SVO is straight veggie, instead of WVO being waste veggie. If it is used, you have some more issues than if you pour out of a sealed jug. 2 gallons is good, as you will be really close to 10% in any tank our cars have (23 gallons in the e300d) clay On 16 Oct 2007, at 11:22, LarryT wrote: > I believe VO is Vegetable Oil - but what is SVO? > > Also - > It sounds like I can pour a gallon or 2 pf VO (SVO?) into my tank & > fill the > rest of the way with diesel and get most of the benefits (smooth, > quiet and > lower stench.)? > > Sorry - haven't followed this thread closely. > > Larry T (67 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D) > www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts > Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil > PORSCHE POSTERS! youroil.net > Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs > . > > - Original Message - > From: "Redghost" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: "Mercedes Discussion List" > Sent: Monday, October 15, 2007 8:21 PM > Subject: Re: [MBZ] Low Sulfur Fuel Lubricity...Am I Nuts? > > >> Where you are, you should be fine with a few gallons of SVO in each >> tank. I really did not expect to hear any difference but their surely is. Kind of like adding a quart of motor oil to the fuel tank at high altitudes, as it alters the rate of combustion. And the smell of the exhaust is much more pleasant, as well. Re: [MBZ] Low Sulfur Fuel Lubricity...Am I Nuts?
I'm sure there are those that'll say you're nuts but I'm not one of them. I've seen it too although it was much more pronounced in my 240D than the 190D. #2 is $3.09 here which is has just about pushed me into a BJs membership. Theres one on my commute and at this price it might be possible to pay for the membership in fuel savings over a year alone. Any other savings is a bonus. -Curt Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2007 13:44:40 -0700 From: "Robert Rentfro" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [MBZ] Low Sulfur Fuel Lubricity...Am I Nuts? To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Now that #2 is $3.05 here, I bought 5 gallons of SVO that was on sale to last me until tomorrow night when I have to head to work.where I can get, along the freeway, #2 at Loves for $2.85 (I hope). So I dump in the SVO and drive off and by the time I make it to the first light, it seems I am running markedly smoother and quieter. Since they have gone to exclusively low-sulfur I haven't made it into town to the closest bio pump (about 6 months or so). Does it really make that much of a difference or am I just nuts? It sounds and feels so much better it makes me want to start collecting WVO... Bob Rentfro '77 300D 182K Goodyear, AZ - Boardwalk for $500? In 2007? Ha! Re: [MBZ] Low Sulfur Fuel Lubricity...Am I Nuts?
hi Bob! the MBZs around here running VO (and there are a lot of them) are the smoothest sounding by far; BioD sounds almost as good, but not quite. as i understand it, the lubricity isn't the contributing factor, but rather the way the different fuels ignite and burn. downsides are that if VO isn't heated, its viscosity is much higher than the #2 it was designed for, causing strain on the injection pump and injectors... and downstream from that, it doesn't atomize properly causing 'splattery' injection (sure, that's the technical term!) resulting in drops being injected instead of a mist; leading to incomplete ignition, internal deposits and even internal component failure due to the uneven internal temperatures caused by the VO droplets adhering to the interior surfaces in the combustion chamber. of course, there are lots of stories of people who take advantage of these motors durability and manage to get away with running all kinds of things in them for a *while*, but it never seems to last for the long run. i've seen the inside of some relatively low-mileage 617s that ran unheated VO, and they were pretty gunked up. short story is, if you're going to use VO, make sure you at least have some way to heat the fuel enough to get its viscosity down to where it can be pumped and injected properly. cheers! e '85 300D BioD in Berkeley Robert Rentfro wrote: > Now that #2 is $3.05 here, I bought 5 gallons of SVO that was on sale to > last me until tomorrow night when I have to head to work.where I can get, > along the freeway, #2 at Loves for $2.85 (I hope). Re: [MBZ] Low Sulfur Fuel Lubricity...Am I Nuts?
Vegoil has a lower flame front speed or something like that, so it combusts a bit slower, probably less power, so it is quieter (whump! instead of BANG!), It smells better though.
