On Tue, 9 Oct 2001, Stan Hoeppner wrote: This might be worth the money for a niche small dedicated app that doesn't generate much data, but for HLDS files? My CS dir is 384MB alone! Any idea what size RAMdisk you'd need to put all the HLDS files in it? Would you store your log files there as well? If not, you've got some surgery to perform on your HLDS config, in order to write out to your physical disk ban file and logs in REALTIME. If your server goes down (the machine, not HLDS), bye bye ban file, logs, etc. Suffice it to say, trying to use a RAMdisk to host the files for an HLDS server is a crappy idea. Well.. trying to use THAT ramdisk might not fly, but I think Quantum makes something called an SSD (Solid State Drives or such) which is exactly as it sounds. A hardrive made up of memory chips. Ungodly performance compared to your normal spinning disk type media. Of course, they are expensive as hell! :) Oh and they werent very big. I think last I saw they were around 1GB max, but it's been awhile. Cant imagine what a RAID set-up with these puppies would be like. I think the limitations of current drive controllers would be the bottleneck. What you need for the PC is something like the Amiga's RAD device. It was a RAM drive that was recoverable after a reboot (usually). One of the many neat tricks the Amiga was able to pull of back in the 80's. But other than the intial map loading, there isnt a whole lot of disk I/O on an hlds server is there (assuming your arent swapping)? -- Ken Kirchner: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Assistant System Administrator : Tel (318)222-2638 ShreveNet, Inc. : Fax (318)213-2650 ShreveNet - Your Premium Internet Service Provider!

NNTP Server for HLDS Mailing lists now available.
This is the only time I will spam the lists with this info. Who ever runs the FAQ can feel free to add it to the FAQ. I have added Mail/News gateways of the hlds and hlds_linux to my news server. These two news groups are open to the public from my news server. To connect, add news.shreve.net to your favorite NNTP client. You will see shrevenet.local.hlds and shrevenet.local.hlds_linux made available. The benefits: - Posts/replies will be threaded in typical Usenet fashion. - Posts are transparently relayed between the news group and list. - Group to group posts should be faster than the mailing list. - I can filter mail-loops more quickly than Valve. (one is already in place to kill anything from postmaster@) The drawbacks: - There is a bit more latency between group/mailing list posts. Remember! There is no need to post to the news group and the list! Post to EITHER one, but NOT both! It will take care of it. If you are responding to the mailing list, always use the hlds*@list.valvesoftware.com address. Dont reply to both the list and the news group if it presents you with that option (Pine will). BTW, I have been subscribing and unsubscribing accounts to the listserver all night trying to get this setup. The ListServ has been working just perfectly (and pretty quickly too) for me. I think you guys who have trouble unsubscribing are just f*cking it all up. Do this: To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: your subscribed e-mail address Subject: Doesnt matter Body: UNSUBSCRIBE hlds (or hlds_linux) QUIT Send that and see if it works.

Re: NNTP Server for HLDS Mailing lists now available.
not sure if my other mail made it out, so my apologies for the repeat: I am having some authentication issues with my news server. I had to block outside access to the groups until the software company can tell me whats going wrong. The news groups are still up and taking in mail from the list, but they are only accessable locally. This will be fixed shortly I hope and I will send an email when they are back up. RE: New Beta Counter-Strike Server and HLTV
Since the beta upgrade I have had 2 crashes on my CS server (Prior to the beta upgrade it hadnt crashed once since upgraded to 1.1.0.8 and CS1.3). It crashed once on Sep 27 and again on Sep 29 on maps de_dust and cs_backalley respectively. The last line of the logs for both crashes was: Error NUM_FOR_EDICT: bad pointer Anyone else seeing this behavior? I can live with 2 crashes in 72 hours. Re: New Beta Counter-Strike Server and HLTV
Erik, if your taking suggestions grin then how about: - Different color of text for HLTV spectator chat (it gets confusing, even with the 's around spectator names. I suggest bright yellow). - Persistant Connection option so it will continuously try to reconnect to a server if it gets dumped (or kicked by a bunch of admin mod abusing llama's!). - Allow cvar storage in the HLTV server so it can authenticate with programs like Admin Mod. - List names of the other spectators as well with the 'status' command. - Ban functionality of some sort for HLTV server. I think that would make me happy. If you dont I may have to boycott you! ROFL! -Ken On Thu, 27 Sep 2001, Eric Smith wrote: HLTV: - Commentator chat as centerprint. - Remove % from names and chat text. - Proxy handles paused games correctly (no 1 second loops). - Proxy broadcasts now password protectable (clientpassword). - Fixed recording demos on proxy after first changelevel. - Fixed 2 printf issues (in logfile and commentator name). - Added client command 'joingame'. Feature must be enabled on proxy with 'allowJoinGame 1'. - Added client command 'status'. shows game server IP, number of spectators and an info text (set in proxy console with 'infotext my hltv info text') - Added command line parameter '-ip' to specify the in_address for multihomed proxies - Fixed 'Local IP' was shown as 127.0.0.1 bug - Fixed 'Host_Error:UserMsg:Not Present On Client 76' bug. RE: New Beta Counter-Strike Server and HLTV
omg! See how easily they bend to your will when you threaten to boycott! It works! :-) I guess I shouldnt cheer until I see the suggestions implemented, but anyway... Recently I've had problems during map changes where my admin mod authentication info gets dropped. I have to re-execute the authentication cfg file then reconnect to the server. Is this a client problem of nuking the cvars between maps, or is this a server-side Admin mod issue? It used to work perfectly. -Ken On Thu, 27 Sep 2001, Eric Smith wrote: I'll make sure your suggestions are added to our Requested Features list for HLTV. HLTV Support Site
Has anyone undertaken an effort to provide a site with all the HLTV FAQ's, a forum for HLTV discussion, and a repository for utilities and custom map overview files? I proclaim myself as HLTV's biggest fan here and now! If nothing else, an FTP site for the overview files would be a great asset to the HLTV community. Re: HLTV Question
On Fri, 21 Sep 2001, Lee Latham wrote: How much bandwidth does HLTV require? From what I've seen by watching net_graph, it uses about 1.2Kb down/1Kb up for each directly connect client. Of course, if you had 10 or even 100 clients using the multicast stream your server should not source more than that. I have limited my clients to 6 (default is 128) so I should probably not see more than 8Kb in either direction of additional bandwidth use. I limit my clients because I dont have multicast enabled, even if I did, there arent enough customers at my ISP who would really use it. From what I've been told, it would be rare for multicast streams to make it past your upstream provider. Multicast is really only going to work for gamers who are directly connected to the same network the proxy is connected to. To expand the viewer area you need to connect proxies to the Master proxy and have them stream multicast to their own multicast enabled networks. Thanks Tony! It's working fine for me! -Ken On Thu, 20 Sep 2001, Tony wrote: PunkBuster has support to not kick the HLTV proxy - it is currently undocumented support. To allow HLTV to coexist with PB, get your HLTV proxy working and then type status in your HLDS console to see what the Player Name of the proxy is on your system ... for purposes of this example, I'll assume it is Proxy. Now, in your PB config file (default pbsvhl.cfg), add the following line: ProxyName proxy This will cause the PB server to not kick any player named proxy as long as that player never has any frags.
