Comments : Camilo Fernandes Floriano's below post is very humorous but very true. Some of our so called Goans are Goans only in name. Which 'Desh' and what 'Prem' they are referring to? I 'Desh' they mean India, since these chaps don RSS colours it has to be. I guess. Did India exist 450 years ago? If they plan to undo Portuguese, Goa cannot be part of India. India came into existence in 1947, 4 centuries after Portuguese occupation of Goa. That means Goa was never part of India until its forceful occupation by India. Now, if their reference of 'Desh' and 'Prem' is Goa then undo anything and everything the 'Portuguese' had done and left in Goa after 450 year of rule And first thing First. FF's should stop receiving pension that they had been getting by force since 1961 and in fact should return all the money that they had received in the past. It is because of 'Portuguese' they get it. So no 'Portuguese' no 'Money' Change the Goa's Civil Code which is a Portuguese law that gives all Goans (including RSS and BJP in Goa) undivided inheritance rights to Sons and Daughter. Demolish all the 'Portuguese' build houses, and first should be Raj Bhavan then 'Camara' buildings in all towns, Marmagoa Port and the Old Goa Churches etc. Then a very pertinent question of 'evacuee property' but it should not be Mayem but Dabolim and and all the illegally occupied land by Army and Navy that includes Ilha de Anjediva. Lastly revoke the 1974 treaty signed by Indian with Portugal if RSS and BJP sponsored DNS feels humiliated by the Portuguese Rule in Goa. Goa had not experienced events like Jallianwala Bagh in Goa to condemn Portuguese. India had many events like Jallianwala Bagh yet had written its constitution in the same colonial language and runs its day to day administration in the very same colonial language 'ENGLISH'. Goans had lived as part of Portugal for 450 years much longer then they lived with India. The Indian Prime Minister, Nehru hAD himself had admitted that Goans had a different culture than that of rest of India. RSS and BJP sponsored DNS is playing vote bank politics nothing much in it. If RSS and BJP sponsored DNS want to turn the clock in the annals of history books then they have to go back to their mother womb and be born again! RSS and BJP Murdabad! Viva Goa! Viva Portugal! Re: [Goanet] Anti-Portuguese resolutions (update)
This whole controversy is another example where Goans have a difficult time to see beyond the tip of their nose. The whole idea of a celebration (if one wants to term it such) would be for socio-economic advancement of the natives - both Hindu and Catholic in Goa. If Goans were smart, this event could be a bonanza-year for tourism to Goa from Portugal and else where in Europe. Why are the Brits so ga-ga about the upcoming royal wedding? It is all about tourists pounds ... pounds ... pounds. Similarly President Obama's recent visit to St. Xavier's college, Mumbai, would have been utilized by other groups (including Indian) to maximum advantage. Sikhs were very disappointed on the last minute cancellation of the President's visit to Amritsar. The alumni of SFX college should have started a fund and along with a matching grant from the US state department have a new wing built onto the college for the benefit of the next generation of Mumbai's residents, graduating from SFX college. It is still not too late for this effort. Regards, GL - Flora I definitely think there is nothing better to do in life than dwell in the past and rot in the dung!

