Saturday, 13th October, 11am at Preston Market (Melways Melways map 18 G11) Murray Road side, in the space between Coles supermarket and the Market, outside Speciality Meats and the Party Supplies Shop **Local mother and Greens candidate for Batman in the upcoming federal election, Alex. Women and children speakers needed especially in languages other than English (Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Vietnamese) - people to read aloud case studies and a child or young person who can read selections from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. # This will be a small, calm event, in a public space. Toilets, food and drinks close by. # It will last for approximately half an hour. # Please explain to your child that we are 'acting' the imprisonment. # Care will be taken to make sure it's a positive experience for all involved: at the end, the "detention centre" will be theatrically closed down and the detainees released into the care and support of the community, just as we would like to see!). # If this event is successful, we intend to use mock imprisonment of women and children repeatedly in the Federal election campaign, to draw public attention to the plight of families in the detention centres. There are hundreds of children in Immigration Detention Centres around Australia. They live in cramped and highly stressful conditions - they live in prisons! At Maribyrnong, children go to school in armoured vehicles, escorted by armed security guards. They have no contact outside of school hours with their school-mates. LL:DDV: WTO meeting in 1 month - time to get active!
The World Trade Organisation will be meeting in Doha, Qatar, on November 9-13. So the Friends of the Earth Trade Campaign's having a meeting to talk about what we're going to do - information, demos, wacky costumes, direct action...? If you're interested, come along - we only need you for a month! The meeting will be pretty short, very interactive and provide you with the information and resources to get more involved in stopping the WTO and ensuring real global justice. Tuesday October 16, 6:30pm at Friends of the Earth, 312 Smith Street Collingwood. For more info call FoE on 9419 8700. In November, the world's richest governments are aiming to expand the WTO and push ahead with the GATS negotiations. The beneficiaries will be multinational corporations while the losers will be communities and the environment, particularly those that at the margins - women in sweatshops, indigenous peoples and workers in the South. The tragedy of September 11 has the potential to spur a rethink of corporate globalisation. Unfortunately the world's most powerful governments are using the tragedy to push ahead with liberalisation through the WTO. More free trade will have one effect - increased power to corporations and increased inequality in a world where the richest countries have 72 times more wealth than the poorest. There is an alternative - and it starts with stopping the WTO. A safe world is a fair world. Say no to the wto and no to expanding it's agenda. - help keep FoE active - give a tax-free donation - Friends of the Earth Melbourne (Australia) PO Box 222 Fitzroy 3065 312 Smith St Collingwood Phone: (03) 9419 8700 Fax: (03) 9416 2081 (International: tel. +61 (3) 9419 8700; fax +61 (3) 9416 2081) www.melbourne.foe.org.au -- Leftlink - Australia's Broad Left Mailing List mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archived at http://www.cat.org.au/lists/leftlink/ Sponsored by Melbourne's New International Bookshop Subscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=subscribe%20leftlink Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20leftlink
LL:DDV: Latin Fiesta
Dear Friend and Comrades, We are the Chilean Popular and Indigenous Network. We are a non-profitable community group who works in solidarity with the Indigenous community and grass-root Organisations in Latin America, focuses on Chile during 2001. We have been actively working since 1994; one of our important objectives is distribute current information about the indigenous communities, social and political events in Latin America that are relevant for the Australian and Latin American communities. We carry out this task by publishing an informative bulletin every two months. Our activities are funded by its own members and any money raised is sent to the Chilean Indigenous community to support the two projects that we have been supporting since 2000. We also support political prisoners and their families, Independent trade union movement in Chile. We proudly support any struggle in Australia that supports human and Indigenous rights. In this moment we are supporting with all our effort and possibilities the current campaign to stop the injustice war against poor nations, such as Afghanistan, we must react to this action carried out by rich countries which has the only objective to dominate the people and bring us a new kind of world where exploitation and barbaric society will take in place by Globalise Capitalism, the only thing we have and must do is to oppose it, enough is enough. Finally we would like to extend a warm invitation to our activity. "Fiesta Latina" Solidarity Latin Dance", with 7 pieces live latin band "banana 6" will take place on: Saturday 20th October, 7 PM at Brunswick Town Hall. 233 Sydney Rd, Brunswick,Solidarity night with a Hospital of Indigenous people of Chile, and also with the 2002 Latin American Solidarity Conference. LL:DDV: Anti War Rally this Saturday OCT 13 2pm Arts Centre Foyer
STOP NUCLEAR MISSILE DEFENCE CLOSE PINE GAP NO TO WAR Victorian Arts Centre Foyer 100 St Kilda Rd Melbourne then marching to the US Consulate 553 St Kilda Road GLOBAL NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT A NUCLEAR FREE AUSTRALIA NO TO RACISM NO NEW NUCLEAR ARMS RACE October 13 is the international day of action against nuclear missile defence. This mad plan by the US has committed 130 billion dollars to a plan that cant prevent nuclear attack. It will not stop nuclear terrorism. In light of this Nuclear Free Australia has initiated this rally. Never has a nuclear free Australia been more important. There is little doubt that Australian Uranium is being used in depleted uranium being dumped on Afghanistan. The global positioning system, of which the US base in Australia, Pine Gap is part of, is being used to pinpoint and guide the bombing in Afghanistan. Lets not mince words this makes every Australian a terrorist target. The Australian government is one of the most enthusiastic supporters of NMD. In order to overwhelm any US missile shield countries like China and Russia will develop new and more powerful weapons that can evade detection. This can only lead to a new nuclear arms race. We must begin to mobilise against Australia's participation in the entire nuclear industry and our all the way with George W approach when it comes to US wars and US desire for absolute military superiority over the whole globe. LL:DDV: OCAA Corporate Responsibility Forum, 22 October
--- PUBLIC FORUM The Corporate Code of Conduct Bill is Dead. Where to Now?? --- 6.30pm - 9pm Monday 22nd Oct Storey Hall Lecture Theatre, RMIT corner Swanston & La Trobe streets, Melbourne Gold coin donation Light refreshments provided Globalisation is greatly increasing contact between the North and South via the private sector - contact which can either undermine the rights and livelihoods of local communities or make a positive contribution to poverty reduction, depending on how it is regulated. For some years, Oxfam Community Aid Abroad has been part of the push for internationally accepted environmental, human rights and labour standards to be imposed on Australian businesses, such as mining companies, operating overseas. One potential example of such standards is the Corporate Code of Conduct Bill 2000, which was introduced into the Senate in September 2000 by the Australian Democrats, but failed to win the support of the ALP or Coalition. So now that the Bill is dead, where to from here? This public forum will provide an opportunity to hear from representatives from the major parties about their position on corporate responsibility, and to ask how they propose to take the issue forward, should they win Government at the forthcoming election. A panel of NGO representatives will lead questioning of the speakers and help to tease out the key issues for discussion. --- SPEAKERS - Senator Barney Cooney, ALP - Senator Lyn Allison, Democrats - Senate Candidate Scott Kinnear, Greens - Representative from The Liberal Party --- PANEL DISCUSSION - with NGO, Union and Industry representatives --- DETAILS 6.30pm - 9pm Monday 22nd Oct Storey Hall Lecture Theatre, RMIT corner Swanston & La Trobe streets, Melbourne Gold coin donation Light refreshments provided --- This forum is part of a series of public forums being run by OCAA as part of its Vote Global campaign, being implemented in the lead- up to the election on 10 November. OCAA is urging voters and politicians to "think outside their own backyards" on issues such as Australia's treatment of asylum seekers, overseas aid, Indigenous rights, third world debt, human rights, the UN, corporate responsibility and fair trade.
