[Goanet] Being Ambidextrous

2020-07-15 Thread Roland Francis
India's one and only ambidextrous school.

Students of Veena Vadini School, Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh have this
ambidextrous skill of using both hands with equal power for writing.

This is India's one and only 'ambidextrous' school, which has more than 150
students who write using both hands together at the same time. These students
have a high speed of writing with both hands and most of them can write in six
different languages like Hindi, English, Urdu, Sanskrit, Arabic and Roman.

Because of their ability to write with both hands simultaneously, these
students can finish a three-hour long exam in one or one and half hours.

Whenever a new child comes in, he or she holds the pen with one hand, and they
are taught to use their other hand after a month. After that, the students are
taught to use both the hands together. In 45 minutes of class, every student
practices writing with both hands for 15 minutes.

Only one per cent of the total world population is ambidextrous, according to
an article published in Reader's Digest.

The school is the brainchild of Mr. B.P. Sharma, an ex-army man who was
inspired by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India. Dr. Rajendra
Prasad, Leonardo da Vinci, Ben Franklin and Albert Einstein are some of
history's most famous personalities who share the same skill as that of these
students in India.

[Goanet] Bible verse for the Day

2020-07-15 Thread Devak Argham
Memorial of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Luke 1: 46-55
===

46  And Mary said:  “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;

47 my spirit rejoices in God my savior.

48 For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness; behold, from now on
will all ages call me blessed.

49 The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

50 His mercy is from age to age to those who fear him.

51 He has shown might with his arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and
heart.

52 He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly.

53 The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away
empty.

54 He has helped Israel his servant, remembering his mercy,

55 according to his promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his
descendants forever.”

[Goanet] GOA NEEDS TO BLACKLIST HYDERABAD BASED MVR CONSTRUCTIONS

2020-07-15 Thread Aires Rodrigues
That a 45metre stretch of the under construction highway at Pernem caved in
comes as no surprise while the only saving grace is that there were no
causalities. The very shoddy works of this Hyderabad based MVR
Constructions is on display across Goa. On account of proximity with a
senior Andhra BJP leader, this company is awarded all the major contracts
despite its very substandard works. Infact it is high time such gory
contractors are blacklisted, financially penalized and criminally
prosecuted for not ensuring quality control in their works.

To ensure that every government project is properly and meticulously
executed, Goa desperately needs a full- fledged Quality Control department
that is well equipped to technically and administratively monitor and
ensure strict compliance of all established standards. A
successful project is the one which can achieve a balance between cost,
time, quality and meets the agreed goals of the project. This success can
only be achieved with transparency, accountability and Zero tolerance to
corruption.

It is also imperative that citizens be vigilant about public projects
coming up in their neighborhood as ensuring quality, sustainable
infrastructure with respect for the environment, is everyone's
responsibility. Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of
high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful
execution. There should be no room or excuse for any substandard
construction and a criminal waste of taxpayers’ money.

[Goanet] options for Pilot

2020-07-15 Thread Nelson Lopes

Pilot states that he does not want to join BJP having fought against and won.
Conspiration theory does not seem plausible explanation. High Command wants
Pilot to return as doors are open and sort out issues from within and would
not like to lose him, Party wants to save Congress as many states have fallen
to game plans of BJP .Gelhot has tasted blood and going for kill
Ghelot wants to finish Pilot by disqualification and sacking for anti party
activities , as notices sent out for skipping meetings .He has been sacked as
deputy CM and as Party chief in the state .Two of his supporters are divested
as Ministers These moves are clear signals of strong action to decimate and
humiliate him and make it an impossible an honourable, dignified home coming
Gelhot states he has proof of hobnobbing with BJP. He is clear that Pilot
cannot work anymore and he did not adjust for so long .There were constant
irritation in their functioning as deputy CM. called as differences of opinion
Pilot may form his own outfit to salvage his pride and honour. Could be he
shifted to centre and them shifted after Gelhot tennure is over. Gelhot is
having his say at the moment and Party may not be able to force Pilot on the
the CM.
If Pilot is pushed to the wall
Pilot still can do damage to stability of Govt. can be under a cloud in times
to come .Hence long term view of High Command is to take a realistic view. BJP
is maintaining ring side view and opportune moment to strike

