<<< OK, they must have changed the day. I wonder if the same applies for Indonesian 1220-1300? >>> The time slot 1220-1300 is a little problematic here on 738 because of heavy predawn splatter from 740-KCBS, and 1143 usually isn't received very well here at that time. I'll try for them again next Saturday night Taiwan time, though. Nick in Victoria usually receives 1143 much better than I do, so he may be able to track down a signal prior to 1300 on our local Saturday morning. The recordings here indicate that the special Migrant Fishermen program on 738 and 1143-Taiwan Fisheries is broadcast ONLY on Saturday night, Taiwan time (Saturday morning, west coast time). Just out picking up some limbs shook loose by a ‘big wind’ we had here a few weeks back and found one part of my 4-element Wellbrook phased delta loop on the ground — chewed off by my neighbors wagging maple tree limbs. Fixed it and gave a listen to see how it was working to find even more local noise than when I last used it over a month ago. I long for another trip to Grayland, Lubec or even the eastern shore of Maryland where we can at least find much reduced levels of QRN and a shot at some DX across a pond. [IRCA] 738-Magic Tracked Down and ID'ed... 4 Months Later
Thanks very much to Rockwork 4 DXpedition partner Tom Rothlisberger for checking his 738 kHz files for July 9th, and confirming that we both had received 738-Magic (5 kW in Canterbury, New Zealand) without ever knowing it. My reception was on a "backup" 15" FSL that was et up primarily to record a huge signal from 738-Tahiti at the time. That 18-minute MP3 recording wasn't even reviewed until this morning, when the mystery co-channel showed up underneath Tahiti late in the recording. Tom reviewed his own files for the time and not only found the mystery co-channel, but a "Magic" ID as well. So primarily as a result of the clunker conditions this morning, we both have a new (and pretty unusual) Kiwi station in our July DXpedition logs. https://app.box.com/s/2wao0ha3xocddwv9mgwjzyfx81pyqj6g 73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] 738 Tahiti at decent level at 06:47 UTC
Any chance for running some coax across the road and then to a BOG? In years past, I thought about using underground conduits (pipes, etc) to run under the road by my Haida Gwaii property to access 160 acres of forested land. I've never done so, as I have plenty of space down to the ocean, but the thought had occurred to me to experiment. Of course running a line on the road is probably not very wise, unless it's buried under snow and ice! 73,Walt On Tue, Jan 19, 2016 at 6:52 AM, Paul B. [IRCA] 738-Tahiti Rocks In Again
It isn't nearly as exotic as Nick's recording of an apparent 1017-Tonga this morning, but 738-Tahiti was also unusually strong from south of the Equator this morning-- maybe a consolation prize for this lackluster location? This was African-sounding music at good strength at 1343 UTC-- pretty typical of its signal from 1250-1400. https://app.box.com/s/45oa7fv6xp45kwdmux8t0s2snl5jvbha 73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

I suspect these could be 3GI and JOBB?? (the MWoffset list says that they have about a 1.5Hz separation, but the records are from 5 and 6 years ago. [IRCA] 738-Tahiti Audio at 0502... the Fake TA
Hello All, All the reports of TA activity in the east and midwest made me scramble for my ICF-2010 spotting receiver, in hopes of hearing the new season's first TA audio (six of them were heard here last season). Scanning the band eagerly, I noticed that the usual suspects on 675, 693, 756 and 1377 had ghostlike heterodynes at best, but there was a booming carrier on 738 kHz. Turning the ICF-2010 toward the Asiatic TP direction nulled out the heterodyne, convincing me that something was coming in from Europe :-) Setting up the 9' PVC box loop and modified C.Crane SWP Ultralight in the back yard, the monster loop was quickly turned to the NE / SW direction (for Europe), and immediately brought in a nice audio signal on 738 kHz! After recording a few minutes of apparent French, I checked the band again for more TA's, finding nothing. Thinking over this bizarre situation, I suddenly remembered that the French voices I heard on 738 were the same ones that were heard before in the RFO broadcasts from Tahiti last summer. Then it became clear that this TA was actually Tahiti fading in on its sunset peak (at the same time that Europe would fade in on its sunrise peak), using a European language at the same (reciprocal) loop bearing as Europe on the 9' loop! It's nice to hear Tahiti in this DU-dead zone (for only the second time ever), but it wasn't exactly the desired result :-) I hope that this comical situation will prove as humorous to others as it is to me. 73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org
[IRCA] 738-BEL2 (Taiwan Fisheries) Apparently Fixes the Buzzing Carrier
Hello All, For the second day in a row, the signal from Taiwan's 738 kHz BEL2 station has had a clean-sounding carrier, which is much improved from its ragged sound during the entire month of September. Yesterday the BEL2 signal showed up with a clean sound for the first time on my 3' bedside loop, making me think I had finally found the clean-carrier South Korean KBS station reported by Bruce, Guy and others :-) This morning, when testing the new 9' PVC box loop here for the first time in TP-DXing, not only did BEL2 have a clean-sounding, strong signal on 738 kHz, but the KBS station HLKG (South Korean) was also easily heard, along with another Chinese station under these two. The gain of the 9' loop made these three stations mix together for a nice MP3 at 1400 UTC, making the frequency sound like a TP graveyard channel.
