Are you sure? You are on dial up (or some limited bandwidth Internet
connection). There was no size limit for a while initially, and several people
were very vocal about their displeasure of it.

This email list strip off all extra and leaves only plain text.

Plain text has no formating, size, font, color [colour], or
style. It is just the text.

So your post views just fine!

This is also why Clay's photo didn't show up. It wasn't text so
it was removed.

After the turbo spools up. I drove a W123 turbo to the top of
Pike's Peak at over 14,000 ft [4270 m] altitude. The car hardly
had enough power to move it's shadow until the turbo wound up -
then it felt normal. But the transition was pretty abrupt!

Because it isn't text. The list is plain text only. HTML is
required to put an image "in line" so it shows up in the middle
of the words. That is removed when the list software re-mails
the post. If the photos is attached, and is less than 40k (I
think), it will pass through. Bigger and Kaleb has to approve
it.

Say - Kaleb. Why do you have it limited to 40k? Set it to,

Comand was MB's first version navigation system and perhaps the HVAC

system, it was DVD based and far from user friendly. An improved (very
slightly) version showed up in the W211 but was still inferior to the

My 2008 W204's Comand (part of the Multimedia Package) is much better but

[MBZ] OT shoes and repair - wristwatches?

2013-01-07 Thread Mountain Man
How about wristwatches for quality items?
Richarde used to have a watch email list at mbz.org - that was a fun time.
I grew to like the european stuff, primarily mechanical movements
mostly vintage.
How about this wristwatch for nice german mechanical craftmanship - EZM-1:
http://members.chello.nl/~h.mennink/watches/_private/SinnEZM1.htm
http://www.broadarrow.net/ezm1.htm

The swiss, of course, are the movement makers of renown, although,
there are good russian and chinese mechanical movements also.
I like this vintage french aviator wristwatch:
http://www.qahill.com/tz/type20/type20.html
The Type 20/21 chronograph movement is true flyback - retour en vol.
It requires one press to reset and restart the timing of the aviation
leg. Not many watches have that. The panel clock by Mathey-Tissot
Type 12 is also true flyback.

Ok - that is a beginning.
I bet we can drag this out like the shoes or bread thread.
Begin the fun.

You know the son as The Road Scholars and The Air Cooled Guys companies.
They are the best early Porsche restoration people in the country today by
winning everywhere and the factory is sending them cars to restore for the
personal collections of the family. Cam and his girlfriend were invited for
Peter's (Porsche) 70th birthday and the company paid their way, etc. They
were one of the very few that were from the US that were not execs in the
company. They are also brokers now on Porsches. It is Cam Ingram and Kevin
Watts that own the above companies. They are also personal friends and I
sometime advise Cam on earlies (ex. engine finishes on the Gmund coupe for
Peter

in 2011) and help Kevin from time to time. Right now he is helping me find a
993 that is in excellent shape for a driver for me.

However, the father Bob Imgram and his wife have the collection of around
50+ cars along with other things in a private museum that is excellent in a
building they built for the purpose. All are either extremely low miles
and/or top winners in the country. They primarily collect Porsches (Bob) and
Ferraris (wife), but have others as well. They were the ones that brought
those 16+ high end cars to the Charlotte Parade. Wealth isn't even the word
here. It is old money down south.

I'm joining this late, but I'm also a fan of high quality shoes for the
same reason. A shoemaker can breathe new life into them and they last for
years and years.

I'm a huge fan of Lloyd shoes from Germany. Until recently, I was only
able to buy them in Europe, but there is a shoe store in Pittsburgh that
sells them now:
http://bondstreetshoes.com/

Last pair I bought was on sale for about $150, which is a real steal! I
think I paid over 200EUR for the previous pair.