From: "U. G. Barad" In this context, Gabe Menezes asks: "Does it mean that to bring about a complete reversal, Catholics will have to revert to Hindu names and also renounce their Religion?" Gabe, I did not know that Catholicism originated in Portugal. **No, but it is the Portuguese and other unknown harbingers of Faith who brought the wealth of Christian Faith to India and Goa. We should understand that the objective of the protest is to ensure that the Portuguese as a colonist are not glorified. It is my impression that the present day Portuguese do not empathise with those Portuguese who did so much harm to others in colonies all over the world. They also do not empathise with the regime of Salazar and others. **Let us not judge them with our modern eyes... They saw things in a different light. What is wrong is wrong, but time gives a different perspective to them... Salazar lived in his own times, doing what was needed for those times... "Present day Portuguese" do not have interest in Goa, as their ancestors had. Our present day Indians have more interest in the "Portuguese passport"... Present day fundamentalists of India should also not be glorified. Regards. Fr.Ivo

Re: [Goanet] FORMER IGP KD SINGH SON’S CAR CRASH C OST THE TAX PAYER Rs. 4 ,33, 200
Wrt this matter, I agree entirely with Aires' disgust with these babulals. The basic point is this: Unless KD Singh reported the car to be missing, when he realised it was missing, it is his responsibility. The is a well known common law doctrine called RESPONDEAT SUPERIOR i.e. Let the master answer. KD Singh should be sued not only for the damage to the car but also for the damage to public property (apart from being charged for dangerous driving). jc The TORT doctrine that imposes responsibility upon one person for the failure of another, with whom the person has a special relationship (such as PARENT AND CHILD, employer and employee, or owner of vehicle and driver), to exercise such care as a reasonably prudent person would use under similar circumstances. [Goanet] FORMER IGP KD SINGH SON’S CAR CRASH C OST THE TAX PAYER Rs. 4 ,33, 200
The 4th December 2009 car crash by the son of Goa’s former IGP, Mr. K.D.Singh while driving his father’s official a Toyota Innova GA-07-G-0063 has cost the State exchequer Rs 4, 33, 200. This has been revealed in information obtained under the Right to Information Act. Siddharth Singh the IGP’s son was driving his father’s official vehicle along with his friends to a night club at Vasco that late night when he crashed the vehicle also damaging two electricity poles. The information obtained further reveals that the Goa Government has given financial and administrative approval for the repair of that vehicle and has decided not to recover the amount from either the former IGP or his son. The file notings obtained also reveals that almost 6 months after the accident, the Under Secretary Home on 16/6/2010 in a letter to the Director General of Police sought clarification as to how without the knowledge of the official driver the IGP’s son got the keys of that vehicle. In a reply sent around two months later the police state that in case the vehicle was required for any contingency at night the driver had parked the vehicle at the IGP’s residence and left the keys there. Director of Prosecution Mrs. Shobha Dhumaskar had in her legal opinion given on 22nd February this year opined that the IGP’s son should not be charge sheeted in the accident case that was registered against him. While not suggesting any further investigation in the matter the Director of Prosecution in her opinion had stated that despite the heavy damage to the vehicle, there was no evidence of rash and negligent driving and that it would be difficult to prove the case against the IGP’s son Sidharth Singh. The RTI information reveals that while former IGP Mr.KD.Singh and his son who was unauthorizedly driving his father’s official vehicle are scot free a different yardstick for a police driver who was involved in an accident in discharge of his official duties. In another information furnished under the Right to Information Act it has been informed that Rs 1833 a month is being deducted from the salary of Police Driver Vinod Malvankar for an accident a Police van being driven by him had met with on 27th August 2003. The records reveal that police constable Vinod Malvankar is being penalized despite the Additional Sessions Judge and a police departmental inquiry as well ruling that he was not driving rash or negligently. If indiscipline and cover up was by higher ups in the police force not much could be expected from the lower ranks. May be this liberation day the Goa Government should reward former IGP Mr. K.D.Singh with a gold medal for having successfully drilled a Rs 4, 33, 200 deep hole into the State exchequer. [Goanet] Jaggery and buildings