Re: [Goanet] Goa's musicians and bands... remember not to forget them

2020-07-15 Thread Frederick Noronha
A friend, Helene Derkin (now Derkin-Menezes), charmingly narrates her
experience of falling in love with the windsurfing champ Derek Menezes in
Goa, how she encountered the Goan band, and what a dance at Colva was like
in the 1990s. ("From the Outside In," in Inside-Out, Goa,1556 and
GoaWriters 2010). Point of the story: it can be hard work to get cover
versions right too!

QUOTE Then out of the blue, I hear Western music blaring out nearby and
frown in annoyance - don’t want to be reminded of home. I recognise the
song, it’s in the top ten back in the UK. Derrick says the dance must have
started and Fi and I exchange glances – we are sure we’re in for some very
staid and dreary music as we drive up to the venue, but, by the sheer
volume of what’s being played, that is obviously not the case. The dance is
called ‘Noite de Fama’ traditionally held on the day of the Colva church
feast. I walk inside the cloth barrier vowing not to be so judgemental.
What I thought was recorded music is actually a live band called Lynx, we
are astonished – how can a bunch of Goan guys sound exactly like Take That
one minute and Big Mountain the next!

The crowd is throbbing, these Goans are certainly not shy about dancing and
not the foot-shuffling-arms-flinging stuff we know – this is the real deal.
Around us in the most diverse fashion statements, in a rainbow of hues from
saris to puff sleeve ensembles (not the designer labels and street fashion
we were used to seeing), people dance. Partners dance ballroom style, and
dance well – neither of us has ever witnessed anything like this before.
All this is happening under a blanket of a million stars. Back home you
feel like a lottery winner if you can go out in the summer without a coat
on and here we are in the middle of the night revelling in the balmy
weather in our sundresses. It’s a beautiful night, great music, good food,
fine company - great conversation and lots of laughing. We all dance under
those stars.

The sun is just waking up as we get back to Joets. We go back to our room
though I am on too much of a high to sleep, my mind is on the tall dark
handsome man who has swept me off my feet... ‘Oo Baby I Love Your Way’
reverberates in my head as I relive our slow dance together.ENDQUOTE

Hi Fred. Don't beat yourself up over nothing, something that isn't even an
error. So, fuhgeddaboudit, as our gun-slinging Italian-American friends
might have put it in their heyday!
What we should, perhaps, be more exercised about is the embarrassment of
bands that have appeared and disappeared from the Goan English music scene
without leaving the slightest record (!) of their existence in the form of
memorable, original tunes, Remo and Carm (as we now discover) excepting. In
other words, you were inadvertently spot on in suggesting that we should
actually be forgetting them, though not why! Perhaps for their lack of
imagination and creativity? Hehe!
Jokes aside, let's hope the rang-tangists now assembling on Whatsapp keep
the need for some original music at the top of their chit-chat. The way I
see it is, if each band resolves to contribute at least one original song a
year, we should have a decent album to gift each other every year-end. And
these needn't be only in English. Anything in Konkani or English-Konkani
that comes to the level, say, in quality, of the Ketchup Song, or
Despacito, would be welcome, what say?

Re: [Goanet] Goa's musicians and bands... remember not to forget them

2020-07-15 Thread Frederick Noronha
Hi Linken,

As someone who enjoys music, I'm one of those who doesn't believe that
covers versions are in any way inferior to "original" music. By some
coincidence, just today, my friend Simon returned to me a copy of the book
"Theft! A History of Music" (James Boyle and Jennifer Jenkins, 2017). See
https://web.law.duke.edu/musiccomic/ You can read it here.Released under
the Creative Commons.

