My only excursion into bridal lace was a hanky edging. It was a NEW work, from an OLD pattern, the Bucks version of Little Danish Hearts that the English BORROWED from the Tonder, using a BLUE gimp. Ironically, I didn't know the woman well enough to be willing to spend a lot of money on a present for her, but was totally consumed by BL and didn't mind spending the time to make her a lace handkerchief. Ina, What a fantastic idea that is. I will remember that for the future. I am going to lend the bride a handkerchief made in Bedfordshire/Cluny style to carry but on loan only so that all the brides within the family can borrow it when their turn comes. I made that in class at the beginning of my 2nd year of lessons in 2003, it has never been out of its tissue paper yet. Sue T To the looong lace ladies, I have often made garters for relatives and friends and on completion admired my handiwork. However when I think of the fate of the garters, I make another from bought lace. I clearly label each garter, as the garters are usually for non-lacemakers who wouldn't know the difference, then I give both garters to the bride to be. In Australia, part of the wedding ritual is for the bridegroom to remove the garter at the wedding breakfast and hurl it into the midst of the wedding guests. I don't mind the machine made lace garter being thrown away so long as the hand made lace is preserved for prosperity. Pat Milne's Torchon garter in Orange Blossom design makes up well with a blue gimp and blue ribbon for the 'something blue' in the wedding rhyme. Re: [lace] looong lace blog
Hi Bev and Everyone, What a beautiful site! I love the Bucks pattern. I've been doing very little yardage or edgings lately, and feel inspired to work a little point ground again. I'd love to hear more about your lovely pattern. Was it also parchment? Or is it crumb-apart card? Thank you for sharing your work with us! I have just published my first blog, simply with a picture of the lace in progress and a few words. Go here to see the l.i.p. http://www.looonglace.blogspot.com/ Choosing a site name was tricky because long lace on its own wasn't suitable, and longlace didn't look right either, so we have l-o-o-o-ng lace for a really long lace, and it reads more like 'looon glace' - easy to remember anyway. -- bye for now Bev in Sooke BC (on Vancouver Island, west coast of Canada) Cdn. floral bobbins www.woodhavenbobbins.com - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Relax. Re: [lace] looong lace blog
Bev, I love the chopsticks idea. That lace pattern is very similar to what I did. It may be too late for you know, but if you tied the passive thread, or even thread the chopstock thru at the top you should be able to eliminate the pulling of the passives, for the most part, I found that when I did pull the passives too hard I was able to smooth the lace out without any problem. Actually the chopsticks look perfect for the ribbon insertion because you could firmly attach the ribbon, and elastic, before starting.
