RE: [IceHorses] What Gait

2007-04-22 Thread Karen Thomas
Could the footing have something to do with it? It's a soft gait, but I
can't determine what. I think the footing might be a factor...or long feet
 or perhaps heavier shoes

There's something about his whole rear end in picture #2 that looks twisted to
me, but I think it might just be the angle of the photo - I'm not sure though.
If you look at all four feet, the feet don't line up, so we're looking at the
horse at an angle.

We don't know for absolutely sure, because it's only a picture, but
placement of the legs can tell us a lot, and can eliminate some gaits.

My guess was fox trot for the first, and canter for the second.

[IceHorses] My First Endurance Ride

2007-04-22 Thread susan cooper
Friday afternoon I left the house and travelled the
short distance to Ride Camp in the Stillwater
Mountains in Fallon, NV. I got to camp, set up my
stuff and got Whisper out and walked her around. She
seemed calm and interested, but not nervous or
excited. We vetted in, and luckily, both vets there
this weekend were familiar with gaited horses, so
while she gaited and trotted for her trot out, they
knew what she was doing, so I got perfect scores for
my trot out. I told the vet it was my first ride,
and I had not a clue what I was doing, so he took a
lot of time to talk to me and tell me what to look for
in my horse. The most important being EDPP which is
eating, drinking, peeing and pooing. Any change from
her normal, and I was to bring my horse to him. He
also went over electrolying, and said it was an art as
well as a science, but that the horse needed to be
drinking well to start with, and the weather wasn't
going to be hot, so I probably didn't need them.

A husband and wife parked their rig next to mine and
she was riding in the Limited Distance 30 mile ride as
well. She had a lot of experience in Endurance, and
while her horse was fit, she was not, so she was only
doing the 30 and she said I could ride with her and
she would mentor me. I explained that another newbie
friend of mine was meeting me there, and that girl was
a bit pokey, so we may need to ride on without her, as
my goal was to get a completion in the allotted time.
My friend arrived for dinner and the pre-ride meeting
and met my new friend who had agreed to mentor us
during the ride.

I actually slept pretty well, and just felt Whisper
(who was tied to the trailer as Lili told me how) a
couple of times. She had eaten well, but was not
drinking very much, but considering how cool it was, I
was not concerned. We saw the 50 milers off at 7am,
at which time I saddled up Whisper. There were only
11 LD riders, so we left at the back of the pack a
little after 8am. Our plan was to walk the first
mile, but all 3 horses were antsy, so we trotted out
right away. If they were going to waste energy, we
figured it might as well be spent going forward!
After the front horses got out of sight, our horses
calmed down, and Whisper's trot became more relaxed
and head down. I must say, my friend, who has been a
slowpoke during our training rides, kept up! We
trotted mostly with a little bit of walking the first
3 or 4 miles, untill we hit a bad rocky area. This
lasted for more than a mile, and when we got out of
it, we had a bit of time to make up. Whisper's two
trail buddies at that point hit their trot stride,
which was a bit too fast for Whisper's trot, so
Whisper cantered, but her canter is nice and relaxed,
so I let her pick her gait, and I picked the speed.

At the first water stop (about 8 miles in) Whisper
didn't drink much, but it was cool, so I wasn't
concerned. From this point, the trail wound up a wash
thru a narrow canyon, and it was absolutely georgeous.
I had my camera with me, but I was too busy riding to
get my camera out. We hit a pretty good pace in the
areas where we could, because the rocky areas slowed
us down so much. We got into the vet check/lunch stop
(the halfway point at 15 miles) after 2 hours and 45
minutes, and Whisper pulsed down to the required 60
bpm within 3 minutes! Here she drank water and pigged
out on beat pulp, hay, apples and carrots. This was a
mandatory 1 hour hold, and when I vetted Whisper in,
she got A's on everything, but a B on gut sounds. I
vetted her in before I fed her, so next time I will
let her eat for 15 minutes before I vet her in.

The three of us left after an hour on fresh horses.
Whisper was still having to canter to keep up, but at
this point, my pokey friend and her horse were
hitting their groove at their fast trot. My friend
realized her horse was enjoying it and I was happily
surprised that I had to actually ask her to slow her
trot down so Whisper didn't have to canter the whole
way. We left the good dirt road for another wash down
a canyon that was really narrow. At this point,
Whisper hit a really nice trot and we wound our way
around the rocks. At the next water stop, Whisper
realized she better get a drink, and tanked up with
the other 2 horses. We hit another water stop at the
25 mile point, and I realized this was the distance of
most LD's, and while we still had 5 miles to go, it
was pretty easy so far. It was the last 5 miles that I
had to encourage Whisper at bit, but she was still
ears up and seeming to enjoy herself. We didn't trot
so fast by then, so Whisper hit her saddle rack which
I enjoyed! We ambled down the road at this nice pace,
and I was glad to see Whisper had her head up, ears
up, and looking around with interest at her
surroundings! We crossed the finish line at 2pm, 6
hours into our ride, but with only 5 hours on the
trail. That gave us an average of 6mph for the ride.
We vetted in shortly thereafter, and Whisper got A's

[IceHorses] Sensation rigging pictures

2007-04-22 Thread Karen

Susan, here is the picture of the rigging thingy that my local saddler made for
me. Dana now makes one almost identical - I think it may be standard on new
Sensations she sells now - at minimum, it is an option.

