I'm still wondering where you get the software to run on the laptop to
interrogate the codes (rather than count flashes) and the adapter
needed, how much it costs, and whether it's a better deal than a
Snap-On 2500 (which I've been eyeing as a way to scan all my pre-OBD2

Computers are fine and rarely fail. Senders rarely fail, although I did have
a right side knock sensor that was bad when I got the car. Wiring harness's
are shit on the 1992-1995 S-Class. Ya'd think that for what they charged for
the thing when new the wiring wouldn't deteriorate.

Both our cars are ODB1 so I had a Snap On 2500 scanner, sold it when I got
the Mercedes DAS software for a spare laptop. You can pull the same codes
with a Led light and some wires it's just that I suck at counting led
flashes, pretty good at reading GUI interfaces. ;)

The Dvd is a digital copy of the paper manuals. I usually pull up whatever
I'm working on, print it out and head outside with the printed instructions
and picture of what I'm working on.

So there is a DVD available for the R129? What's the content
like---scans from the printed manuals like the CD-ROMs for the older
chassis, or something else?

What kind of code scanner do you have? Everything I've seen that
works with pre-OBDII Mercedes seems to be aimed at professionals and
priced accordingly.

Re: [MBZ] Manuals for 1990 300 SL??

2007-09-06 Thread James Zavesky
I do all my own work on our cars, even after my back operation. Our 1991
500SL is easier to work on than our 1992 600SEL. Our 500SL doesn't have
traction control (ASR) which is perfect for that chassis. On the 500SL the
major problems are the oil tubes in the engine, hydraulic latches in the "A"
pillar fot the convertible top and the wiring harness's. The 500SL is a
piece of cake to work on compared to the 600SEL. So I guess it's all
relative. To work on either buy the Dvd from the dealer for that particular
chassis, a decent set of tools and a code scanner.

liked taking that Route 66 Mercedes Drive with you like you mentioned. Your

direct comparisons with Mercedes and all other competing makes. Actually
kinda cool.

I also am a book junkie. I am a technical writer with a degree in Professional

You are absolutely correct in that folks have no appreciation of the work that
goes into writing a technical manual. I estimate that each Haynes manual costs

Thanks, Chris...I figure we're all newbies on one thing or another. I'm a
"book junkie" anyway, so I'll probably get it just to have it

I'm a newbie and for me it was WELL worth the money.
Things are explained very simply and you learn about
how the car works...you read it and start making a
list of all the stuff you want to do!
For the diesel veteran, it might not be worth the
monye. I would recommend it to any newbie.

Somebody the other day mentioned that on of Hammie's many problems might
be valve stem seals. Then yesterday I happened to be looking at the
Mercedessource site and found
http://www.mercedessource.com/store/item.php?item=4%20Cylinder%20Diesel%20Va
lve%20Stem%20Replacement%20Kit
this kit to replace the seals. Hammie does consume a fair amount of oil
without leaking it and does blow a bit of black smoke first thing in the
morning. Is this likely worth doing?
