Jean Dreze and a human rights activist Kirity Roy are paying the prices for
their passion, courage and extraordinary work for the poor and marginalized
people of Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
Dr. Binayak Sen has been in Raipur Jail for more than one year. His only
crime was being a doctor; he was much involved in redressing the grievances of
the poor adivasis (tribals) of Chhatisgarh and also raised his voice against
the illegal killings of adivasis in the name of Salwan Judum (peace mission).
He was alleged of violating the provisions of the Chhatisgarh Special Public
Security Act 2005 and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967, and detained
in May 2007.
The Supreme Court of India had also rejected his bail petition in December
2007. In the meantime, Dr. Binayak Sen was declared as the first winner from
South Asia of the “Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights”,
which generated the global support for him. 22 Nobel laureates wrote letters to
Smt. Pratibha Patil, the President of India, Dr Manmohan Singh, the Prime
Minister and Dr Raman Singh, the Chief Minister of Chattisgarh for his release
so that he can collect his award and continue his valuable work for adivasis
but their voices were not heard.
Another person Prof. Jean Dreze has been fighting against corruption in NREGA
(National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) to ensure 100 days work for Dalits,
Adivasis and Poor so that their right to food can be secured. He had organized
a “Social Audit” on May 26, 2008 at Chatarpur of Palamu district in Jharkhand,
where huge numbers of villagers had participated and spoken out publicly about
how they were cheated in NREGA by the contractors, development mafias and the
government officials. After the social audit, Jean Dreze was alleged by the
Collector and the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Palamu district.
Though Jean Dreze is a member of the NREGA Council and is mandated to help in
auditing the scheme by the law of the land but the reports of the responsible
Collector and SP accuse him of attempting to malign the state government,
falsifying the statements and assaulting the government officials. After seeing
his passion of work for the poor; the villagers consider him like a living God
for them but the district administration coined him as a violator of laws but
his fight for poor is on.
Similarly a human rights activist from West Bengal Kirity Roy was alleged,
his office was raided and a criminal case was filed by the police at Taltolla
Police Station under sections 120[B] (criminal conspiracy); 170 (personating a
public servant); 179 (refusing to answer public servant authorized to
question); and 229 (personation of juror or assessor) of the Indian Penal Code
(IPC). He was charged for organizing a “People’s Tribunal against Torture” in
Moulali, Kolkata on 9 and 10 June, 2008.
Though Kirity Roy had invited all the relevant officials, including the
Police Commissioner of Kolkata but they refused to accept it and asked him for
giving them a written explanation on the legality of the public event. During
the hearings a jury of human rights defenders, jurists and medical personnel
sat on the panels, which were co-chaired by the former Chief Justice of the
Sikkim High Court, Justice Malay Sengupta and the Former Chairperson of the
National Commission for Women, Dr Mohini Giri. 82 cases related to police
torture, rape and illegal killings in West Bengal including Nandigram cases
were heard in the tribunal. After the tribunal the police coined him as a

I have clip of her beautiful speach which can't be shared through
mail-group because of file size (about 5MB). Can be shared as per request.

Its content is an old footage from the "Earth Summit Conference" organized
by the United Nations back in 1992, and the scene is taken from a plenary
session under the theme, "Development and the Environment".

The Little Girl Who Shocked World Leaders Into Silence

The speaker is Severn Suzuki, a 13-year-old Canadian girl, and her
 audience is world leaders.

Two aspects of the footage got my attention: The speaker, and her message.
At the age of 9, Severn started her own Environmental Children's
Organization (ECO), made up of a small group of children committed to
teaching other kids about the ongoing environmental crisis. In 1992,
Severn and her group raised enough money to attend the Premier Earth
Summit in Brazil to warn decision makers of the catastrophic results of
their actions — or inactions as we see today — on future generations.

And this is what she had to say:

"Hello, I am Severn Suzuki speaking for ECO the environmental children's
organization. We are a group of 12- and 13-year-olds trying to make a
difference. Venessa Suthie, Morgan Geisler, Michelle Quigg and I. We have
raised all the money to come here ourselves, to come 5000 miles to tell
you adults you must change your ways.

