That’s what life is all about. Succinctly expressed by a pretty Singaporean
saleswoman when I told her the shirt she was selling me was much lesser in
price than the same one I bought somewhere else.

But this time I am referring to food, specifically pork, not clothes.

In Amboli, Bombay once, it was plentiful. East Indian families would slaughter
their yard-bred animals often, spread the word in the village and sell you
whatever cuts you wanted. Tasty porkies, who knows what they were fed.

If you wanted a leitão, you had only to make a weekend trip to Mount Poinsur,
Borivali and buy the little fellows from the priests and families that bred and
sold them there. 100 bucks for a ten pounder, circa 1970.

Then I went to the Gulf. Initially there was as much pork as you wanted, coming
from Denmark and England. Well packed, presented and sold in the chiller aisles
of big supermarkets. Then all of a sudden the Emir became sanctimonious
(perhaps his new found friendship with the Saudi king made it imperative) and
notice was given that no pork would be sold in Qatar. Those were great days.
The sellers had to get rid of their stock quickly and we had a ball. Towards
the end, good pork was almost given away. After that it was famine for pork.
The only way you could get it was bringing it back from your India trip and
sneaking it past the Doha customs or meet a Filipino seaman from a ship
touching the port who smuggled and sold it to you. The Qatari custom officers
were good then. Depending on their mood, if they knew you were Christian and
carrying a modest amount, they would either wink and let you go or throw it in
a special bin as if for confiscation and when things were quieter, make their
Indian helpers empty the binned pork into the trunk of their Mercedes cars.

Then when I came to Canada, it was back from feast to famine to feast again.
Ontario pork, although not as fine as Goan pork once in taste, was hygienic,
succulent and pleasing to the eye. All at a very good price. The Chinese went
one step further. They sold you all you needed for sorpotel - blood, lungs,
liver, heart. Not to mention brain and tongue.

A similar tale played out, though in dissimilar sequence, with fresh  fish and
shrimp. Feasts in Bombay, Goa and Qatar, but famine in Toronto. We do get all
the fish you may want here, but none of it is fresh, all frozen or farmed.

I share Bernice’s experience with Goa’s humble bhajjia. She described it
right: humble. But humble is often outstanding in taste and this was one
example.

Just outside Loutulim’s Salvador do Mundo Church, was a poor Goan peasant
sitting by the side of the road on a small mat while his wife fried the bajjias
in a little hut just behind him. The small brown balls were heavenly, hot and
tangy but not spicy, crisp but not hard. An indescribable taste really.

Most people, Loutulim Bamons if I may say so, passed him by but not me and a
few like me. Living in Bombay, appearances meant little,  taste a lot. My
palate was jaded with all the different wonderful kind of bhajjias made by
Gujaratis, Bhayyas and South Indians but the Goa bhajjia beat them all. No
potato, no chana, no chilli, no peas, nothing. To this day I don’t know what
they put in it. All I remember is how they tasted.

Do you gave the guy your four annas or eight annas or even may be a rupee and
in return you got a newspaper rolled into a cone which despite all the deep
fried stuff inside, betrayed not a spot of oil in the wrapping. It was enough
not only to fill me but enough to take home for the others.

More and more I understand the saying; enjoy the little things for before you
know it, they will become the big things.

The Goa bhajjia certainly did for Bernice and for me.

Nelson you are completely right in what you say, but there is no need to feel
helpless and sad at one’s situation. Here are a few ways you can combat it.

1. Stopping running around to fulfill your children’s family needs. No
babysitting (you have long completed that part), no doing their odd jobs
because they do full time jobs and think you have time on your hands.

2. Get out of the house daily on any pretext and meet for breakfast or
otherwise with a group of same age, like minded spirited friends who like to
have a laugh and don’t relapse too much into their medical problems.

3. Go for every event you can. With your wife if she wants to, alone if you
have to. Church feasts, cultural events, musical shows, village celebrations
are all fair game. Do the small things you wanted to do for which you never had
the time.

4. You have an in-hand voluntary project in P.C. Trust. Take it in new
directions, bring in young volunteers and scholarship beneficiaries to do the
physical work. You concentrate on the new creative ideas, delegation and
direction.

These activities will dispel all your feelings of being made to feel redundant,
unneeded and will bolster your self esteem.

also a composer and one of the top musician in Goa. We started playing in
1950s for various weddings clubs and Emissora de Goa.
My team leader at present is having a top band in Canada because he had

leaders and surprisingly how our band missed appearing in Goanet.
We were playing in most of the famous club in Goa. Also for Cabaret,
weddings, Carnival and for parties.
Santimano is right and I am not wrong the family used to stay down the
Corte de Oiteiro road.
I am sure some few bands also not been listed.
I remember their names of the band but let them bring to the notice of
Goanet. ( Frederick).

