Re: Question about GarageBand and other music editing software

2018-11-20 Thread Likidefs
I finally managed to download Main Stage 3 and it seems that it’s what I was
looking for. Bro it’s too expensive for hobbyist like me, and GarageBand it’s
too poor on instrument choices.
Right now I’m using GarageBand with more instrument options and at the same
time trying to figure out how much accessible it is Main Stage 3 with voiceover.
Thank you all for your help.

That's right apple gets you by over charging you anyways. So they are
not really all out for the customer either. All these companies have
an end game I suppose. I would choose Amazon or google in the smart
speaker space or even sonos. Besides you can always hook them up to a
nice surround sound system, so I am not overly stressed about the
sound they put out. If I buy a smart speaker I want it to be smart and
come at a good price. Maybe I am just thinking as someone that doesn't
come from a place of just being able to drop the big bucks.

accuracy is near 100% in terms of it correctly hearing what I want it

Homepod software is steadily improving, but still not as capable as,

 want
her to do, but can't actually do it. Saying that, Google doesn't hear
 me

Phone calls, messages, calendars, reminders work well now, but only for
one user, which will be a significant shortcoming in a family

 I'm sure.
Hope this helps a little bit,

 Hi all,
This coming Black Friday, there’s going to be a serious discount on the
HomePod speaker from Apple at Best Buy. I am thinking about getting a
 pair
of those in an effort for overall down sizing. I have currently a nice
stereo set up, but it’s rather old, although the speakers are still
wonderful. I’m just curious what peoples impressions are of the
 HomePod,
especially as a stereo pair in a moderate sized living room, as well as
how it works otherwise. Siri, phone calls, etc.

Re: 8-dot Mode under iOS 12

2018-11-20 Thread David Chittenden
All braille displays work the same under iOS in 8-dot mode. Basically,
brailling is in computer braille. Therefore, upper case letters have dot 7
included in the symbol. For instance, a is dot 1, whilst upper case A is dots 1
7. All punctuation follows the computer braille punctuation, and numbers are
their own dot combinations.

Re: likely silly apple product buy question?

2018-11-20 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Depends. Apple products tend to have a very small markup. That's not to say
that Apple doesn't make bags of money from there hardware, just that other
retailers don't make a huge profit either. That being said, third party
venders like BestBuy and such will often put Apple products on sale at a bit of
a loss because they wish to get rid of product. They make enough money off of
other things and sell the occasional warranty package that really makes them
cash. So, yes, you're correct that you'll often see some pretty good sales
during this time of the year on Apple products mostly from folks other than
Apple themselves.

the last Ipad with standard headphone jacks?

2018-11-20 Thread Karen Lewellen

Hi folks,
Question part two.
Please feel free to correct my ideas here, with solid alternatives based on
what I outline as things about which I cannot compromise.
First, I have an iPhone 5 ish, that I have yet to find a way to use truth
be told. I believe though I may have found, based on my specific needs, a
possible quality voice. Whatever Apple item I get will need to manage
some programs that I feel are not available for the mac. Symphony pro for
example, voice dream reader too, for the reading quality. I will be
adding a full sized keyboard, and because the ability to burn items to
cd is an absolute necessity, an external drive I already own.

From what I understand that means an IPad.
So two questions. First how is Audible with the IPad? My goal here are
the more presentation related items, audible studio for example. Still as I
will be moving my items elsewhere, the software itself, linking to Amazon,
I hope is solid in IOs?
Second, which is the last IPad model that still has a standard headphone
jack? I cannot compromise on this because of my headphone requirements.
Yes there are adapters, but using one is a last resort, especially how
long lived apple technology is in the long run. after all some here are
using machines from 2010.

Thoughts?

Hi,

You should still be able to get support from Apple. It is an Apple purchase,
albeit from another vender, but the warranty, support and such is still by
Apple. It is usually your serial number that determines whether warranty or
support is available, not the vender from which you purchased the device.

Hope that makes sense.

Re: Using VO on MacAir in Google Docs and classroom

2018-11-20 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I am using Google docs and google classroom.
In my opinion it needs to be fixed because there are some accessibility flaws
that can be quite frustrating.
But if you want to edit a google document you have to open the documents app on
your iphone and press the edit button.
In classroom its impossible but you can choose to open in another app and then
edit.
For example:
I can click on a document in google classroom and select the open in another
app and from there open it in the google docs app.
Its tricky but it can be done with some patience.

