[MCN-L] Use of Stored Collections survey

2020-12-14 Thread Trilce Navarrete
Dear colleagues,

I would like to invite you to assist in the dissemination of this study:

The Erasmus University Rotterdam in collaboration with the Universitat
Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) - as related to a PhD research -
are conducting a survey on the stored collections of museums across the
world. Knowing that the larger portion of the collections is stored, this
survey will gather data about:
- The type and condition of collections stored;
- The type of storage available; and
- The services provided to access stored collections.

Your participation in this survey will support understanding of the current
practices and challenges faced to increase access to collections,
particularly those currently in storage. Your answers will be kept
anonymous and all results will be reported in aggregated form.

The deadline to send your response is 24 January 2021.

We thank you for taking part in this study.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of the
researchers involved at navarr...@eshcc.eur.nl and laracor...@uic.es.

[MCN-L] Video series of museums

2020-04-03 Thread Trilce Navarrete
Dear all,

Thank you for your magnificent work.

I would like to share with you a project we just finished at my university
to develop a series of 11 videos where we discuss various areas of museums
from an economic perspective. Note many images from various museums are
used as illustration, including the latest Smithsonian collection online,
as well as blogs and other comments that have circulated in this list. Your
work has greatly inspired many examples to present the content.

Here the link to the video related to Digital Museums, you can find the
entire playlist next to it
https://youtu.be/2DR6ki4Yhv0
In a way, this video is already outdated ! I am sure many things have
already fundamentally changed for instance in regards to digital literacy
as this is rapidly increasing (I know from my direct team at work!). It is
promising to imagine the 'good side' of this challenging situation to be
adopted as 'normal practice' in the long-term.

Again, I would like to thank you for the great work - which is being
showcased more than ever !

Wishing you a safe and creative spring

[MCN-L] CfP Provenance of Knowledge CIDOC2018 Sep29-Oct5 Crete

**Call for Paper - EXTENDED DEADLINE**

***NOW OPEN THRU March 14th ***

selection criteria: http://www.cidoc2018.com/call-papers

About the CIDOC 2018 Theme**

Heraklion, the modern capital of Crete, situated about 5 km north of
Knossos, the ancient capital of Minoan Crete, and one of the exceptional
monuments of the Bronze Age, welcomes you to come and enjoy its rich
heritage alongside your participation in the 26th annual CIDOC Conference
of the International Council of Museums in 2018 (CIDOC 2018). This year the
conference, focuses on the topic of *provenance of knowledge*!

Generating and tracing the ‘Provenance of Knowledge’ is a core element of
good practice in documentation and thus, has been chosen as the theme of
CIDOC 2018.

Provenance of Knowledge refers to the attempt to trace the origins of the
information and knowledge about an object, an entity or an idea in order to
reconstruct the whole chain of creation, use, interpretation and
dissemination of the object and our knowledge about it. The ultimate
purpose of this reconstruction is to confirm, illustrate, and validate the
information and knowledge contained in the documentation in order to
facilitate understanding across times and cultures. In this way, it
contributes to scholarly citation in information handling while connecting
all the material evidence kept in museums and other memory institutions.

The possibility to validate and/or disconfirm information and knowledge
held by memory institutions has been greatly aided by the increasing use of
digital technologies in documentation. However, this advancement in
documentation has created new difficulties as the abundance of the
available information makes it difficult to introduce standards and
processes to model and maintain the development and validity of documented
information.

By focusing the issue of provenance of knowledge, the 2018 annual CIDOC
conference aims to support museums by helping deepen our communal knowledge
and understanding of documentation as a means of knowledge preservation,
dissemination and exchange.

We warmly invite you to participate in the conference and to help advance
this important scientific inquiry with your experience and insight. You can
enhance the community’s discussions on the harmonization of the processes
to trace back information by presenting on a wide array of potential topics
focusing on different potential lines of interest:

Theoretical aspects, User experience, Innovative implementations for the
analysis and documentation of information and knowledge.

