[LUTE] Re: antiqua (guatemala) vihuela manuscript
Not sure if this message went to the Lutelist as well as the vihuela list.. I have what appears to be a study of this manuscript in Spanish which someone - I think an Internet friend in Spain - sent me some time ago. I have never got around to reading it but a quick look now suggests that it is about the 5-course guitar - including setting out the chords according to Amat's system. And why not? The vihuela deosn't have to be a vihuela. I could if anyone wants to look at it try posting it on my ning page. I have spent a bit more time looking at it and it appears to be someone's doctoral dissertation. The first part is about the vihuela and guitar in general. The second is a transcript of the manuscript. It is definitely about the 5-course guitar and some of it looks as if it might have been adapted from Minguet y Irolor from whatever Minguet adopted his book from. They have a tiny museum containing old manuscrips and books which were printed in 16th and 17th century in quatemala. Among the books shown there were 4 books containing music and one manuscript where the description mentioned that it was about vihuela tuning. 23 pages following were to contain religious music. Of course it would have been nice if this manuscript contains vihuela tablature, but the museum description didn't mention this, although it looks like that the music was intended to be played on vihuela. Unfortunately there was nobody available to provide more information. I made 2 pictures of the pages and will put them on a website this week. Anybody more info about this book? Actually I quite liked it! Amazing what you find on You tube - I went on to listen to Aranes Ciaccona played by massed recorders. ( [3]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xMLFCrEwno ) The recording is terrible, but you might be able to get in touch with Deiter Lenhof directly through this webite: [4]http://www.composers21.com/compdocs/lehnhofd.htm He is very knowledgeable and approachable on the subject Early Music in the Americas and particularly in Guatemala. I'm sure that he would be delighted to talk you. Azalais On Mon, Jul 19, 2010 at 8:52 AM, Monica Hall [5]mjlh...@tiscali.co.uk wrote: Well folks believe it or not...
