[Gimp-user] install problem

2002-06-18 Thread ShelbyMustang427

i don't know if i can email this addres but it's the only addres i saw that
could be useful on the gimp home page, but i downloaded gimp through cnet.com
and when i try and open the 10.7 meg file it wants to associate the file to a
program ( or in other words a program to open it with). is this a result of
an incomplete file, or maybe a mac version, or could the problem just be that
i need to open it with an install prgram? Thank you for you time.

Gratefully,

[Gimp-user] install probs

2004-06-10 Thread squareyes
Hi all,
I had Gimp 2 up and running (from gimp-2.0.0-richard.1mdk.i586.rpm) on
Mandrake 10, which was installed as an update from Man 9.1. Installed
Gimp 2.0 with no probs, but have since had to reformat.
Installed Mandrake 10 as a fresh install, now am having probs getting
Gimp 2 to install from same rpm. Keep getting

"Installation failed, some files are missing:
   /mnt/cdrom/gimp-2.0.0-richard.1mdk.i586.rpm
You may want to update your urpmi database"
Installed urpmi.setup to try and update, have no idea what I am doing,
as it seems to want to update the 4 Mandrake install disks, which is not
possible.
Have tried copying rpm to hard drive and installing from there, same.
Tried the rpm from Mandrake cooker site, and get this error message.
"Some package requested cannot be installed:
gimp2_0-2.0.1-1mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied libgimpwidgets-2.0.so.0)
do you agree ?"
As I am unsatisfied most of the time I had to agree :-)
What is a libgimpwidget?, which ones do I need?, where would I get
them?, and if I can get them, what do I do with them? (without being
rude :-) ) Sorry I am a rank beginner here.

Any helpfull suggestions would be most gratefully accepted.
Many thanks in advance,
Take Care

You write that you have an Mandrake, and downloaded for Fedora.
Normally it's recommended to pick a package for the distribution.

what version of Mandrake Linux?

I had posted to this list a detailed explanation of how to build the
GIMP forMa\ndrake 10.0 - I suppose you are on 10.1 - but that
expanatio n would work fine for 10.1 and the newer GIMP - (of course,
yu'd need newer versions of all the packages and apps listed).

Alternatviely, you can search for an RPM for Mandrake 10.1 - thre
should be one somewhere.

I installed the GimpShop rpm from a link on the page below and it worked for
my Mandrake 10.1 system. It's uses Gimp version 2.2.4.

http://plasticbugs.com/index.php?p=241

It's a hacked version of Gimp but seems to have all of the functionality and
new features of Gimp. Just enter "gimp" to start it.

2008-08-19 Thread J . W . J . Geenen

Hi,

here is my path: /Applications/Gimp-2.4.6/Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/
Share/gimp/2.0/
There is no help folder in 2.0. I made such a help folder and then a
moved the two help files into this folder.

I looked in the preferences/Folders but there is no help folder.
I followed this path too: /Users/geenen/Library/ApplicationSupport/
Gimp/ and there was not a help folder. I make some one and let it
empty because every folder is empty.

Again it is not possible to call the help. Always I get this message:
The GIMP help files are not found.
Please install the additional help package or use the online user
manual at http:// docs.gimp.or

I downloaded the help documentation from darwingimp and tried to
install it but it is impossible to install this version.

The following message is what I get.
Select a destination
You cannot install Gimp-help on this volume. Please make sure, that
you have Gimp.app installed in the Applications Folder.

I have Gimp.app installed in the Applications Folder as you can
verify in my path at the top of this letter.

It seems that Gimp does not recognize the additions which I made.

The two help files? For context-sensitive help you need the HTML version
of the manual. This package has several hundred files.

I have downloaded The Gimp user manual but that is not what I needed.
I have several questions to this object.
Q1. what is the exact name and url that I must install
Q2. where are the files of the Gimp user manual located in the Gimp
application

Q3. why do I not see the help folders which I made by hand

I searched and found a gimp-help-2.4.0.tar.bz2 version. Is that what
I needed?

