RE: [hlds_linux] Latest update, CPU feedback
Maybe alfred will lern to keep his mouth a little more shut... :D Now he is in a dead end. If the optimization is not possiblem, people will still ask about it, it it is possible, people will try to rush it in. :) On Wed, 2004-02-11 at 00:08, Rock wrote: -- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] We will be waiting and sorry ahead of time for opening the pandora's box of when when, what is it, come on release it, when, how much better, when when when. :) Alfred Reynolds [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:I have another potential optimization I am looking into. Re: [hlds_linux] Latest update, CPU feedback
I have another potential optimization I am looking into. This one is hairier than the CS one but could provide even more of a gain. Good, good. Only seeing minor CS benefits from the latest update across our P4 platforms (mixture of kernels 2.2 to 2.6.1 and hz rates), not checked on AMD as yet. It is a gain though, any of which is worthwhile. Alfred Any timescale on this other optimisation? We are still seeing worse performance from Intel compared to AMD platforms, will any of these issues be addressed in these updates? Alfred - before steam was released - the GE worked great on intel and amd - any idea what changed vs. the complexity and the functionality of Steam? :P Guess that could be a freaky question :P Seems though - its always the easy answer that you over look ... and then hit yourself in the head telling yourself you knew that!!! :P Britt PZGN - Original Message - From: Vapor [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, February 10, 2004 11:33 PM Subject: Re: [hlds_linux] Latest update, CPU feedback I have another potential optimization I am looking into. Britt Priddy (PZGN) wrote: Alfred - before steam was released - the GE worked great on intel and amd - any idea what changed vs. the complexity and the functionality of Steam? :P Guess that could be a freaky question :P If I'm to speculate, there appears to have been a progressively higher requirement of available cashe for each new serverenginerelease for several year and 1.6 adding steam doesn't seem like an exception. If we look at the difference in chashing structure of a P4 512Ki L2 vs an AMD 512Ki L2 they seem similar at first glance, but there are in fact 2 big differences. An AMDs L1 cashe is HUGE, 128Ki (vs about 32Ki in a P4) and the AMDs L1 is in addition exclusive (info in L1 not repeated in L2) while the P4's isn't. Thus when you line them up get AMD 640Ki of which 20% is extra fast L1 cashe P4 512Ki of which 6-7*% is extra fast L1 cashe (*=an estimate) If we also factor in how much higher penalty the high-MHz deeply pipelineed P4 incours from a cashe miss I don't find it surprizing that P4 performs relativly badly. It's simply running out of cashed data and sittig around literally doing nothing while waiting for (comparativly) ultra slow main memory to send it something to do. I'm not sure exactly how the latest performance optimization affects cashrequirement by the engine, but if eg (in a multiserver / box enviroment) it makes some of the highly repeated computations again fit inside L1/L2 of an AMD but still not for a P4, I can see how AMDs could get a huge 25% CPUdrop while a P4 only a few modest %. Again, this is just a guess from someone that doesn't have all the facts. Someonelike Alfred could probably add a lot of more insight *nudge* and perhaps even elaborate on what this next optimization step he has in mind is about :) -- /Stefan Software never has bugs. It just develops random features. =) ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux
RE: [hlds_linux] Latest update, CPU feedback
I must say i am very pleased to hear you people are busy with this matter! Gives me faith back in steam and valve, cause i thought this would never going to happen! Yesterday i reported lag spikes on aztec and inferno. Some how on inferno this issnt the matter anymore, just aztec spikes, but i put off aztec and replaced it with aztec from 1.5, people love to play that map too, and it causes no lag at all! One thing i did notice after last update, and i dont know if i am the only one, sometimes when bomb explodes pings go sky-high in the server, this is only about 2/3 sec. It doesnt happen alot, but it happends sometimes..
