Re: 3380 DDR to 3390 Question

2009-12-16 Thread Stanley Rarick
There is a pure software solution available, not free, but I don't know
what the licensing costs are.

To quote the vendor: "VM Magic, a system software extension to the IBM
Virtual Machine (VM) facility, gives the VM user the capability of
simulating any supported disk device. Compatibility problems between
different disk types or technologies and software are, therefore,
eliminated."

Visteon VM shutdown

shut down their VM environment, consisting of 1 VM (level unknown, but I
would guess 5.3) hosting 5 guests: 3 identical 5.3 systems - 1
production and 2 test/dev, and two test MVS systems (the MVS systems
were moved off to their own LPARs)

Time to look for a new job. ;-)

Re: Disaster Recovery Scenarios

2008-03-14 Thread Stanley Rarick
In agreement with Dale, while I understand the need to test basic
functionality (i.e. do all the tapes restore, and applications run), ant
the need to fit the test within the purchased test time, and the
convenience of running a test in a virtual machine configured to match
your home system, I would consider part of the DR test to test your
ability to quickly restore and run in a real disaster situation where, I
would think, you will NOT be running second level and the environment
will not necessarily match your home system. Therefore you need to test
how flexibly your configuration responds (or not) to real conditions you
will encounter in a real disaster, and first-level performance is a side
benefit.

issue at a DR test, until people complain about it or you can't finish the
test in the alloted time slot! Believe me, performance can be an issue,
(more on the z/OS side than VM, of course). During most of my DR tests,
the box VM was running on was generally bigger than what I had on the home
system! :-)>

The real key to running VM in an LPAR at DR is to make sure that all
required changes are well documented. Try to keep all the virtual
addresses the same at DR as the home system and remember that the real
addresses may vary from DR site to DR site and even from test to test, (in
other words don't hard code anything unless you are prepared to change it).
if you can keep the virtual addresses the same and it's the same type of
device, then you shouldn't need to change any configuration files. Make
sure you have some way to bring your VM system up without starting any
virtual machines, (AUTOLOG1 should do nothing or very little), until you
have had a chance to make directory changes and configuration file
changes, (if necessary). One way to do this is to query the CPUID and
only do a "normal" start up if you are running on your home system.
Our "normal" IPL only starts a few machines, the operator has to enter a
STARTVM command to bring everything up. This is useful for weekend
testing also!

You cannot do this in XEDIT, or in linemode. You must use a program that knows
how to do extended attributes, specifically the SA 3270 orders. XMENU, IOS3270
(maybe), DMS/CMS (maybe), and a host of others. Warning: writing such code

For a return code, LA R15,value is *much* faster than a L - only one
storage fetch.

I really would not have left it to chance, I would have defined a
word-aligned constant rather than using a literal. However, it might not
have been as chancy as it may seem. The literal pool is doubleword
aligned and boundary alignment may have been a factor in determining
where the literal resided. I would like to think that the 8-byte
multiples are put at the front, the 4-byters next, then the twos
followed by everybody else. In looking at an assembly listing, that
seems to be the sequence. The first two literals in the program are
=x'A00', the next =x'FF', etc. In the literal pool, all 4 byte
entries (there were no 8 byte literals) precede the two byte literals
and then come the ones of only 1 byte. Within each of these groups, the
literals appear in the order in which they were defined. There were no
long strings defined as literals in the particular listing.

I agree, it does seem non-intuitive. The initial SR R15,R15 was

probably would have chosen L R15,=X'...' - a habit learned, when
machines were slower, based on the knowledge that they were mostly

from memory into a register.

If your habit was to use L Rx,=X'...' you were probably lucky in the old
days the =X literal would not necessarily be word-aligned, causing
two fetches to load the register, or, in the days when alignment really
mattered... a program exception.

Better to use L R15,=A(X'...') if alignment is a concern and you want to
use literals.

Then the literal IS aligned on a fullword boundary.

The initial SR 15,15 is unlikely to be setting the default return code..
.it's clearing the register preparing for the different option bytes to
be OR'd in. I agree the macro could (should?) have generated a single L
instruction instead, but then what nits would we have to discuss? :-)