Here is a good example of an excellent shoe on sale:

Enjoy,

Old shoes are a big industry for the local africans. The goodwill has an
outlet store. All the stuff that was not moving at the retail locations or not
up to par for putting on the shelf. Massive rolling bins of clothing, shoes,
toys, what ever. The africans descend upon the shoes and fill 25 bushel trolly
carts with them. Then they go off into a corner, sort them, and dump the
rejects back in the bin. There are at least a half dozen of these guys there
every day. Yammering into their cell phones in loud voices, shoving and being
rude.

The books are attacked by the hipsters and old men. Both have smart phones
with specialized ISBN scanners. Same assault on the bin, fill the trolly and
sort the books. Pretty fast, as they scan, toss, and grab another. Probably
keep a dozen of the hundreds they initially took.

Seattle Goodwill Industries has gone upscale and now have dedicated goodies
identifying staff. They look at just about everything that used to hit the in
store boutique. If it is old, or interesting, it will not ever hit the retail
floor. Goes to the Online Sales wing, which researches, and posts it to
fleabay. They are making a mint. Opening bids are $9.99, unless they know it
is worth much more, then it goes up for lowest accepted appraised value. There
was a Dali sketch, maybe 3x5", posted at $999.00, sold for 9k

Used to be that you took the night soil (poop) and contents of the piss pot (if
you did not live in town, where that was needed at the tannery) to the garden.
Three sided compost pen where you emptied the chamber pot, cover it with hay,
toss the liquid on, and kitchen scraps went there as well. Weeds too. Turn it
once a month, and in the spring you amend the soil in the garden.

Granddad told me about this when I asked him about the quality of his veggies.
After I walked to the garden and found him discharging the processed beer into
the hay filled bin. He was not interested in walking back inside while
gardening and the old fridge was stocked to the gills with cases of beer.
Gardening was a six pack affair. That allowed enough time away from Granny,
got the work done and kept Granddad hydrated.

There is still a learning curve on Siri. They tried to make it as forgiving as
possible, but we are non standard, so some diction gets screwed up. Given my
level of hearing loss, I am very lenient in my dealing with Siri. She must be
as impaired as I am, since I have to keep asking for a repeat.

I believe the NA auto '74 240D (616.xxx) was manual. I seem to recall
reading something in the owner's manual about adjusting it over a certain
altitude, though I suppose that could have just been a rough adjustment and
there was other stuff going on for finer control.

The 240D was no rocket, but it would accelerate up every local grade (and
there are some decent hills here). I cannot say the same for the '77 300D.

My father used to do this in his diesel Oldsmobile. Interestingly none of
my diesels has been so dirty, presumably the ULSD makes it harder to show
your disapproval to tailgaters. :)

A quality shoe can be revitalized. You have to take the insole out and do some
cobblery mucking about, then fit a good leather insole formed and fitted to
your foot and the shoe. The cost is not reasonable, and unless we are speaking
of near magical Italian or other handmade footwear, best to get your own new
shoe. That said, if you do not mind investing $200+, it can be done.

I never made it above 3958 feet with Gump, so higher altitude driving is out of
my area. Being able to row the gears did allow for very good throttle
positioning within the power band so you could climb without needing to lay
down a Bondsian amount of sight obscuring fog or letting loose an oil slick.
It was by no means quick or snappy, and a healthy amount of velocity going into
the climb allowed for a greater chance of reasonable speed during the climb
while you regressed down the gears. Never ended up in first, but second was
standard after a few miles.

My understanding is that the spot welds that hold the perch to the chassis rust
and fail leading to potentially catastrophic results which could lead to a
fatal accident. I'm not aware of anyone getting killed from this though.
The W210 chassis is very rust prone in general. I have seen many very rusty
examples here in the northeast. I'm actually looking at one right now:)

very nicely. Whats important is that things didn't start to rust, seize, or get

pretty special for one reason or another to warrant this kind of attention."