[Gimp-user] Install Gimp 2.0

2004-05-16 Thread Squareyes
Hi all,
I have been watching this list since early March this year and have to
admit am getting more confused by the day.
I have been using The Gimp to edit my digital photo's (version 1.2.3
which I am very impressed with, very logical to use)
and have been watching the list talking about Gimp 2. and would like to
try it.
I am afraid I have no hope of ever compiling it, so have downloaded a
series of rpm's from Xach. I have a couple of questions.
1. Am using Mandrake 9.1, and will use rpmdrake, will these Rpm's be
suitable for it?
2. If they are suitable, is there any particular order I should install
them in?
3. Do I need to install the Rpm's marked as devel. e.g.
atk-devel-1.6.0-1.i386.rpm ?
4. Do I need to remove any files relating to the version I am now using?
I have read on this list that the 2 versions will co-exist.

Thanks for your patience, we beginners must be a trial to you all, am
afraid my brain is getting too old to learn too many new tricks, but am
still trying.

The list of Rpm's I downloaded from Xach are listed below.

Winton,
I'm no Mandrake expert by any means, but this error sounds like you are
missing some needed GTK+ files. I suspect MDK 10 only installed the
Gnome files needed to run most programs, but didn't some that Gimp
needed. Just a guess, not certain. I would think when trying to
install, it would give you more details though. What you might try is
to install the rpm from a shell with:
rpm -Uhv gimp-2.0.0-richard.1mdk.i586.rpm"

If there are unmet dependencies or conflicts, they will show there.

libgimpwidget is actually part of the Gimp rpm file. You can find this
out by doing: rpm -q --whatprovides (name of file)
This of course will only work if the file is installed on your system,
otherwise you can view the files in the rpm with programs like Midnight
Commander or Kpackage.

Have you considered just uninstalling Gimp, downloading Gimp from the web
site and installing it yourself? This means stepping out of the world of
RPMs but that is not a fatal thing. You can unzip and untar the
downloaded file with one command tar zxvf (name of file.) Then follow the
instructions that come with.

Frequently it is easier to sidestep a complex problem as opposed to
debugging it in the entrails of the system.

Re: [Gimp-user] install probs

2004-11-22 Thread Joao S. O. Bueno Calligaris

You could also grab a new rpm from a mandrake contrib repository -
there probably could be something more up to date for mandrake 10.0

But that won't give you GIMP2.2 anyway, neither will upgrading
toMandrake 10.1.
But building the GIMP from CVS on a mandrake 10.0 is not an authomatic
task, but not too hard. Just try the ./configure scripts, note down
what it says is missing, and install from most recent stable tarball,
each required software (or from rpm, if there is a compatible version
of said package) - the nice side of this is taht once you have
everything in place, you can always easily build the latest GIMP.

I strongly suggest to read the pkg-config manpage. It helps a lot to

i was going to suggest that you add the path to /etc/ld.so.conf but i
just checked mine and the path to /usr/lib (which is where my glib
lives) is not there.

i read the pkg-config manpage:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ pkg-config --modversion glib-2.0
2.4.8

then i confirmed where i thought it should be:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls /usr/lib/pkgconfig/glib*
/usr/lib/pkgconfig/glib-2.0.pc /usr/lib/pkgconfig/glib.pc

then i confirmed where it is not:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls /usr/local/lib/glib*
ls: /usr/local/lib/glib*: No such file or directory

i dont know the reason it works for me and not for you. perhaps at this
point it is good to ask what your distribution is and what version of it
you are running.

have you built other things? you might need to install the -dev version
of glib also. actually, it would be very good to know if you have
successfully built other software.

[Gimp-user] Install Gimp help files.