I would like to bring to your attention that there was a family band =
parents + 8 children who used to perform in the Panjim gardens, mando

SANTIMANO FAMILY BAND.

May be the old timers have heard about this famous family band in the mid

While discarding the ground reality, what do Manohar Parrikar’s remaining

Coconut Water Good For Your Daughter!

While a young lad growing up in Bangalore I would often hear this
refrain: Coconut water is good for your daughter, Nilgiri buns good
for you sons!

The sons of south India today are more into computers than buns, as
Bangalore and other parts in the south are firmly in the 21st century,
and the girls, too,  are not particularly interested in coconuts -
tender or otherwise.

Muthalik is of the opinion Bangalore girls would rather have a
cocktail than anything else; and, of course, he does not approve of
this kind of behavior. But how about a coconut fenny cocktail?

Goans have given the coconut tree a special place in our hearts  - a
resurrection from a no-tree status by a few misguided people. Anyway,
why not make the coconut cocktail the official cocktail of Goa? Life,
they say, goes on and things change, and maybe it is time to drink to
that!

Our Agriculture Minister Vijay Sardesai has announced the promotion of
tender coconuts in a big way for Goa. In some countries, there are
soft drinks available which contain vitamins, especially vitamins c,
fiber, and other goodies. We can promote the coconut tree, especially
the tender coconut water everywhere in Goa. A nice touch in the land
of Goenkarponn. An antidote to combat aerated drinks which we all know
does not promote good health, only diabetes. Let's raise a glass to
our Agriculture Minister for his positive and creative thinking, a
quality always in short supply in Goa.

Coconut Corner can become a place of honor in every village market in
Goa where coconuts - tender and ripe - can be sold along with sweets
and other coconut delicacies, including coconut artifacts, anything
related to the tree and fruit. No way should increased FAR be given to
builders if they grow coconut trees. Why single out the builders for
special privileges, the logic of which escapes every bona fide Goenkar
except a bondo. Somehow every politician in Goa wants to bring in the
builder through the backdoor. Beware! Next our IT Parks soon will have
more coconut trees than a coconut grove.

Goa's coconut culture is in the limelight, and fast forward. It looks
like the Goa Forward Party is on the right foot and taking our state
in the right direction - on this issue.

On other issues, I reserve my opinion. A step forward is good; please,
however, don't take two steps backward after this!

[Goanet] Portuguese passport for Goans and Property Rules in Goa

 Dear All,
Can anyone advise ...
For Females Is maiden surname or your married change of surname is
legal.. For acquiring a portuguese passport with mother's details provided
the surname of the Mother has to be her maiden surname
What about the existing properties, Voting Card, Ration Card, Adhar Card, Bank
Accounts  etc.. that she hold under her husband's surname..?
This has to be regularised in Goa..
There should be no surname changed right ?
Welcome for comments... This subj. will help many of our Goans...

ENTER IMRAM KHAN

New P.M of Pakistan has been sworn in . Whether it bodes well for India
time alone will tell, notwithstanding the invitation to  India. May be
cricket diplomacy like pink pong earlier may be attempted. His role as a
captain, bowler, batsman may provide the spark if resumed, Cricket is like
a emotional, passionate war of sorts between the neighbours ,substitute for
physical engagement  In the past too attempts have been made by all sides
for rapprochement without much  success

The people of Pakistan invest in democracy with a hope, expectations and
aspiration for change of order for better. The civilian Govts have suffered
the same disease of maneuvering by military establishment from behind. Ms
Bhuto blowing hot and cold was eliminated by design not by accident as it
appears to be. Musharaf too made news wearing a mask of peace and waging
the infamous Kargil war .The actions of Sharif alienated the establishment,
who tried to put a spork in is wheel of developing cordial relations The
war cries and bugles is favourite diet of military to keep in them in the
reckoning .No one dares to rub them on the wrong sides. Musharaf is in
exile with all his patriotic flavor having the taste of his own medicine he
administered to his predecessor Since the military establishment cannot
dislodge the democratic Govt by a coup, they embroil their unamenable
leaders in the cauldron of soup of economic offences Military coup will
lead to crippling economic sanctions that will not be to the advantage of
military bosses and that is why they thread a beaten path. Already winds of
allegations of corruption are blowing against the new incumbent, meant to
send a subtle warning. The civilian Govt is always check mated for trying
to pursue a liberal approach towards India and must receive tacit approval
of military establishment, hence the democratic Govt in Pakistan is
constantly under a strain to please the military. The military is pursuing
a low intensity war of terrorism bleeding India with non-state actors,
jihadi groups and terrorist training camps on its soil  with denial mode
as its strategy