Coming up here today I have no hidden agenda. I am fighting for my future.
Losing my future is not like losing an election or a few points on the
stock market. I am here to speak for all generations to come. I am here to
speak on behalf of the starving children around the world whose cries go
unheard. I am here to speak for the countless animals dying across this
planet because they have nowhere left to go. I am afraid to go out in the

Bismillah [IslamCity] Re: A Challenge to all Atheists

2008-07-01 Thread alicegee333
Bismillahi Rahmani Raheem,

Assalam alaikum wara7matullah wabarakatuhu!

I hope this finds you in the best of health and iman.

I am writing in response to your statement about atheists. You're
basically stating that all atheists are evil doers. With all due
respect, but this is a very petty generalisation. Not all atheists
are bad people, and not all bad people are atheists.

Actually, most atheists I've met are the most humanist of all people.
They cannot comprehend the fact of going out of one's way to kill in
the name of a religion/cause/ideology. They do not understand how
that feels like. They beleive in peace, equality, justice and always
emphasise the equal moral worth of every human being even though they
cannot comprehend the fact of a "god" existing.

The reason for them being atheist is due to disappointment and their
only resort has been the laws of nature and science. In fact Dr.
Zakir Naik in India said that we should congratulate atheists for
being half a Muslim because they've already pronounced half of the
kalima "there is no god..."

Please do some first-hand research before going out and making
statements as such and judging a bunch of people who have had no hand
in the destruction of mankind.

In fact, all today's world leaders and those people you mentioned
(stalin, hitler, etc) belong all to a special cult, who under the
disguise of religion AND atheims (whenever it suits them) go out of
their way performing human sacrifices (such as war, inflicting famine
and climate change on purpose). This is done in order to keep the
balance between population and resources.

Assalam alikum warahmatullah wabarakatuhu.

به الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم مما يخالفه ) [ الرد على البكري : 376]

[/quote]
Indeed this is narrated from Muhammad b Abdulwahab. Sulayman b Abdullah
narrates this under the chapter ‘Asl of deeni Islam’. He quotes this from
Muhammad b Abdulwahab and this is the end part of very long explanation
regarding those who do not make takfir of the mushrik being kafir.
Sulayman b Abdullah narrates that:
[quote]"Muhammad b Abdulwahab stated the following:
“Some among them show enmity towards the mushrik however they do not make
takfir of them.”
Therefore this also results from not comprehending the meaning of
‘lailahaillaAllah’. Whereas this kalimah necessities the rejection of shirk at
the same time it also neceesities making takfir of those who perform this
(shirk). It is stable with ijma that it is a necessity to do this after the
establishing of hujjah. Also in suratul Ikhlas and Kafirun this reality is
expressed.
Regarding “we make takfir of you” which is mentioned in Mumtahina 60/4 Muhammad
b Abdulwahab states:
“Whoever does not accept as kafir that which the Qur’an has accepted as kafir
will have opposed to that which the rasul brought regarding tawhid and its
requirements.”
Muhammad b Abdulwahab again says:
“There are some, who does not love tawhid nor shows hatred and enmity (bughz)
towards it.” Our response for this is the following: The one who does not love
tawhid could not be muwahhid. It is because tawhid is the religion which Allah
(awj) is pleased with for His slaves. Allah (awj) commanded: “and have chosen
for you Islam as your religion.” (Al-Maeda 5/3) If an individual is pleased
with things which Allah is pleased with and actualized its requirements; surley
he would love tawhid. It is for the reason without love it is not possible to
mention Islam (if there is no love to twahid, there will be no Islam). Islam is
only possible with loving (the love for) tawhid.
"Shayhu’l-Islam Ibn Taymiyya (ra) said: “Ikhlas, is valid with the love of
Allah, and it is bound to asking for His pleasure. Whoever loves Allah will
also loves His deen. If he does not love Allah, this would mean he also does
not love His deen (or if he does not love His deen, therefore this means he
also does not love Allah) Muhabbah necessities the requirements of ikhlas;
meaning the conditions of tawhid.
Muhammad b Abdulwahab said: “There are some who do not love shirk however does
not show hatred and enmity towards shirk.”
I say: If someone is in this state, then this would show that this person does
not invalidate yet those which are invalidated by tawhid and also has not
rejected (abandoned) shirk. Although it is necessary to reject the worship of
any other than Allah and keep distant from this; he does not actualized this.
Therefore because this indiuvudual does not carry anything from Islam, Islam
will not protect his life and properties. Thus the hadith mentioned previously
constitutes evidence of this.
Muhammad b Abdulwahab said: “Some do not reject shirk because of not having
knowledge of shirk.”
I say: This person also could not be a muwahhid. To be a muwahhid as he needs
to reject shirk and keep distant from shirk; he also has to keep distant from
ahl shirk and perform takfir of them.  The one who does not recognise shirk can
not achieve that which ‘lailahaillaAllah’ exhibits. Whoever does not behave
according to the meaning this kalimah implicates could not be accounted as
mu’min. In this state it means he is not upon Islam and he does not know
anything from Islam. It is because whoever does not accept and submit to the
meaning kalimah comprises, attesting to its truth while attributing it to ilm
and certainty and thereby holding ikhlas and love foreground; it will mean he
will not have actualized the requirements of the kalimah. These induvuduals are
not upon anything from this deen. Even if they utter the kalimah
‘lailahaillaAllah’ they do not know what this kalimah indicates and comprises.
Muhammad b Abdulwahad stated: “Some do not know tawhid yet do not reject it.”
This is similar to the expression mentioned in the previous paragraph. These
individuals prior to anything do not have knowledge of what to do regarding the
matters which all nabi who had been sent to explain the deen. The stat