Re: Homepod, was Not sure if this is off-topic it does concern Apple product

2018-11-20 Thread John JD Denning
As an IT professional, and someone with an IT security background, I’ll mention
one point that for some reason seems to skate people. Your data, and your
privacy and secured with Apple devices. It is not with either Amazon or Google.
They have a history of flagrant disregard for their customers privacy. Well
actually there customers are the people they sell the data to not the people
purchase their echoes or smart speakers. So for that reason alone I am drawn
towards Apple products. Apple sees me the end-user as a customer they don’t see
me as the product.

Re: Referencing beginning of rows and columns in Numbers

2018-11-20 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

As long as the row and column are configured as Row Headers or Column Headers,
you can use VO-r or VO-c to announce the title of the headers respectively.
I'll assume that you can figure out which command is for the column and row
headers. If they are not, you can set these things under the Table menu when
in Numbers.

Apple Watch Exercise Ring

2018-11-20 Thread Jeff Berwick
Hi all,

I have an Apple Watch and have been quite happy with it. In the summer, it
stopped talking to me, so I had to reset it. The reset went fine, except now
when I exercise for over 30 minutes, and use the Workout app, I don’t get
credit for all my time.

For example, I might turn on the Workout app and walk for 30 minutes, but I
might only get 41% or 71% of my exercise ring. I’m not getting credit for my
full workout.

Does anybody know what I can fix to get my full credit? I know I did it, but
it would be nice if this expense overlord knew it too. ;)

Thx,
Jeff

I guess it depends on your priorities. I personally wouldn't trade the sound

Re: Homepod, was Not sure if this is off-topic it does concern Apple product

2018-11-20 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I guess that's a matter of preference. You can't listen to Apple Music on your
Echo. Sure, you need AirPlay to listen to Apple Music on the HomePod, but you
can. Each smart speaker has its limitations due to proprietary considerations.
If Amazon Music is your preference, then go with the Echo or Dot, if Apple
Music is your preference then go with the HomePod and if Google is your
preference,, then go with the Google Home. No need to qualify the speakers on
those terms. If you wish to qualify or compare on sound quality, then there's
stuff out there to make a point. Other than that, I just see it as an
ecosystem preference.

Ramy,
That article is from 2013. I too went from an iPhone 5 to the 8
plus. I had the 5 for 5 years. I keep things simple. Charge overnight,
which also allows the phone to be backed up. That is it. It makes no
sense to let the phone run down for that is when you really need the
phone in an emergency and, it will fail.

Re: Odd issue trying to read menu on web site

2018-11-20 Thread Karen Lewellen

Christine,
speaking personally, I would make sure to inform management, especially
as you were invited, of the issue.
The way the page looks actually had me wondering if they want to keep
folks from downloading, and editing their menu.
Still again speaking personally, given their brand of quality I would tell
them that you feel less a guest in their establishment because there is
no real inclusion for you.
I admit the site both made me hungry, and reminded me why I miss NYC
sometimes.

Good day all:
I am attempting to read the menu of a restaurant nearby, and although there is
a link which takes me to the menu, I cannot access the contents. A sighted
person told me it is a pop-up, but there is no indication of anything. The web

Help or insight is appreciated.

Re: iTunes layout?

2018-11-20 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Try to change the style of view. For example, when the playlist is selected,
go up to the View menu, down to View As, and right to Playlist. It sounds like
you are currently in the Songs view, so Playlist view may be more what you're
hoping for.

then i see the tracks title.
It’s just something I’ll have to get used to maybe.

Re: Homepod, was Not sure if this is off-topic it does concern Apple product

2018-11-20 Thread 'christopher hallsworth' via MacVisionaries
All,
Try listening to the third generation Echo Dot. The sound quality is as good as
the Homepod in my opinion. Not as bassy, but far better than the previous
generation.
Just my £0.02 worth.

You know, and this is just my opinion, I think people make too much of this.
You can play anything you want on the HomePod, you just go about it
differently. I often play Spotify and Tune-in radio on my HomePod, you just
have to do it by using airplay on your phone.
Cheers,
Donna

Well, if you really don't care that the HomePod is a one trick pony and that it
can only play Apple Music, then go ahead and buy it. I just purchased an Echo
Dot 3 and the sound quality is awesome. Plus I heard that if you buy two of
them, you can get the same stereo quality sound you'd get with the HomePod.