[IRCA] 738 Taiwan's Ragged Carrier Revealed in Perseus Waterfall Display
Gary DeBock and others have had frequent comments this month about the ragged carrier of 738 Taiwan. I decided to take a close look at 738 with the Perseus receiver's feature called Zoom mode. Sure enough, there's something strange about the 738 signal! I've posted a screen capture of 738 Taiwan's signal here: * http://tinyurl.com/738-taiwan* ** Guy Atkins Puyallup, WA http://fivebelow.squarespace.com ** ** ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] 738 Taiwan's Ragged Carrier Revealed in Perseus Waterfall ...
Hi Guy, Thanks very much for posting the photo of the Perseus' waterfall display of the 738-Taiwan ragged carrier. For some reason, the 738-Taiwan audio (on your Perseus SDR) in the MP3 clip sounds much more normal than the typical 738-Taiwan audio received here on the C.Crane SWP ultralight. Maybe the Perseus filtering removes some of the noisy components of the impaired signal. I posted an MP3 of 738-Taiwan's signal here this morning (of the same approximate signal strength as your MP3) in the Ultralightdx sound file site, which includes a definite buzzing sound in the background of the Chinese conversation. This buzzing sound doesn't show up on the other TP's, except of course for the North Koreans. 73, Gary ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] 738 Taiwan's Ragged Carrier Revealed in Perseus
Hi Gary, Thanks for posting the MP3 of Taiwan's 738 audio as heard on your ultralight. Wow, I certainly haven't heard anything like that buzz on 738 over on this side of town! I'd suggest that maybe it's local QRM in your vicinity, but I know Bruce, Walt, and John have heard the buzzy audio too. That's a possibility about Perseus being more immune to the noise, but the three guys mentioned above all have SDR receivers too. I don't think there's anything special about Perseus compared to Bruce's SDR-IQ or John's WinRadio that would cause the buzz to disappear or be filtered out. The noise blanker in Perseus works well and has two effective blanking widths, but I rarely turn it on. The noise reduction control is used more often, but I know I haven't tried it on Taiwan 738. 73, Guy Atkins Puyallup, WA http://fivebelow.squarespace.com Date: Mon, 21 Sep 2009 00:50:34 EDT From: d1028g...@aol.com Subject: [IRCA] 738 Taiwan's Ragged Carrier Revealed in Perseus Waterfall ... Re: [IRCA] 738 Tahiti audible now
Hi Walt, I rewound the tape on Pereus to 0616 from last night's SDR recordings, and found RFO Tahiti exactly as you described. From 0630-0637 though, they were doing quite a bit better, with presumed news items in French. I've just finished my first of four nights babysitting John B's antennas from his Orcas Island home while he and his wife are exploring Peru. Since I have a preliminary release of ver. 1.1C of Perseus that can record all of medium wave, my plan is to record the band continuously from 0530 - 1505 UTC, with an antenna change from the Aussie-beam Super Conti Loop at 1030 UTC to the NW Wellbrook Phased Array (I gotta get up out of bed for the antenna switch...it ain't automated yet :^) I had the receiver recording from 200 kHz to 1800 kHz last night, but this evening I think I will set it for 100 kHz - 1700 MHz to capture more of longwave. My plan is to review the previous night's recordings, at least for the highlights, during the day, and dig in deeper into the DX over the weeks ahead. More details will probably make their way onto my blog. 73, Guy Atkins Puyallup, WA USA DXing from Orcas Island www.perseus-sdr.blogspot.com --- Date: Thu, 18 Sep 2008 23:18:13 -0700 From: Walter Salmaniw [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [IRCA] 738 Tahiti audible now To: IRCA@hard-core-dx.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Quite a strong carrier, and the usual weak modulation from RFO Tahiti at 06:16 UTC tonight..Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

You really need to go with something that's made for MW dx..doesn't need a lot of room. My current favourite is the ALA 100 from Wellbrook. Check out some of the loggings from Colin N. who lives way up high in an apartment. He has a couple of ALAs. Another option is to construct a box loopthose have been around for close to a 100 years, and still work wonders. All sorts of commercial loops, etc also available. 50' of wire is fine for SW, but woefully inadequate for distant MW dxWalt ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