Female Muslim medics 'disobey hygiene rules'

ref:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/02/03/nislam403.xml

Muslim medical students are refusing to obey hygiene rules brought in to stop
the spread of deadly superbugs, because they say it is against their religion.

Women training in several hospitals in England have raised objections to
removing their arm coverings in theatre and to rolling up their sleeves when
washing their hands, because it is regarded as immodest in Islam.

Universities and NHS trusts fear many more will refuse to co-operate with new
Department of Health guidance, introduced this month, which stipulates that all
doctors must be "bare below the elbow".

The measure is deemed necessary to stop the spread of infections such as MRSA
and Clostridium difficile, which have killed hundreds.

Minutes of a clinical academics' meeting at Liverpool University revealed that
female Muslim students at Alder Hey children's hospital had objected to rolling
up their sleeves to wear gowns.

Similar concerns have been raised at Leicester University. Minutes from a
medical school committee said that "a number of Muslim females had difficulty
in complying with the procedures to roll up sleeves to the elbow for
appropriate handwashing".

Sheffield University also reported a case of a Muslim medic who refused to
"scrub" as this left her forearms exposed.

Documents from Birmingham University reveal that some students would prefer to
quit the course rather than expose their arms, and warn that it could leave
trusts open to legal action.

Hygiene experts said last night that no exceptions should be made on religious
grounds.

Dr Mark Enright, professor of microbiology at Imperial College London, said:
"To wash your hands properly, and reduce the risks of MRSA and C.difficile, you
have to be able to wash the whole area around the wrist.

"I don't think it would be right to make an exemption for people on any
grounds. The policy of bare below the elbows has to be applied universally."

Dr Charles Tannock, a Conservative MEP and former hospital consultant, said:
"These students are being trained using taxpayers' money and they have a duty
of care to their patients not to put their health at risk.

"Perhaps these women should not be choosing medicine as a career if they feel
unable to abide by the guidelines that everyone else has to follow."

But the Islamic Medical Association insisted that covering all the body in
public, except the face and hands, was a basic tenet of Islam.

"No practising Muslim woman - doctor, medical student, nurse or patient -
should be forced to bare her arms below the elbow," it said.

Dr Majid Katme, the association spokesman, said: "Exposed arms can pick up
germs and there is a lot of evidence to suggest skin is safer to the patient if
covered. One idea might be to produce long, sterile, disposable gloves which go
up to the elbows."

Bismillah [IslamCity] Hamas’ gain, Fatah’s loss By Uriel Heilman

2008-07-01 Thread Erooth Mohamed
*Hamas' gain, Fatah's loss*
*Friday - *Jun 20,2008
http://blogs.jta.org/telegraph/2008/06/20/491/hamas-gain-fatahs-loss/

Israel's new cease-fire agreement with Hamas may be good news in Sderot and
Gaza City, but it's bad news for the Palestinian Authority leadership in
Ramallah.