The one solution that could reign in peace is the suggestion that LOC be
converted into International border. Both sides give up their hardened
stand to re occupy the positions held as present. Improvement of trade,
exchange of visitors person to person contact, stopping export of cross
border terrorism with military support and reigning in the jihadi groups
can at least bring about thaw in hostile relations The threat of nuclear
war is a bogey that will have consequences for warring groups with economic
disaster for already a ruined economy of Pakistan, The cold war bitterness
between Russia, China, USA for strategic foothold in the region is no more
the avowed purpose and Pakistan no more holds its cards The Afghanistan
issue is no more the bone of contention to give Pakistan  aid, which has
been misused

Imran Khan as the new P.M carries the weight on his shoulders .He has to
please the military establishment , not alienate the powerful Jihadi groups
nurtured and cultivated by military and fulfill the aspiration of people
who have put him in the

Flaming Oranje and Panjim Dolphins play out thrilling draw

CUNCOLIM: Flaming Oranje and Panjim Dolphins played out a 0-0 draw in
the Vedanta Women?s league game organised by Goa Football Association
played at Cuncolim ground on Sunday.
Panjim Dolphins came into the game as strong contenders having won all
their group matches so far. While, Flaming Oranje looked to take away
all three points after a draw in the previous encounter against Goa
Velha Saints.
The game was an exciting one with goal mouth action at both ends, but it
was the hard work from the end lines of both teams which cancelled out
each other?s opportunities. Panjim Dolphins having a strong side came
out with numerous attacks onto the Oranje defence but failed to find the
winning strike. Both teams had to settle it out as they shared points
and Panjim Dolphins sit comfortably at the top of the table with 10
points and just one more final round to go.

[Goanet] Clergy Home at Porvorim

2011-01-23 Thread W.F.

Dear All Goans,

I think Goans can do alot for the Clergy Home for our retured priests...
like I did..when I inaugurated my new house I didnt not have the
traditonal jevon called the Bikareachem Jevon at my place, what I did
was prepared good lunch at ma home and went to the Clery Home at
Porvorim and the old priests living there really enjoyed the lunch given
to them. Also a lumpsum amount was given for the upkeep of the Clery Home...

So, I suggest that every Goan can do their bit and help to maintain this
Clery Home in a nice way.

Cheers !!!

2008-05-13 Thread W.F.

Dear All,

I was reading a msg. from Stephen Fernandes on the goanet and I think if
Indian Airlines think that they do not have enough passengers to Goa direc
then they can go via Muscat since UAE is closer to Muscat and help the Goans
out there as well...

I am having a doubt on IC ..they will start now and sudennly they will stop
this flight due to less passengers..hope they set a reasonable rate for
this..

Dear All,

Can we all Goans come together and request for direct flights from the Gulf
which have been stopped...due to less passengers..We can suggest that the
flight can go via Abu Dhabi/ Sharjah/ Kuwait/ Bahrain/ Qatar from Dubai...(any
one via sectors) and I thik that could help the airline get more direct
passengers to Goa and return back.

Air India operates flights to Bangalore..i.e. Dubai/ Bangalore/Bombay and
return Bombay/Bangalore/Dubai...

  Have your say and support..

If Goans will get jobs in Goa then this will be a very good idea..and all

  Hey!

I absolutely agree with you. They just come to Gulf for a good vacation.

Thank you for bringing it up - it is indeed a very grave issue. But can we do
something about it?

The politicians in Goa have to do something for the people in Goa - Look at
the low salary a Goan executive gets. It is sometimes lower then a housemaid
in Gulf . But if a non-Goan or European is employed in Goa, he will get a
salary 20 times higher and lots of allowances.

The salaries in the private sector in Goa have to be screened by the
Government so that there is an end to exploitation of Goan private sector
employees.

My maid is qualified up till - HSSC a beauticians She was working as a
sales girl for a while then she was a beautician. But, she came here to work
here as a maid, though she had a job in Goa, her salary was less then half of
what I pay her here. This is just one small example. There are so many Goans
lost here like her - just because the Government does not look at the private
sector employees.
The private Employer in Goa will keep sucking their employees till this issue
is taken up by some one.

The corporate guys in goa like Salgaonkar / Dempo / CMM / chowgule - have the
best comforts at the cost of these poor people - who need to get something
better in return for their sweat.
There is a good scale only for Government Sector. Due to the Rane's rule
for more than 15 years, every government office / institution you go - you will
see only people from Sattari / Sanguem / Valpoi.

When I go to Goa - it is a sad sight to see well qualified people either
jobless or working for peanuts - as there is no scale set for private sector
jobs.

We should talk about the living conditions of our people then politics and
language.

I never see the issue of private sector wages / wage scale raised. Can
somebody do something about this issue through this forum so that we can help
our people back in Goa?

I hope someone in this group will find this issue worth an excavation
followed by a serious thought.

  MARIA