There was a discussion on Saligao-Net [http://groups.google.com/group/saligao-net] about why jaggery was used in old buildings in Goa. Below are some hints. Anyone would have a clue? (I hope JC will not charge me with promoting more stereotypes about the Goan*s*). -- FN Frederick Noronha :: +91-9822122436 :: +91-832-2409490 -- Forwarded message -- On 27 November 2010 10:09, dilip dacruz wrote: > > 1. Asked to explain the reason he said, "jaggery attracts large black ants (domle/katmuyo) which are natural enemies of termites. They kill and drag all termite workers to their nests". This is a part of Goa’s traditional biological control. But the hidden termites are perfect defenders of their nests and even snakes are scared to enter a live termite nest. So the termite conquests in Goa would continue. Re: [Goanet] [Goanet-News] NEWS-GULF: Pratibha launches Indian Workers Resource Centre
That's fantastic news for the residents of the U.A.E. Howevr, how about something for workers in this country who need redress? My daughter is facing problems with non payment of salary for several months due to being a freelancer, however there seems to be no one who oversees the rights of freelance workers in this country, even though there is a huge number of Indians working freelance. If anyone knows whom she can approach, I would be most grateful. Thanks. From: Goanet News To: "Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994!" Sent: Thu, November 25, 2010 4:39:21 AM Subject: [Goanet-News] NEWS-GULF: Pratibha launches Indian Workers Resource Centre Pratibha launches Indian Workers Resource Centre Smita Gupta Low wages, delayed salary payments, isolation, combined with a lack of knowledge of the laws under which they can seek redress have, only too often, turned the dreams of Indian blue collar workers living abroad into a nightmare. The Union Ministry of Overseas Affairs has now initiated as a pilot project, a free, walk-in resource centre providing Indian workers, especially semi-skilled and unskilled labourers, direct access to welfare services in the United Arab Emirates, located in Dubai. The Indian Workers Resource Centre (IWRC) was inaugurated late on Tuesday by President Pratibha Patil, who is on a goodwill tour of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Syria. Later, briefing journalists, Secretary (East) Latha Reddy said that while such visits provided an occasion to celebrate the success stories of Indians living abroad, it was important not to forget those less fortunate. Secretary (Ministry of Overseas Affairs) Didar Singh said the IWRC experiment followed the setting up, four years ago in Delhi, of the Overseas Workers Resource Centre, especially for workers from Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab. Dr. Singh said the objective was to provide a “seamless service” for those who wished to go abroad to work from the moment they took the decision to do so. He added that while the UAE centre was the first, the government hoped to create such facilities in other countries with a large NRI population. Of the 25 million overseas Indians, 10 million are NRIs, Indian passport-holders, and of these 5.5 million are in the Gulf. The United Arab Emirates accounts for 1.7 million, of which close to 70 per cent are blue collar workers, many working in appalling conditions. Now, workers in distress can call a toll-free number, 800 46342 (800-India), from anywhere in the UAE to seek counselling, information or advice relating to legal issues such as contracts and financial matters. The centre, located on Khalid bin Waleed Street, will be open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. every day, with phone lines open 24 hours a day and available in seven languages, including English, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu. In cases of disputes concerning contracts and other legal documents, workers will be referred to a qualified adviser. In addition, sessions will be arranged for labourers in need of psychological counselling. Clearly, the need to set up such facilities was felt as Indian missions abroad did not have the resources or expertise to cater to the welfare of expatriate workers adequately. These services will be in addition to the existing services offered by Indian missions and social cultural organisations of India running in the UAE. Re: [Goanet] Anti-Portuguese resolutions passed by group in Panaji
Reading the "Goanet article" , on issue relating to Portuguese , I definitely think there is nothing better to do in life than dwell in the past and rot in the dung! Shame on the mentality that we argue and debate on religion in this modern era, have we not progressed from the time where Brahmins would not cross the path of a lower caste, where today a Brahim would happily lives in 5 star hotel and dine the food cooked by may be lower caste , where once he would not pass shadow of? What is shocking is that educated doctors and writers dwell in the same mentality of the in par with uneducated lower mentality, instead of doing better for the ‘good of mankind’ this intelligent wasted on issue “of past and religion converting”, distorted the good, a reader like myself feel disgusted to know the no matter how educated a man is , the education is not of educating the “ mind” but merely certificates to source of money and when it comes to religion he will worship anything he think there is God within it!!! --- On Sat, 27/11/10, Gabe Menezes <> wrote: From: Gabe Menezes Subject: Re: [Goanet] Anti-Portuguese resolutions passed by group in Panaji To: "Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994!" <> Date: Saturday, 27 November, 2010, 9:53 AM On 26 November 2010 18:20, U. [Goanet] New Miracle Takes Fr. Agnel Closer to Sainthood