As if Fatah's routing by Hamas in elections in January 2006 and in a violent
coup in June 2007 weren't enough, now Israel is signing agreements with
Hamas while the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority is, once again, sidelined.
And it doesn't help that P.A. President Mahmoud Abbas is virtually ignored
while Bashar Assad's Syria gets all the attention in Israeli-Arab peace
talks (this week, the possibility of Lebanon-Israel talks even made
headlines).

On Thursday night, Fatah's Kadura Fares talked to Israel's Channel 2 TV
about it, and on Friday Ha'aretz carried a column by Akiva Eldar on the
subject. If Israel wants to strengthen the hands of the moderate Palestinian
leaders, awarding a victory to Hamas extremists and Hamas leader Ismail
Haniyeh (the deposed P.A. prime minister) is not the way to go, the argument
goes. Eldar writes:

Palestinian pollster Dr. Khalil Shikaki said this week at a conference in
Jerusalem that if elections had been held on the day the cease-fire
agreement was finalized, Hamas would have won majority support in both the
Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Shikaki saw the cease-fire agreement as the
reason for this...

For many months, Fatah mocked Hamas by arguing that the Qassam rockets,
which Abu Mazen called "toys," had no effect on Israel and were causing the
people of Gaza unnecessary suffering. And here we discover that the "toys"
are a strategic weapon. Instead of conducting the negotiations through Abu
Mazen and letting him reap the accomplishment, or at least control the
border crossings, Israel has turned Haniyeh into the hero of the hour. And
that is not the end. Now that Hamas has shown that you can get recognition
from Israel without recognizing it yourself, Haniyeh will free the prisoners
that Fatah was unable to free; perhaps even their leader,
Marwan Barghouti.

Bismillah [IslamCity] Al-Ghaflah

2008-07-01 Thread Abu Jumanah
The Disease Of Al-Ghaflah [1]

Bismillaahi walhamdulillaahi was-salaatu was-salaamu 'alaa rasoolilaah wa 'alaa
aalihi wa sahbihi wa sallam, 'amma ba'd:

The disease of al-ghaflah – to be in a state of neglecting your duty to Allaah
(subhaanahu wa ta'aala) is a disease that many, many people, unfortunately, of
the Ummatul-Islaam have fallen into. It is to be in a state of forgetting the
Day that you will be questioned by Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala). The Day He
will ask you for the big and the small, the good and the wrong, the halaal and
the haraam, the correct and the mistake – everything will be asked of you by
Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala).

We begin by warning myself and yourselves not to be from those who are in a
state of ghaflah. Allaah says:

"Draws near for mankind their reckoning, while they turn away in heedlessness.
Comes not unto them an admonition (a chapter of the Qur'aan) from their Lord as
a recent revelation but they listen to it while they play, With their hearts
occupied (with evil things).." [Al-Anbiyaa' (21) 1-3]

Many of the Muslim Ummah, they listen to the Qur'aan and their eyes will never
shed tears, not once, living their whole life listening to the word of Allaah
and not once in their life will they shed a tear from the fear of Allaah.
Muslims will live their whole life listening to the ahadeeth and the Sunnah of
Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and their hearts will never be moved:
"their hearts occupied.." with other things.

But the actual danger is not that the heart is pre-occupied but the danger is
that there are people who know that they are committing mistakes: eating ribaa'
, not praying, they know they are disobeying Allaah but then they look around
themselves and they see that they have cars, they have wealth, a career, an
education, a job, wife, children and he says all of this is ni'mah (a favour)
therefore Allaah is pleased with me but actually it is a test and trial from
Allaah.

The Ulamaa from the Salaf and the Khalaf have said: To be tested by being given
from Allaah's goodness is a harder test for you than for Allaah to remove some
of your goodness. Because when you have wealth, when you have goodness all
around you, you are blinded, you are blinded, you do not actually see that you
are committing sins because you think that Allaah is actually pleased with you
for giving you money, for giving you wealth, for giving you a job, in essence
this is a greater trial than for Allaah to take it from you.