 Hi Mary,
I have a Homepod. I will probably get another. But my impressions of it
are basically the same as all the reviews you'll find if you Google it:
Homepod hardware is absolutely second to none. Sound is fantastic, the
microphones can hear me speaking at normal volume from miles away. Siri
accuracy is near 100% in terms of it correctly hearing what I want it to
 do.
Homepod software is steadily improving, but still not as capable as, say,
Google Assistant. There are still many times where Siri knows what I want
her to do, but can't actually do it. Saying that, Google doesn't hear me
as well as Siri does, so in terms of time wasted, I'd say they're almost
 equal!
Phone calls, messages, calendars, reminders work well now, but only for
one user, which will be a significant shortcoming in a family environment
 I'm sure.
Hope this helps a little bit,
 Matthew

 Hi all,
This coming Black Friday, there’s going to be a serious discount on the
HomePod speaker from Apple at Best Buy. I am thinking about getting a pair
of those in an effort for overall down sizing. I have currently a nice
stereo set up, but it’s rather old, although the speakers are still
wonderful. I’m just curious what peoples impressions are of the HomePod,
especially as a stereo pair in a moderate sized living room, as well as
how it works otherwise. Siri, phone calls, etc.

Re: iTunes layout?

2018-11-20 Thread Matt Turner
Hi, let me see if I can explane this.
So in windows using, NVDA let's say the track number/ name is 01.untitled.
It would read all that at the same time.
With voiceover, I need to vo left, then I see the track number 01, then vo left
then i see the tracks title.
It’s just something I’ll have to get used to maybe.

Generally speaking, I am a big fan of try before you buy when it comes to
speakers. However, the days of really nice set ups where you could do that in
the store dedicated to stereo listening are gone, at least here in this town.
You can go to the store and listen to speakers amidst all the din. But it
doesn’t tell you very much. And I am really leaning towards the HomePods. If it
turns out I don’t like them, I can always take them back to Best Buy.

Hi Krister,

I don't experience that issue. I'm in the U.S. and have English as my default
language on my devices. I have music in Spanish and Italian, and have no
trouble getting those albums to play (though I do anglicize the pronunciation
a bit).
Cheers,

Re: Homepod, was Not sure if this is off-topic it does concern Apple product

2018-11-20 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Mary,

If you consider this option, you may wish to know that Sonnos tracks a lot of
personal information, including your IP address. I've had Sonos speakers for
years and really liked them, but we have stopped using them since they
implemented this practice.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Siri and music.

2018-11-20 Thread Krister Ekstrom
I think it has to do with language. It looks as if Siri has trouble
communicating in multiple languages at the same time, so if you have Siri set
to Swedish for example, it gets confused when suddenly one or more english or
other forreign words are thrown into the mix.
That’s my 2 cents for what it’s worth.

RE: Homepod, was Not sure if this is off-topic it does concern Apple product

2018-11-20 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Mary,

I can’t confirm it but I’m pretty sure that sonos does provide a type of atmos
sound now.

I know they do have a surround sound but can’t remember what it is called in
their system.

Still it’s up to the user what they like when it comes to sound.
I highly recommend try before you buy in the case of speakers.

Good luck.

Hi Simon,
No, I really haven’t thought about using Sonos. I can’t exactly say why, except
that I am always been interested in this sort of three-dimensional sound that
you supposedly got from the HomePod. I don’t think Sonos offers that.

I find the sonos devices excellent for both useage and sound quality.

Mind you we don’t have the home pods here in NZ so I can’t compare.

Hi Mary,

I have a Homepod. I will probably get another. But my impressions of it are
basically the same as all the reviews you'll find if you Google it:

Homepod hardware is absolutely second to none. Sound is fantastic, the
microphones can hear me speaking at normal volume from miles away. Siri
accuracy is near 100% in terms of it correctly hearing what I want it to do.

Homepod software is steadily improving, but still not as capable as, say,
Google Assistant. There are still many times where Siri knows what I want her
to do, but can't actually do it. Saying that, Google doesn't hear me as well as
Siri does, so in terms of time wasted, I'd say they're almost equal!

Phone calls, messages, calendars, reminders work well now, but only for one
user, which will be a significant shortcoming in a family environment I'm sure.

Hope this helps a little bit,

Matthew

Hi all,

This coming Black Friday, there’s going to be a serious discount on the HomePod
speaker from Apple at Best Buy. I am thinking about getting a pair of those in
an effort for overall down sizing. I have currently a nice stereo set up, but
it’s rather old, although the speakers are still wonderful. I’m just curious
what peoples impressions are of the HomePod, especially as a stereo pair in a
moderate sized living room, as well as how it works otherwise. Siri, phone
calls, etc.

Mary