Stay tuned to Gulf Goans e-Newsletter - everyday someone, somewhere learns a little. New Miracle Takes Fr. Agnel Closer to Sainthood Devotees of Venerable Agnelo D’Souza are excited after sending to Rome a report of a miracle attributed to the Goan priest. Venerable Agnelo Gustavo Adolfo de Souza, a member of the indigenous Missionaries of St. Francis Xavier, died in 1927 and his canonization process began 20 years later. Rome declared him venerable, the second stage in the canonization process, in 1986. Father Hilario Fernandes, vice postulator of the cause, says although thousands of miracles are attributed to the priest, his canonization process hit bottlenecks on at least eight occasions. In one instance, a blood sample sent to Rome was lost in transit. The new miracle is about a 62-year-old woman, who suffered from metal poisoning. She was admitted in a hospital and doctors said she would die. But after the woman’s relatives prayed to Venerable Agnelo she recovered. Father Fernandes said they sent the case to Rome on Nov. 15. “We hope this will clinch his fate to be declared blessed,” he said. The priest, who belongs to the same congregation as Venerable Agnelo, said doctors fear their hospitals and profession would suffer if they certify a patient’s recovery is medically unexplainable. Father Fernandes claims Venerable Agnelo is second only in popularity saint among people in Goa after Saint Francis Xavier. Fiona Carnerio, an Agnelo devotee, says having a saint of the soil would help keep people’s faith intact. Jesus Ribeiro, another Catholic, blamed Rome for going slow in processing the cases of candidates from developing countries. The canonization process begins with granting the title “Servant of God.” Candidates who fulfill certain criteria are declared “Venerable.” The next stage is beatification, for which a miracle attributed to the candidate is needed. Sainthood requires another miracle under the same condition. >From the Desk of... Agnelo Gustavo Adolfo de Souza was born on January 21, 1869 in Gaumvaddy, Anjuna, Bardez, Goa (India). Orphaned at the age of eleven, he was a brilliant and devout student. Agnelo joined the Minor Seminary at Mapusa and then went to Rachol Seminary. The house where Fr. Agnel was bornhttp://www.goa-world.com/goa/fr-agnels/2.htm On July 17, 1897, the feast of Our Lady of Pilar, Agnelo, then a Sub-Deacon, was admitted as a candidate to the Missionary Society of St. Francis Xavier, Pilar, and on May 22, 1898, he made his first Profession. Ordained on September 24, 1898, Fr. Agnelo first worked as a teacher and then in the Missions. In 1920, he was appointed Spiritual Director in Rachol Seminary. The Seminarians found in him a model to follow and feltthemselves secure in his guidance. On November 20, 1927 he died in odour of sanctity. He had suffered an acute cerebral thrombosis on the previous day while he was preaching at the Vespers of Sacred Heart of Jesus. Many thousands of favors have been published in various periodicals in many parts of the world. Fr. Agnelo’s Tomb in Pilar attracts countless devotees praying for his powerful intercession. The process of beatification is making good but slow progress in Rome. On November 10, 1986 the Process of Life and Virtues was approved by Pope John Paul II and he declared him Venerable. The process on an alleged miracle has been finished at Diocesan level and submitted to the Sacred Congregation in Rome. Frederick, U have summed it all up, beautifully. Goa is 'divided' within itself in so many ways; that 'all Goans' can never unite. [Goanet] Anecdotal examples
Anecdotal (rare) examples is not proof positive. Recently reading some historical writings about Goa, I can across two topics; whose conclusions may represents a pattern. One was a photograph of a circular building which at first is attributed as POSSIBLY being a Jewish synagogue. Soon the conclusion is made that the photograph was proof of an active Jewish community in Goa. Another example was a Syrian Orthodox Cross found at Aggasain, reportedly at the bottom of the river. This artifact is reportedly displayed at the museum in Pillar. This was claimed to be proof of an active Christian community in Goa; prior to the Portuguese. Does a solitary artifact prove the existence of a whole community? Should there not exists lot more artifacts if such a community existed? In the case of the Syrian Orthodox Cross, this object could well be on its way to its final destination with Goa's famous port being the entry or exit harbor. Anecdotal cases make interesting reading, but are generally an exception rather than rule. Because of their exception, the anecdotal observations make interesting reporting and reading. Regards, GL