Read the words of Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam):
"If you see that Allaah is giving a person everything that he wishes whilst you
see that that same person is committing a ma'siyah (disobedient act) know that
Allaah is gradually going to bring him to punishment." 2

Allaah is letting the rope go a little, until Allaah cuts it and then Allaah
seizes it. Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) says explaining this Sunnah:
"So, when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded, We
opened to them the gates of every (pleasant) thing, until in the midst of their
enjoyment in that which they were given, all of a sudden, We took them to
punishment, and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and
sorrows." [Al-An'aam (6):44]

And the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said as reported by Abu Musaa
al-Ash'aree (radiyallaahu anhu):
"Verily Allaah, will give an oppressor time to keep committing more oppression
until Allaah seizes him and when Allaah seizes him, he never lets him go" Then
the Messenger recited: "Such is the Seizure of your Lord when He seizes the
(population of) towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is
painful, and severe" [Hud (11):102] [Agreed Upon]

He lets them go until they are in the middle of their enjoyment and then He
brings them to punishment. And listen to the Words Of Allaah where He describes
the people of ghaflah, what are their characteristics, what are their
attitudes, what type of people are they?

"And surely, We have created many of the jinns and mankind for Hell. They have
hearts wherewith they understand not, they have eyes wherewith they see not,
and they have ears wherewith they hear not (the truth). They are like cattle,
nay even more astray; those! They are the (ghaafiloon) heedless ones."
[Al-A'raf (7):179]

And you may ask how can a human being be less than an animal? Have you not
heard Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) where He said:
"See you not that to Allaah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is
on the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the mountains, and
the trees, and Ad-Dawaab (moving living creatures, beasts, etc.), and many of
mankind? But there are many (men) on whom the punishment is justified. And
whomsoever Allaah disgraces, none can honour him. Verily! Allaah does what He
wills." [Al-Hajj (22):18]

So Allaah is telling you the sun, the moon, the mountains, the trees

Parent's respect in Islam

1.. Service to parents result in increase in Rizq (earnings,
livelihood) and in longer life.

2.. A gaze of love and mercy cast at parents is the equivalent of an
accepted Hajj .

3.. Service to parents is superior to jihaad .

4.. By rendering service to parents, one obtains the thawaab of a Hajj
, Umrah and Jihaad .

5.. Jannah lies under the feet of your mother.

6.. Gazing with anger at one's parents is disobedience to parents.

7.. Disobedience to parents is among the Kabaa'ir (major) sins.

8.. He who is disobedient to parents will be disgraced. (The curse of
disgrace is repeated thrice in the Hadeeth).

9.. Abusing parents is among the major sins, even the utterance of a
harsh word or a word of disrespect.

10.. Allah curses the one who displeases his parents.

11.. The one who troubles his parents will be punished here on earth
(in addition to the punishment in the
Aakhirah ).

12.. The one who disobeys his parents and displeases them, will not
enter Jannah. (He will first have to suffer his punishment before
being admitted into Jannah ).

13.. The doors of Jahannam are open for the one who disobeys his parents.

14.. A murderer of parents will be among the worst-punished in the
Aakhirah .

15.. The pleasure of the parents is the pleasure of Allah and the
displeasure of parents is the displeasure of Allah .

16.. Service to parents is among the noblest acts by Allah .

17.. Parents are either the Jannah or the Jahannam of their children.
Cultivation of their pleasure leads to Jannah while displeasing them
paves the way to Jahannam .

18.. A mother's du'aa for her children is accepted with swiftness.

19.. Jibraa'eel alayhis salaam cursed offspring who displease their
parents in their old age.

20.. The best door to Jannah is one's father. Either guard it or
destroy it.

and obedient to parents.
Kindness to parents secures forgiveness for sins.

22.. The calamity of disobeying parents will be experienced before
death as well as after death.

23.. Neither the Fardh nor the Nafl ibaadah is accepted of a person
who is disobedient to his parents.

24.. Among the major sins, the worst is to commit shirk with Allah

sin of disobedience to parents.

Bismillah [IslamCity] I saw a man...

excerpt from 'al-Wabil al-Sayyib' 'The Invocation of God' (p. 107-109)
by Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya

This hadîth from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib from Abd al-Rahman ibn Samra ibn Jundub,
who said that one day as they were seated on the steps of Madinah, the
Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) came out stood before them and
said:

‘I saw something significant last night. I saw a man from my people as the
angel of death came to take his soul. The goodness he had shown his parents
came to him and turned back the angel of death.

