[Goanet] Opinion poll blast
Opinion poll The importance coming after 51 years is welcome. The congress had all the time to give due importance, Now they boycott the show or some support statue and want recognition It is disgusting that speak for opinion poll now after they are out of power Those that were for merger and worked for it enjoyed the power, position and privileges and the anger of people should have booted them out long ago They thrived and prospered a la judas, GFP IS DEFINITELY AIMING TO MOVING THEIR PARTY FORWARD, Circumstances have provided the GFP with an opportunity to galvanize Goans, The BJP is in catch 22 situation. Opposing will result in avoidable back lash and supporting will send signal of impotency, antagonize coalition parterres and even lead to collapse of Govt in power. What better option then to avoid back breaking moments then to surrender to imagined back pain, Bravo, for wriggling out of situation before hearing the threat to revolt and pass a motion of stalling statue of father of opinion poll MGP, even though they have changed the prefix M, the leopard cannot change its spots how true. What guts they display to utter that Goan identity is maintained The margin of win was provided by the south voters as statistics will show Stalwarts of merger under the banner of MGP migrated to Congress for pelf and privileges of the ruling party and since then made hay while the sun shines Those that enjoyed power, position and perks should have owed their allegiance at least to those who voted for separate identity, No thought was veer given to this aspect, The question of separate status was dangling a carrot, The formation of state and recognition to the language took ages and violent agitations Congress need to hang their head in shame, simply mouthing platitudes that opinion poll was sanctioned by Congress Govt. What if the referendum was lost? Did it provide alternative remedy, because such a referendum was the only one so far in Independent India In fact Loyola preferred an appeal against referendum not maintainable under constitution, irrespective of its outcome It goes tO the credit of GFP to have brought the issue under the focus of search lights of Goan identity Keep it up, even if it is apolitical gamble/ gimmick, as GFP was not existing then nor does their manifesto gave any hint to latch on to the opinion poll issue Congress is bereft off any face saving device The NAMES ANNOUNCED ARE CREDIBLE Nelson Lopes Chinchinim

[Goanet] OPINION POLL – A LOLLIPOP OSMITAI CELEBRATION
The very belated move by the Goa Government to celebrate the January 16th Opinion Poll day is yet another political stunt that will fool no self-respecting Goan. This theatrical move has been orchestrated by the Goa Forward Party to try in vain to deflect people’s attention from the credibility crisis the party is facing across Goa. Dr Jack de Sequeira, the Father of that Opinion Poll as the then fiery voice of the Opposition toiled with a vision and passion towards the development of Goa. Unlike many of today’s politicians who are self-centered, he relentlessly raised and pursued issues concerning the backward, down-trodden, and neglected communities of Goa. A Leader of his integrity, honesty and commitment, we may now never see in this arena of political pygmies. Dr Jack de Sequeira always dared to speak from his heart and always walked the talk. Only a few of such politicians still remain in our midst and will also be always remembered for the good they have done for Goa. About the rest and in particularly some of the current politicians in power who have been steering and navigating Goa down the tube there will be no obituary to write and no land remaining to even raise a Samadhi, leave alone a statue. As a school student I had the privilege of interacting with Dr Jack de Sequeira and with nostalgic feelimgs of witnessing his worthy debates in the Legislative Assembly, always well prepared and ever so eloquent. Later in 1977 after that State of Emergency I had the occasion of addressing many public meetings along with that great and inspiring leader. The January 16th 1967 Opinion Poll was historic but successive governments have miserably failed to take concrete steps to preserve the Goan identity for posterity. The levels of corruption, nepotism and bad governance has never been as bad as what we have witnessed over the last six years with the merciless rampant destruction and devastation of Goa. Instead of preserving Goa’s unique culture, the Goa government's flawed policies has reduced the local population to a minority thus diluting the linguistic and cultural identity of Goa. A once peaceful and serene Goa has today sadly become a drug, gambling, prostitution and crime destination. Dr Jack de Sequeira must be rolling in his grave seeing the pathetic state of a sinking Goa where after having heartlessly destroyed the hills and fields we have reached a desperate point of having to even import Coconuts from Sri Lanka. Sorrowing lies our Goa with our Osmitai (identity) long faded away. The above post brought me a lot of memories. First our time in the St. Xavier's college in Bastora, and the "hydra" teacher besides those who came from ex-Chowgule college (I think there were five of you guys). You "outshone" all of them. :) I was in Mumbai (Bombay) during the Opinion Poll - working as a temporary clerk in Voltas limited and we were boarded