Re: [LegacyUG] A little off topic but...

2006-11-14 Thread Michele Lewis
I have been around a long time so microfilm is the word that pops out of my
mouth :) I would want the papers to be treated in the best manner possible.
I just want an agreement from the people that I turn the papers over to that
they will make the entire collection available to repositories free of
charge so that everyone has access to them in whichever way is best :)

A small point but important.

I'm sure that when you said 'microfilmed' you meant archived; I say
that because thank goodness we have now moved into the days of hi-res
scans rather than microfilm. The Scottish archive centre has just got
a book scanner, and sent me recently a copy of an ancestor's will from
1819 - full color, A3, and a resolution to die for!

This is the sort of kit I am talking about:-

Re: [LegacyUG] A little off topic but...

2006-11-13 Thread Candi

Hi Alastair,

I personally was very impressed by this, thank you for sharing this
info. I have some very important books that are very old that need to
be scanned. This is the best option I have seen so far. Can you tell
me where I might find one of these to purchase and maybe the price ?
These are books being held by a historical society that they have
granted me permission to copy.

Most Sincerely,
Candi DeGrande

[LegacyUG] A little off topic but...

2006-11-11 Thread Michele Lewis

We are buying a genealogist's dream of a house in
Maine! It was built in 1830 and is in PERFECT condition. Here is the
best part... The current owner is giving me ALL of the treasures he found
in the attic when he pulled up the boards to put in insulation.

He found TINTYPE photos of the orginal
owners! He found the wife's Bible! He found newspapers from the
1830s and 1840s! The original owner of the house was the founder of the
Piscataquis Observer which started printing 168 years ago :)

He is giving me these things because he knows I
will cherish them. He researched the house and the original family and I
am thrilled to know all about it and I am doubly thrilled to have these
treasures.

So, are you going to try and locate the descendants and give those precious
items to them?