I saw a man from my people as the punishment of the grave loomed before him.
His ablution came and rescued him from it.

I saw a man from my people, as devils surrounded him. The remembrance of God
came to him and drove them away.

I saw a man from my people as the angels of punishment surrounded him. His
prayer came to him and saved him from their grips.

I saw a man from my people who was perishing from thirst. Every time he
approached the pond, he was held back and driven away. His fasting during
Ramadhaan came to him, gave him water and quenched his thirst.

I saw a man from my people, and I saw the prophets sitting in circles, one
after another. Each time he approached one of the circles he was driven away.
His greater ablution came to him, took him by the hand and seated him at my
side.

I saw a man from my people when there was darkness before him, behind him, on
his right and on his left, above and beneath him. He moved aimlessly in its
midst. And then his pilgrimages – the lesser and the greater – came to him,
took him out of that darkness and brought him into the light.

I saw a man from my people protecting himself with his hand from the fumes of
the fire and its harm. His charity came to him and shielded him from the fire,
spreading out over his head.

I saw a man from my people who was speaking to the believers, but they were not
speaking to him. Then the good relations he had kept with his relatives came to
him and said, “O assembly of Muslims, this man kept his ties with his
relatives, so speak to him.” And they spoke to him, shook his hand and he shook
theirs.

I saw a man from my people surrounded by the demons of hell. His enjoining
fairness and forbiddance of evil came to him and rescued him from their grip;
they brought him to God Most High.

I saw a man from my people whose right hand had lost the scroll. There came to
him his fear of God Almighty; it took the scroll and placed it in his right
hand.

I saw a man from my people whose scale was light [in good deeds], and there
came to him those members of his family he had lost, and this weighed down the
scale.

I saw a man from my people standing on the brink of Hell, and there cam to him
his hope in God Almighty. It rescued him from Hell and he passed on.

I saw a man from my people who had been put in the fire, and there came to him
tears he had shed in reverent fear of God Almighty. They rescued him from the
Fire.

I saw a man from my people standing on the bridge, tossing about like a palm
tree in a storm. His hope in God came to him. It steaded him and he walked
[across].

I saw a man from my people advancing over the bridge, sometimes crawling,
sometimes clinging to it. The blessings he had invoked upon me came to him. It
set him on his two feet and saved him.

I saw a man from my people who had come to the gates of heaven and found all of
them locked. His testimony – “There is no deity but God” – came to him, opened
the gates for him and led him into heaven.

Battle of Palashy And Capture Of Bengal : Beginning of Colonial Occupation Of
The World

In Bangladesh many organizations have observed Monday the 23rd day of June ,
as Palashy Day, the day in which the English forces commanded by Clive defeated
Sirajuddowla, the independent ruler of Bengal., in the field of Palashy ,now in
west Bengal of India .There was no real fighting as the commander-in- chief of
the army of Sirajuddowla , Mir Zafar Ali Khan , was already won over by bribing
and the army did not act .The British came for trading but gradually made
fortifications and raised armed forces and made plan to take over political
power. The battle in 1757 was the beginning of taking over Bengal, then India by
the Brutishers , first in the name of company then directly.Later the western
powers colinised almost the whole of Asia, Africa ,Latin America and Australia

History has proved it that this was done for basically plundering of the rest
of the world by the European powers of that time.. It was indeed perfidy and
immorality of the highest order.

Sirajuddowla was a young man but he was betrayed by a part of the then business
interest, military generals and officials of his government. It is strange that
moral standard of a part of Bengal elite at that time was so low. This
requires a separate study why it was so. Even now the people in the
sub-continent are suspicious about foreign companies as they may try to take
power in weaker countries in a covered manner .

. The British historians and their admirers made false stories about the
ineptness and character of Siraj. All later studies have shown that it was
nothing but character assassination of Siraj as is the general habit of the
victors to malign the losers.