in Sodality House in Byculle. Three of us Goans decided to come down, we could not find land transport and we took a ship to Mormugao and came to our dear Goa. We left mv Sarita and saw the crackers and flashes we had Goa was "saved" The three were: Fernando D'Abreu Noronha, Amaranto de Souza and me. All of us BoB's (Brittos old boys) the company I was working (Voltas Ltd) sacked me, as they would not give me a leave. When I returned with JOY, that we had "won" it did not bother much at the loss of the job. It was worth the effort. We got many to vote. My late dad, was the "carcereiro" (jailor) in Mapusa, and Padre Chico Monteiro was my dad's "guest of honour," he had his room where my dear Pai lived, and his food was our humble, fish curry and rice with a good "recheado" mackrell my good mother Dona Estefania was specialist in this. Those days we lived in Corlim (now Khorli) all of us studied in St. Brittos except for my sister who was a "green chilly" and right now like yours truly she is a "red chilly" and me turned a pickeled "mango" - now and age is catching up. I thought I would pen this, asking my good friend Rico to edit it ! Those were the days, politics is disgusting, one does not know who is your friend or foe, but the simply secret is that we put the mind of Christ, and treat others how they would like to be understood. Jesus did not look at Peter and Judas with hate, rather as his friends. Peter also betrayed Jesus, and that too three times and the latter looked at Pedro with compassion rather than condemnation. That broke the Apostle down as he wept bitterly. Thankfully, Goa is not wiped off the map, the Opinion Poll still holds on and we are not yet eaten as batawadas by Delhiwallas. As for the low turn out to commemorate the historic event the cause lies with the adults who at that period did not emphasise the importance of the event. The story of the OP was never told in schools, so generations do not have a clue about this date. Besides those who voted for the merger should leave Goa for elsewhere. The communal divide is hurting Goa. BC

Comments : Camilo Fernandes In response to JoeGoaUK's below post. It is shameful that Goans seem to have forgotten the founder of Goa state, Dr. Jack De Sequeira. As JoeGoaUK rightly says "We say Goem amchem but where is everybody? He adds "they were expecting atleast 100 people4 to turn up it being a Sunday as well" I feel on this auspicious day, sincere lovers of Goa should have been present in large numbers to pay homage to Dr. Jack De Sequeira one of the best leaders Goa has had. Goans seem more interested in only talking but no action. Some believe more in criticising and putting obstacles to Goans who are taking up the lead for a better Goa. Truly at this rate the future of Goa is indeed bleak. Kudos to all those who turned up to pay their respects to the founder of Goa state. Re: [Goanet] Opinion Poll day: 'Osmitai Dis' in Goa
From: "Francisco Floriano Fernandes" On the 45th year of the Opinon Poll day Goa is coorating the day as the "Osmitai Dis" in different parts of Goa... ...Being the founder member of the above (GKBSKSK) association we have started to commemorate this day as the Osmitai Dis just because our Goa Govt. is not ready to commemorate this day as many of our ministers were from the MGP who was pro-mergerist. Had it not been Dr. Jack de Sequeira Goa would have been a part of Maharastra and this programmes signifies the work done by our past leader Dr.Jack de Sequiera and his followers to save the Identity of Goa. **This is an important day, as we have seminally saved our "Goan Identity". Otherwise, we would have been lost in the belly of another Big State. Politicians are self-seeking. The true "Freedom Fighters" should fight now for saving continually our "Goan Identity" from the threats of the greedy politicians and industrialists... Let better sense prevail! Regards. Fr.Ivo
[Goanet] Opinion Poll that kept Goa Separate (16th Jan 1967)
The Opinion Poll held on 16th Jan 1967 saved Goa from Merger into Maharashtra. Most Goans surely are happy today, that Goa remained a separate state with a separate identity; but will this identity remain, or will it be extinguished in the near future. Will the efforts of all those who fought to save Goa from merger go in vain? Today Goa's Identity is under threat from (1) Corrupt Politicians, (2) Mega-Projects, (3) Land Sharks & Rich Non-Goansindiscrimatelybuying up Goa; with practically no land available for Goans today, (4) Uncontrolled Migrant Influx, slums & vote banks being used to checkmate Goans, (5) Konkani losing prominence against other languages (6) Government in-difference to so many Goans leaving Goa, due to lack of employment opportunities and if action is not taken, Goans will soon be a minority in their own state. It is time for another movement to re-visit what Goans had actually voted for in 1967; its time for Goans today to rise from their slumber; to speak/act in one voice that Goa is not for SALE and Goans have a right to protect their identify, land and our way of life. Yes, the Indian Constitution has a lot of good points but this legal document has its serious flaws if it assists, in decimation of any states local identity; needless to say, Goans were never party to the process of forming the Constitution; so it is high time that views are now taken into consideration!! [Goanet] Opinion Poll of Goa - A perspective.

