While my 80+% SeaSonic runs cooler than the ~65-70% supply it replaced, it still doesn't run _cool_. There is still a lot of power being dissipated as heat. The real advantage, as you point out, is that the SeaSonic units (at least the M12) deliver rated power at 40C, and 80% at 50C. While I agree that a 500W quality power supply is sufficient for his single-GPU machine, I advocate buying more capacity than needed now to allow for expansion in the future. While C2D stunted CPU power demand for a while, the addition of multiple cores is causing that demand to increase once again. GPU power consumption is in near runaway mode. Even chipsets are starting to pull a not-insignificant amount of power. Of course, my PSU strategy is to have the supply last through several machine builds...so if you have different objectives in that regard, sizing should change accordingly. Fact: At full load, current quad-core CPUs can pull upwards of 150 watts. (C2Q QX6800 rated at 130W TDP, and TDP isn't max) Fact: At full load, current high-end GPUs pull upwards of 220 watts or more. Fact: 680i/X38 are looking at power consumption of 30+ watts You're already at 400 watts. Add conversion inefficiencies, 4 sticks of high-end memory, 4 or 5 hard drives, several fans, and other motherboard/system components, and you're easily at 500W+ under a full load condition. How much margin are you comfortable with? Greg

RE: [H] Looking for advice on new system.
For gaming, I'd go E6850. More speed per core is almost universally better than more cores for current games. I anticipate that will change, but it'll remain that way for a while. Hands down, P35 Express, unless you just absolutely need SLI. The 680i has a fantastic feature set, but I've just generally had bad luck with itnetwork adapters that are either slow or disappear and require a reboot, general instability after running for a few months, high temperatures (not just NB, the SB runs blazing hot too), immature drivers/BIOS (these have largely been worked out on the BIOS side, but c'mon), poor quad-core overclockability, very finicky memory controller, etc. Greg -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:hardware- [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Michael Decker Sent: Monday, July 16, 2007 1:48 PM To: The Hardware List Subject: Re: [H] Looking for advice on new system. P35 is the only way to go. It has ICH9 which is the fastest southbridge to date. In addition to DDR3 support, it's memory controller has been tweaked to surpass the performance of older chipsets even when using DDR2. SLI is still immeasurably stupid. 8800 GTX's and Ultras are cheaper now and the prices keep falling. Re: [H] Looking for advice on new system.
SLI is pointless to consider unless you have money to burn (better to get a Roth IRA IMHO). A 550 watt PSU with greater than 80% efficiency would do just fine for what you want. Apparently my fellow listers haven't been reading too much about P35 and DDR2/DDR3 support. P35 is an excellent chipset but only slightly superior in performance to 965 with current DDR3 sticks. Second, the pin count between DDR2 and DDR3 while being exactly the same have a different notch. Therefore, you either buy a mobo that takes DDR2 memory knowing that you can never upgrade it in the future to DDR3 or you buy a DDR3 mobo knowing that you can't use DDR2 and will pay a serious price penalty for it. Finally, it seems that Kingston and not Crucial makes the fastest DDR3 memory @ the present time. Dude, P35 will not give you any future proofing unless you bite the bullet and get a mobo with DDR3 memory slots. So, how much money you can afford to spend is the most relevant question @ this point. Oh yeah, most reviews have Gigabyte mobo's rated best for Intel CPU's. In addition to DDR3 support, it's memory controller has been tweaked to surpass the performance of older chipsets even when using DDR2. SLI is still immeasurably stupid. 8800 GTX's and Ultras are cheaper now and the prices keep falling. Yeah I'd rather run one video card. Esp, where one card can ruin two in SLI. So looks like so far we have: P35 Express chipset board E6850 (3.0GHz) dual-core DDR3 Memory 8800 GTX or Ultra nVidia card Anyone make a call on what brand I would pursue for P35 chipset? I would probably take crucial memory since I am setup as a reseller. Who makes decent nVidia cards nowadays? I am using a MSI @ the moment. Antec PSU? Wattage?
RE: [H] Looking for advice on new system.
With the Intel quad-core Q6600 (2.4GHz) hitting $266 next week (7/22), and the new E6850 (3.0GHz) dual-core running at $266 now, along with the rather nice P35 Express chipset, why would anyone even consider an AMD-based machine for anything but an ultra-budget box? But to answer your question...now is a pretty decent time to buy. If you're dead set on AMD, they just slashed prices---the X2 6000+ can be found for only $170. The next gen core, Phenom, is rumored to be delayed for until Q1 2008. (Barcelona-based Opterons will ship this year, but current rumor is the Phenom desktop chips won't.) Intel has just released the 1333MHz bus chips, and a huge price cut on existing chips is set for the 22nd...they will push out 45nm chips later this year, but I don't think they're reason enough to wait. Not sure if now is a good time to build a new game system or not. Not sure what's in development and I could use my current system longer. If it's a good time though, I would like to build something. I always try to aim one step below the best. I mainly play World of Warcraft, a DirectX game but I do play OpenGL games like Quake4 and DooM3 on rare occasion. Looking for an AMD platform: psu, cpu, board, memory, and video card. If my 21 inch Hitachi CRT ever dies I would also like to get a 22 inch or better wide screen LCD. Advice please? -- Regards, joeuser - Still looking for the 'any' key...
