[hlds] STV No Longer Showing

2011-10-14 Thread John Moroney
Has anyone else come across a problem with the STV bot since the last
update? This is in relation to DODS, not sure about other games. It
shows it as connecting, joining spec, demo starts recording but no bot
is visible at all. The STV is not listed in the Spectator menu of the
servers list either. It can be joined by manually adding the connect
command in console though.

Probably because the item servers have been down and they're trying to
restore services. Same thing happens when Steam goes down.

 and
it crashes the client back to OS without any warning or message.

It's frequent and it appears to be happening on other servers aswell, as
i have been told. Can't confirm that 100%, though.

I think it should have something to do with the item server as long as
 it is a synchronized crash.

Every frame, the engine will sleep until it’s time for the next tick.
However, the Sleep system call may be imprecise and wake the process up
slightly later than intended. Setting host_timer_spin_ms will reduce the
value passed into Sleep by that many milliseconds, but will cause the
process to busy wait for longer while it waits for the next tick and thus
increase CPU usage. The var will not improve your framerate if you’re
constantly below 66 (i.e. a bogged down server), but may improve consistency
on a sub-second scale.

Can anyone from Valve comment about host_timer_spin_ms?

This seem to make the FPS more consistent when enabled, it always stay
at 66. When it's disabled, it's mostly between 60-70.

Every frame, the
engine will sleep until it’s time for
the next tick. However, the Sleep system
call may be imprecise and wake the
process up slightly later than intended.
Setting host_timer_spin_ms will reduce
the value passed into Sleep by that many
milliseconds, but will cause the process
to busy wait for longer while it waits
for the next tick and thus increase CPU
usage. The var will not improve your
framerate if you’re constantly below 66
(i.e. a bogged down server), but may
improve consistency on a sub-second
scale.

Can anyone
  from Valve comment about
  host_timer_spin_ms?

This seem to make the FPS more consistent
when enabled, it always stay at 66. When
  it's disabled, it's mostly between 60-70.

Yes, I am very relieved that this
Major Update is not one of Valve's
infamous Friday Updates.

2011-10-14 Thread Mike O'Laughlen
Valve,

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

This is the best update in years. Maps? Sure they're fun, but these perf
enhancements have changed the behavior of the game for me. Tracking targets
in melee and navigating through the area in and out of windows and ledges
with a scout is so much more intuitive and enjoyable now.

Thank you.

Mike
