Go figure, I don't have an iPad. I don't think I'll be able to get one. :-( I
wonder if textbooks will someday be available on the iPhone. what about on the
Mac?

Accessible textbook content and free iPad and iPhone App Development book [was Re: Adobe Digital Editions Question.]

2012-11-28 Thread Esther
Hi Josh,

I'm pretty sure Adobe Digital Editions wouldn't work with shockwave files,
which are flash-based. Adobe Digital Editions Preview is designed for eBook
formats (PDF or ePub) which have Adobe's ADE DRM. Shockwave files don't
necessarily have any DRM, to my knowledge, but are flash-based players.
They're sometimes used to illustrate educational material. Since Adobe doesn't
support any accessibility hooks for playing its flash content on a Mac, I'm not
sure how usable this will be. You'd have to download the most current version
of Adobe's flash player for the Mac, and I'm not sure that you could navigate
to the controls. By contrast Adobe Digital Editions Preview has nothing to do
with flash content.

I'm hopeful that the new iPad based textbook material will be able to replace
shockwave content for education. One of the reasons I've been tracking the
iPad iOS usage is that the iPad has been targeted for the development of
textbook applications by Publishers, and early inputs from VoiceOver users has
worked to keep these accessible. Even though a particular textbook may not
have graphical information, a publisher is simply not going to invest in
large-scale textbook efforts for iOS if the platform doesn't accommodate all
the textbook material he wants to make available. (I can't imagine a publisher
deciding that it's economically worthwhile to selectively leave out textbooks
with pictures for biology, anatomy, and the medical sciences, just in order to
put some restricted subset of his textbook content onto the iPhone.) I know
that some iPad developers, such as Inkling, have brought over Psychology texts
onto the iPad. Incidentally, Inkling also partnered with the Frommer's travel
guides to bring out travel guide apps for the iPad with retina graphics support
when the third generation iPads came out. I was pleasantly shocked to find out
that these guides were entirely accessible --- all the photographs and images
were tagged with descriptions of their content. They're not the only textbook
publishers on the iPad platform.

As another example that interactive textbook content can be accessible. I'll
note there is a recently announced free book to go along with the free Stanford
University course on "iPad and iPhone Application Development" taught by Paul
Hegarty and available through iTunes U. The free book of the same name has
material that complements the course, and is available for download from
iBooks. (The book can only be viewed in iBooks 2 or later using an iPad that
is running iOS 5.0 or later.) It appears to be accessibile, though I've only
read through the first bits.

Here are the relevant links, if anyone is interested:
• The iTunes U course on "iPad and iPhone Application Development" by Paul
Hegarty, Stanford University, Fall 2011
https://itunes.apple.com/us/itunes-u/ipad-iphone-application-development/id473757255
• The free iBook by Daniel H. Sternberg supplementing the same course (iPad
only)
https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/ipad-iphone-app-development/id572052683?mt=11

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Typing & spelling apps.

2012-11-28 Thread Danny Noonan
Hi all. Being recently unemployed for the first time in over a decade, I'm back
to school next year whilst searching out employment. With this in mind, there
are several things that will help me with this.

I have an affliction that many VIP's suffer from although mine is a very bad
case. I am an atrocious speller and always have been. Is there either on Mac OS
or iOS, any app that could help me improve my spelling? I do know about spell
check, I use it when I have the time but the drawback, esp on a stupid pc is
that it takes so much time and in a classroom or office environment, the time
correcting can and should be used to complete other tasks.

Secondly, is there any speed typing app for Mac OS that is VO friendly? I want
to be able to test my speed and accuracy so as to improve and to be able to put
correct stats in my Resumes etc.

All the rest of the things I need to know regard the fact that I have to do
these certificates on pc's so now have to find out about JFW, Office and all
that horrible stuff all over again. Back to using VO shortcuts in windows all
over again.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jim,

No, it's not currently possible to read line-by-line in Adobe Digital Editions
Preview. However, you can use VO-Shift-C to copy the contents of the current
page to clipboard, and then paste into TextEdit, where you can read the copied
contents line-by-line, or use any of the other VoiceOver reading options.