When I was at the dealership, we had a customer bring his mother's 1977
Cadillac Seville. It had the 350 engine and the car had 13,000 miles. She had
parked it for nearly 20 years. GM makes this stuff called GM Top Engine
Cleaner. I thought maybe it was worthless like many fuel system supplements.
But, we pulled the plugs out and poured that stuff into the cylinders and let
it soak for 3 days. We changed the oil twice and refilling it each time. We
manually turned it over to get it blow a lot of that crap out of the cylinders.
Finally, when we did start it, it worked. I don't know what was in it, but it
cleaned all the varnish and carbon out of the engine and it ran very well. We
changed the plugs after 1000 miles and changed the oil again and that car ran
great! Or at least as well as a 1977 Cadillac could run.

Just last month, my indy decided to get his Ferrari (it's an early 80's model)
running again. He tried to start it and had no luck. The fuel pumps were
shot. He tried to find Ferrari replacement pumps and they were $5000 EACH.
So, he ended up taking the old ones out and rebuilding them himself. I told
him you have to start and drive these cars (he probably has 20 beautiful and
exotic cars in his shop that haven't been driven in 20 years). I offered to
come down every Saturday and drive them all, but he declined. :)

But haven't you heard? There are germs and they're going to kiiilll
you. Live in fear, buy our anti-germ stuff, it'll save you. If it doesn't we'll
sell you some new some new anti-germ stuff.

I've read that IBS is basically unheard of in the third world, the current
working theory is that some of the parasites in our gut that we work so hard to
kill are actually good for us and keep our gut running right. Thus our
germ-o-phobic world resigns some (many?) people to the bathroom.

People are funny about stuff, poo especially. I keep thinking I ought to start
humanure composting. I've read the handbook, we did an experiment at camp one
time (shoveling out a full outhouse is no fun, I'm looking for an alternative)
and ended up with nothing. Meaning one bucket full of "stuff" (which is to say
poo covered in sawdust) from the trial dumped in a pile in the woods with
leaves added over top became nothing in 1 year, meaning I couldn't find where
I'd dumped it... At home I was thinking about how much water we'd save.

Sheesh! what's the big deal? Have these guys never put bare feet on

You can voice-train Android (Google) voice recognition, so it gets better
over time as you suffer through this sort of thing. Not sure how iphone's
versions works but Siri isn't really a voice-to-text system like Android
uses.

That said I was going to recommend your niece/nephew-in-law consider some
of the iphone/android software for this. Google's default keyboard has a
voice module so it is relatively simple to switch to and from voice typing,
and the latest versions (4.0+) are very good. Swype keyboard (also free)
uses Dragon technology and is frequently updated. The phone/tablet would
also have an integrated camera so they can isolate records, maybe using
something like EverNote that can keep information together easily.

[MBZ] OEM Monovalve & MTC Aux Pump Heads Up

2013-01-07 Thread Jon Agne
Rusty...Thank you for getting me the OEM monovalve. I installed it a couple of
weeks ago, but have not driven the car due to the snow and ice. I finally had
the chance to test it yesterday (Maine to NYC) and it performed flawlessly. At
cruise, the valve modulated as advertised putting out warm (not hot) in the
footwell, and when necessary cool air from the dash vents. It really is nice
to have a working ACC system!!!

Unfortunately, The MTC aux pump looks like it is starting to leak again. Not
as bad as before, but enough that I can see coolant in the engine compartment
under the pump. I'll try and get the screwdriver on it again to re-tighten.
BTW, this is not a complaint. I am merely posting as a lessons learned for
anybody else with a new MTC aux pump.

My shoes (SAS) come with a replaceable insert that conforms to the wearer's
foot. In fact, I've replaced inserts a few times, making the shoes feel new
again and always very comfortable. Might some of the shoes under discussion
have such a replaceable insert? (BTW, I'm not talking about some sort of
universal (Dr. Scholl's, or whatever) insert, I'm talking about an OE
insert.)

it was Fred Mior who sent the program. Thanks, again, Fred.

A niece just called with a question re. the program. She and her husband
operate a thriving, but small, auction business. During last several
months their internet sales have grown fast. Preparation for these
sales, though, are a bit time consuming and tedious, taking two people.
He has to take photo of the item and tell a helper what to type, etc.,
