error_log file after stopping and

I read in another of your posts that you had stop/start cupsd, however,
I ran into the same problem when setting up my printer. After stopping

Yes, several times in fact. I even rebooted the computer, making sure the
printer was connected and turned on before turning on the computer again.
The printer recognized the POST from the computer and reset itself.

 Is the parport module loaded?
I have it directly compiled into the kernel. I'm using devfs, which does find
a reason to create /dev/lp0; to which I can cat a text file to.

Do you have any error messages regarding this in /var/log/cups?
I did have one Allow in the wrong place, corrected it, still no joy.

After I restarted the computer, I went back into the web browser, using the
Add Printer wizard, I can enter the queue name, but when I click on
Continue, I still do NOT get any devices listed in the Device drop-down
box. When I looked in /dev I had /dev/lp0 - printers/0 I changed the link
to be /dev/lp0 - /dev/printers/0 I restarted the cupsd daemon, still with
no joy.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Harlan...

Have you tried to configure with this command taken from the printing-howto:

 # foomatic-configure -s cups -p $printer_model_number -c
   $print_device_path -n queue name -d driver ?

If so (I tried that too), you should remove the queue and just give a
name (here according to my interpretation foomatic believes you are
   referring to something named queue):

# foomatic-configure -s cups -p $printer_model_number -c

Re: [gentoo-user] cups printing problems

2003-11-16 Thread Harlan
Here is what I have tried:

bash-2.05b# grep 420C /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/printer/*
/usr/share/foomatic/db/source/printer/HP-DeskJet_420C.xml:printer
id=printer/HP-DeskJet_420C
/usr/share/foomatic/db/source/printer/HP-DeskJet_420C.xml: modelDeskJet
420C/model

bash-2.05b# grep HP-DeskJet_420C /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/driver/*
/usr/share/foomatic/db/source/driver/cdj500.xml:
idprinter/HP-DeskJet_420C/id!-- HP DeskJet 420C --
/usr/share/foomatic/db/source/driver/hpijs.xml:
idprinter/HP-DeskJet_420C/id!-- HP DeskJet 420C --

bash-2.05b# foomatic-configure -s cups -p HP-DeskJet_420C -c file:/dev/lp0
-n HP420C -d hpijs
lpadmin: Unable to connect to server: Connection refused
Could not set up/change the queue HP420C!

I have tried the device both with and without the file:, same results.

Thanks,

Harlan...

I am trying to get printing across multiple Gentoo systems. I am able to

I need to specify the parallel port (I have a DeskJet 420C), but in the
printer add portion of the admin web page, I don't have any devices
  listed?

I've tried editing the printer.conf file, but when I run
foomatic-configure, I just get errors about an invalid line.

When I try running foomatic-configure, per documentation, I get an error:
lpadmin: Unable to connect to server: Connection refused
Could not set up/change the queue HP420C!

As far as I can tell, there is no existing HP420C queue left over from
  previous tries.

Have you tried to configure with this command taken from the
 printing-howto:

  # foomatic-configure -s cups -p $printer_model_number -c
$print_device_path -n queue name -d driver ?

If so (I tried that too), you should remove the queue and just give a
name (here according to my interpretation foomatic believes you are
referring to something named queue):

 # foomatic-configure -s cups -p $printer_model_number -c
$print_device_path -n name -d driver

should work, name is what you want to call your printer