A self-description: "This comic lays out 2000 years of musical history. A
neglected part of musical history. Again and again there have been attempts
to police music; to restrict borrowing and cultural cross-fertilization.
But music builds on itself. To those who think that mash-ups and sampling
started with YouTube or the DJ’s turntables, it might be shocking to find
that musicians have been borrowingcextensively borrowing --- from each
other since music began. Then why try to stop that process? The reasons
varied. Philosophy, religion, politics, race === again and again, race ---
and law. And because music affects us so deeply, those struggles were
passionate ones. They still are."

We might be shocked to learn how what we take to be original music was
actually a copy of something less well known. At least those creating
covers are honest in what they do and put in their best into it.

The fact of the matter is, "remember not to do something" is a common
expression and one we use regularly in one context or the other. It is when
a word like 'forget' gets appended to it that the intended message takes on
an ambiguity that raises a question in our minds or even means something
opposed to the message intended! Hehe! Good ole Google throws up the
following book titles: Remember Not to Forget: A Memory of the Holocaust,
Stuff I Gotta Remember Not to Forget, Does My Dog Remember Not to Forget Me
When I'm Gone ...
The site, as may be expected, also has pages galore on the grammatical
technicalities of the appropriate use of "not to" or "to not", for anyone
interested in exploring the matter further.
In any case, I know from personal experience that having to write fast does
not make for exactitude in expression. In one recent post here I described
a woman as a 'fellow-tenant', where, actually, 'co-tenant' would have been
more correct.

On July 8, the People’s Archive of Rural India (PARI) – established by P.
Sainath in 2013 as “living journal and archive” - posted an unusual short
video from Odisha on social media.

Under two minutes, it introduced Dule Rocker, a young man with intense
kohl-lined eyes, in an obviously ramshackle rural setting. He gathers
himself as a spare, catchy backing track kicks in. Then, mind-bendingly
shocking, he explodes into controlled fury, rapping in full flow with
tremendous assurance, “*Sarkar, jabab de, jabab de*” (subtitled as
“Government, answer this. Oh government, answer this”).

It was an electrifying debut. The next day, singer/composer Vishal Dadlani,
who judged Indian Idol from 2013-19, tweeted “This is incredible!
@DuleRocker, if you need help producing/recording/releasing your music, get
in touch. I’ll do what I can. I’m sure we all will…check this fire out!”

I follow PARI on Twitter, and viewed Dule Rocker’s video soon after it was
posted. It hooked me immediately (a week later, the refrain still plays in
my head) but also triggered insistent flashbacks to the 1980s, and my
teenage years playing basketball on public courts in New York City, which
constantly reverberated with the birth of the rap genre (also known as
hip-hop).

Back then, when mainstream media in the USA was still largely segregated,
Chuck D of the all-time-great rappers Public Enemy famously called the new
music form “Black CNN.” This came rushing back to me when I tracked down
more Dule Rocker videos as realization set in that my initial instincts
were justified. The fates have conspired to deliver India a genuinely great
rapper of the old school, urgently communicating breaking news from parts
of the country so little known they could be on another continent.

“Poverty is my companion,” 27-year-old Duleshwar Tandi told me when I
manged to call him at home in the village of Borda, in the Kalahandi
district of western Odisha, “but at least I am lucky to have my mobile
phone. It makes some things possible. But everything else in my life is
just another reminder that I am poor.”

The unlikely happenstance of Dule Rocker becomes truly dramatic when you
zoom out to understand its context. His home district is amongst the
poorest in India, literally synonymous with destitution. “Kalahandi
Syndrome” says Wikipedia “[is] associated with backwardness and
starvation.” There are no jobs. Tandi is fluent in four languages (he spoke
to me in easy English, peppered with “bro” and “man”), and earned a BSc,
but before lockdown he was cleaning tables for Rs. 3000 per month in
Raipur, across the border in Chhattisgarh.