Siraj is a symbol of resistence against colonialists .Though the day has been
observed in many places with due spirit we have been dismayed by almost
blackout of its news a number of well-known dailies. Only a few newspapers have
covered it properly. This is bad and motivated journalism. What is the purpose
of not properly presenting or blacking out this event. It is nothing except
political motivation. Those who love independence of Bangladesh can not

"A hitherto largely unknown Turkish Islamic scholar, Fethullah Gülen,
has been voted the world's top intellectual in a poll to find the leading 100
thinkers, reported Guardian.
Gülen, the author of more than 60 books, won a landslide triumph after the
survey - which is organised by the British magazine, Prospect, and Foreign
Policy, a US publication - attracted more than 500,000 votes. The top 10
individuals were all Muslim and included two Nobel laureates, the novelist
Orhan Pamuk, who is also Turkish, at No 4, and the Iranian human rights lawyer
Shirin Ebadi, in 10th."

The World’s Top 20 Public Intellectuals

July/August 2008
Rankings are an inherently dangerous business. Whether offering a hierarchy
of countries, cities, or colleges, any such list—at least any such list worth
compiling—is likely to generate a fair amount of debate. In the last issue,
when we asked readers to vote for their picks of the world’s top public
intellectuals, we imagined many people would want to make their opinions known.
But no one expected the avalanche of voters who came forward. During nearly
four weeks of voting, more than 500,000 people came to ForeignPolicy.com to
cast ballots.
Such an outpouring reveals something unique about the power of the men and
women we chose to rank. They were included on our initial list of 100 in large
part because of the influence of their ideas. But part of being a “public
intellectual” is also having a talent for communicating with a wide and diverse
public. This skill is certainly an asset for some who find themselves in the
list’s top ranks. For example, a number of intellectuals—including Aitzaz
Ahsan, Noam Chomsky, Michael Ignatieff, and Amr Khaled—mounted voting drives by
promoting the list on their Web sites. Others issued press releases or gave
interviews to local newspapers. Press coverage profiling these intellectuals
appeared around the world, with stories running in Canada, India, Indonesia,
Qatar, Spain, and elsewhere.
No one spread the word as effectively as the man who tops the list. In early
May, the Top 100 list was mentioned on the front page of Zaman, a Turkish daily
newspaper closely aligned with Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen. Within hours,
votes in his favor began to pour in. His supporters—typically educated,
upwardly mobile Muslims—were eager to cast ballots not only for their champion
but for other Muslims in the Top 100. Thanks to this groundswell, the top 10
public intellectuals in this year’s reader poll are all Muslim. The ideas for
which they are known, particularly concerning Islam, differ significantly. It’s
clear that, in this case, identity politics carried the day.
  FETHULLAH GÜLEN
  Religious leader • Turkey
An Islamic scholar with a global network of millions of followers, Gülen is
both revered and reviled in his native Turkey. To members of the Gülen
movement, he is an inspirational leader who encourages a life guided by
moderate Islamic principles. To his detractors, he represents a threat to
Turkey’s secular order. He has kept a relatively low profile since settling in
the United States in 1999, having fled Turkey after being accused of
undermining secularism.

  MUHAMMAD YUNUS
  Microfinancier, activist • Bangladesh
More than 30 years ago, Yunus loaned several dozen poor entrepreneurs in his
native Bangladesh a total of $27. It was the beginning of a lifetime devoted to
fighting poverty through microfinance, efforts that earned him a Nobel Peace
Prize in 2006. Over the years, his Grameen Bank, now operating in more than 100
countries, has loaned nearly $7 billion in small sums to more than 7 million
borrowers—97 percent of them women. Ninety-eight percent of the loans have been
repaid.

 YUSUF AL-QARADAWI
  Cleric • Egypt/Qatar
The host of the popular Sharia and Life TV program on Al Jazeera, Qaradawi
issues w .eekly fatwas on everything from whether Islam forbids all consumption
of alcohol (no) to whether fighting U.S. troops in Iraq is a legitimate form of
resistance (yes). Considered the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood,
Qaradawi condemned the September 11 attacks, but his pronouncements since, like
his justification of suicide attacks, ensure his divisive reputation.

 ORHAN PAMUK
  Novelist • Turkey
Part political pundit, part literary celebrity, Pamuk is the foremost
chronicler of Turkey’s difficult dance between East and West. His skillfully
crafted works lay bare his native country’s thorny relationship with religion,
democracy, and modernity, earning him a Nobel Prize in literature in 2006.
Three years ago, Pamuk was put on trial for “insulting Turkish identity” after
mentioning the Armenian genocide and the plight of T