In the course of the current discussions on the Freedom Fighters, I was quite surprised to read that the credit of the victory of the Opinion Poll of Goa is being given Dr. Jack de Sequeira alone. In this connection, I would like to shed some light on the real situation that prevailed during the historic Opinion Poll and who were the real ‘unsung heroes’ who deserve more credit than anyone else. The untold story goes somewhat like this: The Opinion Poll to maintain the status of Goa was fought by all the 12 Opposition Party M.L.A.s, who were elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Union Territory of Goa, Daman & Diu, for the term 1963-68. Each of the 12 M.L.A.s named below played a vital role in ensuring the victory of the Opinion Poll. They are: Dr. Jack de Sequeira, Panjim; Mr. J.L.J. Araujo, St. Cruz; Mr. J.M. D’Souza, Calangute; Mr. Valente Sequeira, Aldona; Mr. Teotonio Pereira, St. Andre; Dr. Luis Proto Barbosa, Cortalim; Smt. Urminda Lima Leitao, Murmagao; Dr. Marelio Furtado, Benaulim; Mr. Vasudev Salmarkar, Margao; Mr. Enio Pimenta, Curtorim; Dr. Alvaro Loyola Furtado, Navelim; Mr. Sebastiao Mazrello, Cuncolim. Apart from the 12 United Goans (Sequeira & Furtado Groups) M.L.A.s of that time, a large number of genuine Goan Leaders, other than those associated with the Maharashtra Gomantak Party, Renowned Tiatrists, Press Personnel, Industrialists, Businessmen & Common men/women, joined forces to fight the historic Opinion Poll, under the banner of Anti-Merger Front, and worked tirelessly to ensure that the status of Goa remained intact, along with Daman & Diu, as it’s integral parts. In my honest opinion, it is very unfair and unjust to single out, Dr. Jack de Sequeira, as the architect of the Opinion Poll and attribute the victory to him. He has played the role just as every other Goan has played. No doubt, he was one of the many who deserved the credit for the historic landslide victory, but the fact remains that the victory was, mainly due to the huge differences in votes polled in the constituencies of South Goa. No single leader could have ever saved Goa from merger, had it not been for the over whelming support of the people of Goa. Let is be clearly understood that it was purely a victory of the PEOPLE of GOA and no one else needs to be given credit for the same. It is the true GOANS who saved GOA! Long Live Goa and Goans!! Dears, There are some things that NRI Goans or NRGs can do. 1. Forward [scan and forward , if hard copy] any promos from builders for bungalows or "gated colonies" in Goa to the netgroups and individuals/organisations in Goa. 2. Divide your family property amicably and appropriately. Do not sell it becuse your egos will not let you give your share to your brother or brother-in-law at a reasonable price. 3. Divide your wealth among your children in your lifetime. My grandfather divided his inheritance and acquisitions on the death of his wife ...when my father was just six years old! there are laws that guarantee usufruct. In any case the best laws cannot prevent your children from dumping you in a "home for the aged" as you will be too old to survive a long drawn court case ...that may not even be settled in your life time. There is no substitute for good upbringing. Foreign education for one's children is more often a liability than an asset. 4. Have a good word for your neighbour who is fighting the builders lobby. Money is not everything. 5. If the movement needs money, give appropriately, not excessively. 6. Do not preach, suggest with humility. It is the man, woman or child in the street who bears the brunt [In Colomb the other day, a truck driver dropped his pants and threatened to rape the women picketing the mining trucks. It is not funny. Many builders employ "Bouncers" to keep off nosey villagers]. Their sacrifice cannot be compensated by your donation. Just put yourself in their place and put a value to it. If it is cheaper for you to do it, come and do it yourself! 7. Encourgae your friends and relatives in Goa to participate. This is a REFERANDUM. Make no mistake about that. it is either the Gram Sabha or the "Developer" that will be supreme. Most of the politicians, from the Panchayat to the top, are already a part of the "Development" nexus. 8. All people are not saints. There is no saint without a past and no sinner without a future. Judge the present actions, take precautions against a repetition of the past. "Trust no Future, however pleasant, Let the dead Past bury its dead. Act, act in the living Present, Heart within and God o'erhead." That is what H.W. Longfellow wrote long time ago. If is the eternal truth. If the current rate on migration & land sales are not controlled, Goa will no longer be with Goans. The Congress Government clearly intends to Globalise Goa; and is conveniently ignoring the fact that we can be Global, with a local perspective; as being done in other globalised communities around the world. I suspect that they don't want to upset their High Command in Delhi; and prefer to ignore the people who they are supposed to represent/support in the first place. It is now or never for Goa.
