[leaf-devel] Wireless Community Networks

2003-07-25 Thread Mike Noyes
Everyone,
Have we been able to package NoCatSplash yet? I think wireless community
networks are going to grow considerably in the future.

[leaf-devel] Addendum to "Q&D LRP package how-to"

2003-07-25 Thread Jon Clausen
http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=1460&group_id=13751

Section 5:

"Trick" LRP into thinking your package is installed by editing
/var/lib/lrpkg/packages, and adding your package name to the bottom of the
list. The name here should match the portion of the files you
created earlier, and will be what your LRP package is backed up as. If you
are using apkg instead, then you can skip this step.

Section 6:

You are now ready to ``create'' your LRP package. Just do a backup of your
package from lrcfg and you will have .lrp created for you on your
disk drive. If you don't have a backup option for your package, you didn't
do step 5 correctly.

Problem is, step 5 is not enough if you're working on Bering:

One also has to declare the package in the file /var/lib/lrpkg/backdisk in
order for the package to show up in lrcfg.

So I'd suggest adding something like the following to Section 5;

"Note that if you're working on Bering, you also have to declare your new
package in /var/lib/lrpkg/backdisk, which controls the destination of the
packages. Follow the syntax of the other lines in there."

- or something to that effect.

I should mention that the above is something I noticed while making a
package on Bering 1.0_rc2 (I think), and I haven't checked whether it still
holds true on later releases...

CMIIW

Cheers,
Jon Clausen

I can't help much, but you might want to ask on the busybox list. There
are frequent questions/problems with halt/reboot support in busybox,
especially when running on various embedded systems.
Thanks for the info. I might dig a bit in the busybox site.
The developer of the WRAP system suggests to use the SC1100 watchdog to
reboot the system without even thinking about the keyboard controller. I
quite like the idea because the built in HW watchdog strobes the reset line
when not reset, this would make it a fine recovery should Bering ever freeze.

Thanks

Erich

RE: [leaf-devel] LEAF Platform

2003-07-25 Thread Erich Titl
Mohan. List

At 08:45 25.07.2003 +0530, S Mohan wrote:
Eric:

init 6 invokes reboot with the arguements, is it? or giving reboot -d -f -i
does the job without keyboard controller?
I had a look at the reboot (halt) code..

-i forces the network interfaces down by issuing an ifdown call
-f forces a hard shutdown but does not really anything significant in the code
-d inhibits writing of a wtmp record
none of these have anything to do with the actual reboot system call, so no
luck.

looking at the code the follwing is apparent

reboot is called with the magic 0x01234567 which according to the docs
should result in

LINUX_REBOOT_CMD_RESTART
  (RB_AUTOBOOT, 0x1234567).  The message  `Restarting
  system.' is printed, and a default restart is per-
  formed immediately. If not preceded by a sync(2),
  data will be lost.
digging deeper into the kernel this finally goes to process.c which tries
to reset.

this is from process.c..

if(!reboot_thru_bios) {
/* rebooting needs to touch the page at absolute addr 0 */
*((unsigned short *)__va(0x472)) = reboot_mode;
for (;;) {
int i;
for (i=0; i<100; i++) {
kb_wait();
udelay(50);
outb(0xfe,0x64); /* pulse reset low */
udelay(50);
}
/* That didn't work - force a triple fault.. */
__asm__ __volatile__("lidt %0": :"m" (no_idt));
__asm__ __volatile__("int3");
}
}
machine_real_restart(jump_to_bios, sizeof(jump_to_bios));

the call to kb_wait() seems to indicate that in the case of a hard reboot
(!reboot_thru_bios) the keyboard plays a role.

If anyone has a deeper insight what exactly this system call will do please
holler.

Thanks

Erich