The overall aim is to work together to produce new insights into the
Provenance of Knowledge in the documentation and memory institution
community considered more broadly. More analytically, the proposed
conference topics are as follows:

· Object information as historical source

· Object documentation and archival resources

· Field research and object documentation

· Oral tradition and witnessing information in connection with objects

· Documentation and interdisciplinarity

· Object documentation and analytical resources

· Provenance of materials and techniques

· Documentation for target groups (e.g. special needs)

· Methods of knowledge verification and documentation of knowledge
revision

· Ethics of provenance of information

· Provenance of knowledge and preservation of referred sources

*About the CIDOC 2018 Theme*

The ‘Provenance of Knowledge’ is a core element of good practice in
documentation and so is the theme of the next ICOM-CIDOC conference, in
Heraklion-Crete-Greece from 29 September to 5 October 2018.

As an essential aspect of documentation, Provenance of Knowledge refers to
the attempt to trace the origins of the information and knowledge about an
object, an entity or an idea in order to reconstruct the whole chain of
creation, use, interpretation and dissemination of relevant information and
knowledge. The ultimate purpose of this reconstruction is to confirm,
illustrate, and validate the information and knowledge contained in the
documentation in order to facilitate understanding across times and
cultures. In this way, it contributes to scholarly citation in information
handling while connecting all the material evidence kept in museums and
other memory institutions.

The validation of information and knowledge has been greatly helped by the
increasing use of digital technologies in documentation. However, this
advancement in documentation has created new difficulties as the abundance
of the available information makes it difficult to introduce standards and
processes to model and maintain the development and validity of documented
information.

The 2018 CIDOC conference aims at supporting museums by deepening the
understanding of documentation as a means of knowledge preservation,
dissemination and exchange.

[MCN-L] Share your data and improve the MCN community

2014-07-24 Thread Trilce Navarrete
Hi everyone
MCN's Metrics and Evaluation's SIG (Special Interest Group) is extremely
interested in the practice of evaluating digital activities. Each fall, the
change-agents of the digital transformation in the cultural sector come
together at MCN's Annual Conference to showcase and share many of the most
innovative digital technology-driven projects and to get inspired by
visions of yet untapped possibilities to further advance the mission of the
institutions in the cultural sector. And while the Annual Conference is
predominantly innovation driven, we find that not enough attention has yet
been given to evaluation.

Research on the sustainability of digital heritage projects has shown that
many technology projects fail to deliver the success they were hyped to
bring while other projects yield little use. So the Metrics and
Evaluation's SIG would like to explore the following question: What is the
recipe for success? And is there a common understanding among cultural
technologists as to what success is?

Successful long-term projects tend to have clear goals, often backed by
digital applications that support such goals (and not the other way
around). In our industry, success seems to be predominantly goal-driven.
Clarity of objectives (as measurable steps to reach a goal) together with
in the output facilitate the formulation of strong value propositions. Key
in the process is long-term documentation of activities. But what are the
best metrics?

With you help and support, we hope to start identifying what cultural
institutions typically measure to evaluate digital activities. We will
present the preliminary findings from this research at a panel during
MCN2014. We will show 1) what cultural institutions find important enough
to document, 2) what metrics are being used, and 3) what is being
evaluated.

To participate, simply email your contributions to data at mcn.edu by October
1, 2014.

We are looking to collect the following data:

   - Data that your cultural institution collects on a regular basis.
Ideally, you will send a data set (any format) including several
months (or
years). Whatever you have and want to share.
  - Reports that your cultural institution produces to explain the data
(for some it may just be the print out of the data set).
  - List of projects / activities that are evaluated with the data set,
or what does your cultural institution do with the data?

Data will be presented in aggregated format so names of individuals and
institutions will be concealed. One institution will be selected to
highlight its approach to present at the ME-SIG panel.

Be part of the MCN community and contribute to building best practice on
the most important part of the digitization process: improving access to
collections!

For questions, contact Trilce Navarrete chair of ME-SIG at data at mcn.edu.

[MCN-L] MCN annual conference proceedings

2014-01-08 Thread Trilce Navarrete
there is *never* a dumb question !

Unfortunately, MCN does not archive proceedings (few presenters in fact
write a paper). The best you can do is look at the MCN conference site and
see the program abstracts http://wired.ivvy.com/event/MCN13/agenda

if a presentation looks interesting, you may want to check their SlideShare
/ professional page for more information.

This is a great opportunity to pose the question: what are the benefits /
challenges of documenting conferences? as a historian I am all for it !
second question: what are the most efficient documentation forms?

idea: could MCN organizers in Dallas recruit a few bloggers?