HTH. Cheers,

Re: Walgreen's App problem

2012-11-28 Thread Glenn
Hi Jeff,
I just updated my apps, and now the buttons seem to work.
I do a scan, but it does not find the Walgreen's barcode, or QR code, nor
does the 2x button find anything off the prescription container.

When I double-tap on the button, it does nothing.
It is that way for all the buttons.
I even went into page two, and tried to open settings, and nothing happened

Hi Glenn,

Initially it didn't work on my 64GB 4S either -- from a VO perspective, it
appeared to hang on a blank screen. After clearing all items from the task
switcher, and restarting my phone, I can now use the two features of
interest to me which are the weekly add and shopping list.

Hi All,
I have an iPhone 5, and I have the Walgreen's pharmacy app installed.
I originally installed it on my iPhone 4, and it worked on that phone.
I ported all my apps via iTunes onto my new phone, so it was not installed
directly to the iPhone 5.
I only mention this because I don't believe this to be the problem.
I am wondering if anyone else has the Walgreen's pharmacy app and have
gotten it to work lately?
I suspect that Walgreen's updated it since I originally got it and caused
it

to not work with VoiceOver.
All of the buttons are labeled as before, but double-tapping on them does
not work.
Thanks for any feedback.
Glenn

Re: Tavles: Serious bug with Voiceover

2012-11-28 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

David,

Frankly even in Bean, I can't read tables. Not only can't I read them in
Bean, I can't even create them! The dialog that lets me do so is really
strange. When I open it, I try either with the stepper, or with manually
typing into the text box the number of rows I need in the table. As soon as
I do, everything including the rows box I just tried typing into gets
dimmed. Not only that, but the row text box where I typed in that I
wanted... say... 3 rows, not only gets dimmed along with everything else,
but even odder, it resets itself to 0 rows, and basically sets all other
values as well to 0. It's totally! cockeyed! I don't get it!

Thank you kindly,

Christopher-Mark Gilland.

This is, unfortunately, one of the reasons why I have not been able to
move
completely from Windows to a Mac environment. Support from Voiceover here
is

frankly dreadful. As I understand it this is a long running issue which
Apple has failed to fix.

There are various clunky workarounds including using the Numbers
spreadsheet

to read your tables, and using service commands to open the table and read
it in Text Edit. I also found that there is sometimes some basic reading
support for Tables in the free Bean Word Processor.

This is OK for the occasional table but if you have to seriously handle
and

read tables on a consistent basis with full title and row header reading
support, I do not think there is a viable Mac solution at the moment. For
example I am currently conducting a disciplinary investigation which
involves receiving multiple pages of evidence, many of which contain
audit
and other data in table format. My only practical way of handling this is
to

return to windows.

Safari can handle tables pretty well so I am sure it could be technically
achieved. It is a shame really and is so essential for serious work I
cannot

understand why Apple have not addressed this rather than focussing on the
latest visual effect.

Hello.
I am hoping that someone from Mac-Access can help me.

I have been writing a document in Pages regarding a few topics which I am
researching. One of the things that I need to accomplish is to insert a
table into my document. I have correctly inserted the table at the
position

of my insertion point, and then proceeded to enter the table's data. I am
determining however that Voiceover is refusing to read anything within the
table area. If I use my arrow keys to navigate through the document, I
only

hear "new line" when the table is found.

I have attempted using VO+R as well as VO+Command+C in order to better
understand where I am located in the table. I have also tried tabbing and
Shift+tabbing through the document, in hope of finding something
identifiable. Finally, I have even tried pressing CTRL+Command+T to move
to

the next table. This presented no success.

I have attempted to create tables with Pages as well as with Text Edit and
have experienced this strange behavior using both applications. Any help
with this issue would be appreciated. Have a pleasant day.

Cordially,
Chris Gilland.