Purusottam Thakur, the PARI Fellow who first noticed Dule Rocker and
brought him to national attention, grew up 20 kilometres from Borda. He
told me “I have witnessed drought, starvation, child sale, deaths from
hunger, and constant waves of migration.” Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi,
Narasimha Rao and Deve Gowda have all visited “when the situation was
worst.” Today social security alleviates some desperation, but “migration
is continuing.”

*Oh government! Answer this!Answer this! Why is the pregnant woman
returning,Walking thousands of kilometresStep by step, barefootWith a baby
in her womb?*

Immediately after prime minister Narendra Modi announced “the world’s
strictest lockdown” on March 24, it became clear his administration had
failed to consider its implications for millions of migrant workers
(estimates range up to 130 million), especially the 85% of the labour force
employed in the informal sector. Accurately surmising things would only get
worse, huge numbers of these citizens – the backbone of India’s growth
story - took to their feet in the absence of conveyance, and streamed on
the highways to try and reach home.

We have seen an extraordinary barrage of images reminiscent of Partition in
1947. The little boy passed out on a suitcase being dragged by his mother.
The teenaged girl cycling 1200 kilometres with her injured father on the
pillion. These have been gruelling months of helplessness, frustration and
tears, and now here’s Dule Rocker to voice the refrain that fits perfectly
on everyone’s lips. Sarkar, jabab de, jabab de, yes indeed.

There are so many singular aspects to the young rapper’s emergence, that it
beggars the imagination. For instance, he raps in Kalahandia, one variant
of Kosali. I’d never even heard of the language, but it turns out to have
20 million speakers, and a strong case to be included in the 8th Schedule
of the Constitution as an official language of India. One of its leading
authors and activists, Saket Sreebhushan Sahu told me, “Kosali is the
dominant means of communication in western

[Goanet] THE PRIORITY NOW IS A COVID HOSPITAL AND NOT AN IIT AT SATTARI

2020-07-15 Thread Aires Rodrigues
With Goa witnessing a rapid surge in COVID-19 cases and an increasing
number of deaths, the government’s one and only priority must be to deal
with the raging pandemic. After all, the most basic duty of any Government
is to protect the lives of its citizens.

Given the worsening health and economic situation, it is imperative that
all pending and proposed projects must be put on hold and the unending
greed of the ruling politicians must end too. The Health of our citizens
must be uppermost and the only priority for the Government. This means that
all non-essential projects even the needless Manohar Parrikar’s memorial at
Miramar should be consigned to the racks. This is a critical time for us
to tighten our economic belt and use all our limited resources to focus on
fighting the virus, saving lives and helping the vulnerable instead of
irresponsibly wasting taxpayers’ money on vanity projects for the benefit
of a few instead of the many.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane should get his act together and get the
priorities right. A COVID hospital in Sattari and not an IIT is the need of
the hour. It would also facilitate the hordes of the Health Minister’s
flock that have to currently travel from Sattari all the way to the Goa
Medical College at Bambolim for their gainful employment.

With the COVID crisis in the State aggravating by the day, the government
must get its very slack act together and gear up for the long haul. We are
today paying a heavy price for the wrong decisions, misplaced priorities,
lack of leadership and planning by this visionless government.

Over the last crucial few months Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Health
Minister Vishwajit Rane have miserably abdicated in their duty by their
flip flops in dealing with the deadly virus. For this Goa and Goans will
not forgive their sheer incompetence in these crucial times.

The battle against COVID-19 cannot and should never have been allowed to be
a BJP political affair. A national crisis of this magnitude should have
seen a concerted and determined cross-party effort following the science
and advice from experts and involving every Goan to contain and combat the
virus with transparency and genuine leadership and planning.

Any government who fails to carry out its most basic duty to defend the
lives of its citizens is unworthy to lead. Thomas Jefferson, the third
President of the United States wisely observed; “The care of human live and
happiness and not their destruction, is the first and only object of any
good Government”.
