Re: [MBZ] Possible Kleb Car

2020-01-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yeah, a lot of that.

It’s amazing to me how much (old) furniture comes up on the local FB
marketplace. I realize it’s just a sign of the (millennial) times, but there’s
simply no demand for these big dining room sets with big tables with leaves,
china cabinets, sideboards, etc., etc. I’ve seen some really nice stuff go for
peanuts.

I picked up a sideboard (think big cabinet that you put your large service
dishes and stuff in) made by Baker Furniture a couple of months ago. It’s a
stunning piece made of solid hardwoods like mahogany and with all sorts of
beautiful marquetry (veneer) work. Baker is owned by Kohler (bet you didn’t
know that!) and produces some of the finest handmade furniture there is.

https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/baker-furniture-historic-charleston-480159397

This was a $10,000 piece of furniture when it was new. They still command a
chunk of change when they show up on auction.

I paid $220 for mine after it had been on FB marketplace for nearly a month
with no takers. Score!

Re: [MBZ] OT: Life cycle costs for manufacturing waste, recycling for wind turbines

2020-01-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Humidity is a big issue in homes like this, even in places like AK where there
is no humidity. We built a home with this kind of technology for the time in
1990/91 in WI and we had to use an air to air heat exchanger and dehumidifier.
Our house had 6” exterior walls with a Tyvec barrier wrap. It was tight.

It was definitely cheap(er) to operate in the winter compared to typical homes
in that climate. However, you had to be aware of the humidity getting out of
control. Our next door neighbor, a neck cracker, was very vain and took showers
like 2-3 times a day. After three years they had to gut and replace the master
bath because the drywall was destroyed from his multiple daily showers.

I think it does, need to learn my way around this engine. No idea where that
is, beyond somewhere on the engine, front or rear.

Fuel pump relay / fuel pump is another possibility. I think that relay is
behind the battery?

Having experienced ice release on propellers while flying, I can attest
that when a chunk of ice hits the airplane and opens a hole in the cockpit
behind you it is a near panic event..
Ice does not accumulate in smooth layers. It depends on the droplet size of
the moisture, cooling, and other factors. Each segment of the rotating
blades is at a different speed, thus a different cooling effect.. plus,
other factors.

Wow, that is pretty nice.  Could probably buy that kind of stuff and
haul it up here and sell it.

Score!

Question. My car is a 78 300D non turbo. How fast are yall comfortable
taking these things up to on the highway? Any point at which you feel
the motor is revving too high, or do they handle it fine? Pic for attention

Harry Cannonball Raymond,
that thing doesn't make enough horsepower to hurt itself. That engine is
absolutely fine producing 100 % of its rated power continuously. That
isn't some pussy car for the masses.

Scott Bleggi You can see why they put
a 2.88 rear in the 85s. But still, all the advice is good. After all,
they were designed for the Autobahn. Just don’t vibrate off the seat.

Son, the 85 had a

If you get that, I'll buy the muffler system if it is not rusted out. I'll also

Well maybe I should buy it then sell you the body. Can I store it on your land?

[MBZ] 115 parts car

2020-01-26 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I just got done looking at this. Sat in a field for at least the last 15 years.
Floor board rusted out. Fenders rusted. I thought about picking it up to add to
okie acres for a parts car as it’s worth it for the tranny. Engine might be
good who knows. I just didn’t feel like loading it up then unloading it when I
got home.

I guess so. If the engine was good it would be worth it for sure but I really
don’t know what I would do with it. The guy already sold the fog lights, hub
caps, and radio off it.

Yes, you may use starting fluid on a gasoline engine ...

I was going to suggest testing for spark as well -- it used to be easy to
do, just remove a plug wire, put a screwdriver in the boot so it contacts
the metal contact and hold it near some metal.

With the high-energy system those cars have, however, I am not entirely
sure that is how to do it.

You could test for the current going  into the coil.  Wouldn't a bad

Re: [MBZ] It's raining cheap diesels

Andrew Downer

I had that happen once with the vw Diesel.   The guy I paid to put a new
head on the wabbit got mad because he wanted me to pay him to rebuild
(screwup) the block.  I told him no, just put the head on.   He kept
saying that putting on a new head would cause it to loose compression.
After I ran it a couple short trips, ran it 200 miles and it
wouldn't start.   No compression!   When I took the pistons out they
were all gummed up.   He put sugar in the fuel tank.   That was just one
of his little scams, I found out later.   Obviously I did not take it
back to him.   I did it myself.

far you could fling a one pound chunk of ice off the end of a 130 foot long

Remember, the speed of sound at sea level is 330 meters/second = 738 mph.

I can figure out how far something with a starting velocity of, say,
500 mph would travel, but that will have to wait for now.

[MBZ] Bosch Starter/alternator part numbers

Found this trying to find rotor/stator part numbers for BMW R75.   It
should be useful.   It has supercede charts for 10 digit numbers,
predecessor charts for 10 digit numbers, 10 digit to typ number, parts
breakdown for starter 10 digit numbers, giving you the 10 digit part
number for each part.   Same for alternators.

Also has similar info for regulators, brushes etc.

Unfortunately it does not seem to include the BMW parts as they are
probably propriety application.  Anyone got a neighbor with a /6 parts

Or 1082.675 ft/second.

If a rotor has 125' blades and say 2' from center to the base of the
rotor, the circumference would be πD or  254π = 797.964 ft.    So if the
rotor made one revolution per second, the tip would be traveling at 798
FPS.   (Subsonic)

If the rotor was 300' Dia.  then the circumference is 942.477 ft.   at 1
rev/sec. it would be subsonic at sea level, but probably as close as you
want to get in practice.