2007-01-31 Thread John R. Culleton
I unzipped and untarred the help files. I ran ./configure in that directory.
When I ran "make" I got a slew of messages of the form:

I/O error : Attempt to load network entity
http://www.docbook.org/xml/4.3/docbookx.dtd
../src/appendix/bugs.xml:3: warning: failed to load external
entity "http://www.docbook.org/xml/4.3/docbookx.dtd";

...and of course no usable help files.

It would be nice if the help files were integral to the Gimp distribution.
Perhaps that is too simplistic. I have Slackware Linux 11.

GIMP looks for the help files in the folder $prefix/share/gimp/2.0/help.

I can't tell you what $prefix is for your system. Perhaps just look for
the system-wide GIMP brushes folder, then place the help files in the
same place.

Isn't there a help package for the Mac with an installer that takes care
of this? http://darwingimp.sourceforge.net/download.html seems to have

The two help files? For context-sensitive help you need the HTML version
of the manual. This package has several hundred files.

Hello,
Squareyes wrote:
I have been watching the list talking about Gimp 2. and would like to

Good luck :)
1. Am using Mandrake 9.1, and will use rpmdrake, will these Rpm's be
suitable for it?
I'm not sure.
2. If they are suitable, is there any particular order I should install
them in?
I know when I was running an RPM based system, I used to try to install
the last one first, get the list of dependencies, and install them in
order until things worked. That's not an optimal solution :)

The approximate order of installation should be
glib
atk
fontconfig
pango
gtk
gimp
gimp-docs
3. Do I need to install the Rpm's marked as devel. e.g.
atk-devel-1.6.0-1.i386.rpm ?
Not unless you plan on compiling the GIMP from source. Nor do you need
automake or autoconf, unless you plan to build from CVS.

4. Do I need to remove any files relating to the version I am now using?
I have read on this list that the 2 versions will co-exist.
You don't need to remove anything. It is possible that your packaging
system won't like having 2 versions of the GIMP installed, but IIRC
there is a way to force RPM to install a new copy alongside the old one,
rather than have it replace it.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Dave.

I think the RPMs provided by Xach is for Red Hat Linux 9 only.

If I recall correctly you can just put all the RPMs in one directory and
do "rpm -Uvh *.rpm". The installation order will then be determined by
the internal dependencies.

You only need to install the -devel RPMs if you intend to compile
anything against the installed libraries.

GIMP 1.2.x and 2.0.x will happily co-exist.

as will gimp-1.0 and gimp-1.1 and gimp-1.3 exist with gimp-1.2 and
gimp-2.0, if you are like me and have little things from all of them

gimp-2.1, which is supposed to become gimp-2.2, will be compatible
with gimp-2.0 so there is no point in having the two versions
installed side-by-side. When gimp-2.2 is ready it will happily replace
gimp-2.0 and plug-ins compiled for gimp-2.0 will continue to work.

That's the reason that gimp-2.1 cannot be installed into the same
prefix as gimp-2.0. It's supposed to replace it. Currently there's the
temporary condition that gimp-2.1 installs quite some things into
directories versioned as 2.1. This is supposed to be changed back to
2.0 when gimp-2.2 is ready.

thank you for the explanation.

my memory now is that there were so many things (plug-ins) that would
need name changes for the new previews and similar changes.

if this memory is correct, is this a simple grep something and change it
to something else operation? i am always on the look out for a cool use
for something like that "removecruft" thing someone wrote way back when.
is this one of those cases? perhaps not "removecruft" but
"updatepreviewability" causing the temporary part of your explanation to
be a wonderfully short case of temporary; i have seen some cool things

Perhaps you should consider using a distribution then that packages the
help files for you. Building them from the source is definitely not
trivial and it is not something that a user should have to deal with.
That's why a reasonable Linux distribution does this for you.

I assume you have a network, and another box with the X

The best solution I can think of is to telnet (or shh) to
the server, and run the install. This should open the
install window on the host you are working from. However
you may be slightly hampered by security measures or the
lack of information I can provide at the moment.