Since webbers are made to slide onto a stirrup bar and this is a closed loop,
you have to turn the endurance stirrups upsidedown to get it to work. Un-bolt
the top of the endurance stirrups and slide the bolt through the webber loop.
Then you slide the open end through the Sensation loop, and fasten the
t-buckle. It works like a charm. The Sensation dealers can get you a spare
stirrup attachment for about $20 I think - I've been dealing with
www.kaarenjordan.com.

It was not like a walking horse canter, it was very fast and I didnt

Is there any such a thing as a walking horse canter? :) Holly and Mac
could not possibly have more different canters - Holly, soft and easy and
wonderfully smooth, a gait you could ride all day; Mac's is long-strided,
rough and absolutely miserable to ride. Both are registered TWH, both with
Midnight Sun and Merry Go Boy showing on their papers!

BTW, my QH, Sundance, had a long-strided, strung-out canter when I got him,
and it was pretty rough. As we worked on getting him off his forehand, his
canter got much, much smoother.

[IceHorses] tiv video

2007-04-22 Thread Janice McDonald
Here are two videos my friend took today on our paso fino ride. The
first one is in a dry lake bed. When the pasos came fast from behind
I got tense, because when horses do that to stonewall he gets so
excited he either takes off with them or gets freaked out and wants to
jig and get ready to protect himself. So I got myself prepared, feet
level in the stirrups, seated correctly, all that, and you can see in
the video it was definitely anti-climactic. I don't think anything
gets him very excited. In the second video I was trying to get him to
do his fancy prancey walk for the camera but he only trotted, and
circled around as if to tell me he wanted to not leave the other
horses. i wasn't expecting his sharp turn so not very great riding!
I wasnt steering really :)

[IceHorses] maybe not a pony

2007-04-22 Thread Janice McDonald
maybe tivar is not a pony after all. This lady said today My horse
always gets very weird around ponies. He acts silly, flagging his
tail, blowing, in the show ring! (she does hunter jumper stuff)
then she said so when I saw you unload your pony from the trailer I
thought oh brother. But my horse acted like he is just another horse
not a pony. Interesting haha. I think because altho he is short, he
was just a little shorter than the pasos we were with and much more
powerfully built. Maybe with the ponies in the show ring her horse
felt they were animals he could dominate. maybe? Her horse is an
arab.

today when I got off tivar at the end of the ride my saddle
practically fell off. It had been unbelievably loose Lord only knows
how long, and we had been trotting and even catering fast in and out
trees, even one incident where I almost came off him grabbing a tree
to catch my balance like an idiot, once trotting fast around a hairpin
curve and lungeing up a steep hill. I couldnt believe the saddle
stayed on! I think a sensation is a little more like a treed saddle
when it comes to stability. Like a treed saddle will sorta stick to a
sweet spot even if the girth is loose. I think it was like that. Or
maybe the medi cheval pad helped? But I dont think I would need a
breast collar or crupper unless I knew we were gonna be doing some
really rough hill work. My girth had slipped back steadily, or
forward one, so that it needed tightening and I didnt know. But
anyway, it didnt slip until i jumped to the ground and pulled it with
me. and even then it only slipped about four inches.

he did one thing on the trail that was scarey, and everyone laughed so
hard about it! I felt like I was about to fall and yet everyone was
even laughing about it back at the trailers! Tivar was in front and
started going faster, faster, and the paso behind me started really
gaiting and he acted like he didnt want her to pass him and we were
headed toward a big tree so I leaned left and Tivar chose to go right,
so I leaned even further left, not cueing him in any way, but usually
he just goes with me if I lean, so I am leaning further and further
and he is going more and more the other way to avoid the tree and at
the last minute I grabbed his mane with my right hand and actually
caught myself from falling by reaching and grabbing the tree, then
when tivar kept on a chuggin there I am ygh hanging on to
the tree and everyone just started laughing like it was the funniest
thing they ever saw! So its like he makes his own decisions if the
rider seems unclear or anything :) One person kept saying she wished
I had a picture of it :)
