I wondered about that 50%, so did someadding and calculating, pulling last years taxes, etc. Now, you have to factor in that I live in a relatively poor State, so YMMV - but our total tax load last year was under 20% - property, sales, state ,and federal. The feds got 8% - so they're right where you said they should be. Not that I enjoy paying taxes, but they don't seem to be as bad as many complain they are, at least here. [MBZ] Downsizing the fleet
OK. I have come to the reluctant conclusion that I need to downsize the car fleet. Six BMWs will be reduced/combined into 3, and the 1975 300D needs a new owner. C'est la vie. The 300D runs and drives now, but it will need some work, probably rings and valves. It has been a great performer for me for over 10 years, and I do love the car, but it is time to move on. Priced to win the Cheapest Jalopy Award at the next ChowdahQ. :) Contact me off list if you have any interest. If no interest in a week, I will be donating the car to my program, where it may have a new life as a learning lab. BTW, here is how I celebrated my 61st birthday last month. :) That is my older son, Andrew, doing the introduction on the public address system. Re: [MBZ] W123 - 240D - Engine heater plug
Sounds like your valves are too tight. My 76 300D gets to where it really does not want to start up even at 50 F even with the block heater plugged in. It cranks pretty good and tries to start but often takes several tries and runs pretty slow until it really gets going. I know you folks have told me I need to check my valve adjustments but have yet to do it. It runs fine in warmer weather and I rarely need to run it in the cooler weather so it has not really caused me much grief. It sounds like it is not hitting on all cylinders and I have to keep the starter cranking longer than I like so I am concerned that I may do some ultimate harm to the starter. Maybe, if the weather holds for another week or two, I will pull the cover and have a go at it. I put the car in the garage last night and it may well stay there until spring. The insurance has been changed to storage only so I cannot drive it now in any event. Re: [MBZ] 126 ball joints
I printed out the jobs, but never really looked at them. Took them apart, beat out the old ball joints and pressed the new ones in. Rusty's proper press is just slick. It only takes about 2 minutes each to press in the new joints. Whole job is about 4 hours so far; To take apart the front wheel carrier, beat out the ball joint and press in the new joint, then reassemble. It seemed like the most time was spent trying to beat out the old joints. At least 1 hour, I am sure. I put never-seez on the 6mm bolts for the brake backer and the ABS sensor. Problem is the left side upper boot is toast. So I ordered new upper arms. When they get in I will finish putting it all back together. Unfortunately, the upper boots are NA. I suppose I should have bought some shoo goo and liberally coated the old boots. Oh well Q fixed me right up, as usual. Actually it cannot be extracted and inserted with the hub still attached to the knuckle. It is pressed into the knuckle from the top, and the bore for it is angled so that the top of the LBJ leans toward the spindle/hub. -- John W Reames jwrea...@comcast.net Home: +14106646986 Mobile: +14437915905 On Oct 31, 2010, at 10:34, Dieselhead <126die...@gmail.com> wrote: I am about to embark on changing the lower joints on the 126. Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 60, Issue 4
That tends to be the case with most things - houses included. However, if you sell something very quickly, you often wonder if you have sold it too cheaply. I often try to underprice things just so that they will sell faster. However, it is often difficult to really judge that sort of thing accurately. We sold a 98 F150 in September and had a lot of interest in it and a quick sale although I thought I had priced it reasonably but not really cheaply. I think a lot of the reason is that the truck was in nice condition for its age and a lot of vehicles are really beaten up by that age. Re: [MBZ] Bench shop press
I think, if it were me, I would look for a larger press. I often see used presses advertised here for reasonable prices.. I bought a small bench top unit - 12 ton - but then bought a floor standing 20 ton unit as the little one would not do what I wanted to do without modification. Changing the bearings on the rear axles of a Toyota 4Runner - so I needed more height. I think I only paid about $100 for the 12 ton unit as I bought it on sale from a company sort of like HF here in Canada. Re: [MBZ] 123 SLS pump leaking?
And it's oil leaking into the oil. A rather runny oil, seems about like kerosene! Probably not too good for the engine, in quantity. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Not a big deal except it's not especially good for the Self-Leveling-Suspension pump to not have oil to pump. And it's oil leaking into the oil. Sure, the SLS oil is not the same as engine oil, but at least on my car, the engine loses crankcase oil faster than the SLS oil is leaking in. If indeed that's where the SLS oil is disappearing to. I also noticed the SLS oil seems pretty dark for a full flush about a year and a half ago. If there is engine oil leaking in, it wouldn't take much to make it rather black... Okay. I guess I know what to dig into. *smile* I could be worse. You know, like if the ACC was mis-behaving. Oh. That's another job I need to do.
