[LUTE] Re: A question; straps, standing
Thank you for this Markus. I don't have notes on this possible mandora instrument. 9 course mandoras are certainly known - although not as early as 1730. Is there any further information/photos of the instrument? Incidentally, what would be even more interesting was if there were any fragments of old strings still on the instruments - are you aware of any? regards Martyn --- On Wed, 17/10/12, Markus Lutz wrote: From: Markus Lutz Subject: [LUTE] Re: A question; straps, standing To: "Lute Mailing List" Cc: "Mark Probert" , "Joshua Horn" Date: Wednesday, 17 October, 2012, 11:45 Hello, in the Stift Kremsmuenster they have 6 lutes (5x11-course lutes and 1x 9-course lutes - mandora?), that had been left quite unchanged since about 1730. All of them have 2 strap buttons, so they had been used with straps most probably! I seem to remember that lutes were used in courtly manifestations (processions i.e. "Entrée de luths") where a large number of lute players were walking and playing. In medieval and renaissance paintings lute players are often shown playing while standing up. Then there also are a number of pics where lutes are being played by courting men walking side by side with their loved ones. Cheers!
