this was posted before within the last 3 days, but I will let that slide
for three reasons:

1) it wasn't about "cockrock"
2) it wasn't about how it wasn't cockrock
3) Phil Smoker is easily my most favorite member of this list...and I
don't even know the guy, but I always find his posts extremely well thought
out, never off the cuff, RARELY redundant, but always worth reading.

We all could learn miles from Philip Smoker.

if you can't say something smart, you post 6 million messages a day.

Russ, you don't understand...this is actually the fictional character
Barry, from the popular book/movie "High Fidelity" by Nick Hornby/starring
John Cousack.

Fictional characters are allowed to say and do things like this, I mean,
how else could Keanu Reeves do the splits in a pseudo-kung fu movie?

Why are they allowed, because they are fictional characters.

Always real,

What the hell is "an extropian?"

But you pose a good question/query Robbins, Mark...

I've listened to the new album a few times, and is it just me reading
into it, or are there a lot of subtle references to the "rape allegations"...

I'd love to hear people's thematic interpretations...

like, is 3rd planet about abortion? so far, that's my initial theory...

"we used to be 3 and not just two"

And does anyone else notice the eerie similarity between

I would like to give a big shout out to my boss and the senior VP of

The cd cost me $17 plus some sort of mocha coffee thing and a black and

2000-06-12 Thread J to the R

Last night, as I was driving home...I heard "Tiny Cities..." on WHFS
"The New Rock Alternative"...it was bizzarre. The next song that was
after that was something about Superman/kryptonite, but it wasn't that
song by that hippy looking guy with red hair and the video with the paint...I
think the guy said they were something like "Three Dog Night"...but it
wasn't. Anyway, the DJ, whom I think said his name was "Jed The Fish"
then said..."Alright, that's enough weird music for one day, that's the
new one by Modest Mouse who release their album on Tuesday"...or something
like that.

This was JUST before "Now Here This,"...which is a program on SUndays
(@9?) that plays new "indyish" stuff, so maybe that was the reason, although
it was during a distinctly different program ("OUt of Order")...

I can't wait.

Re: [MMouse]: isaac's tattoo/film crew/trophy

2000-05-24 Thread J to the R

This question, ironically enough, was posed last night--I think by one
of the tough guys mosh pitters--to Isacc and he said "it's basically
a bug like creature...maybe a fly...a friend of mine drew it..."

after a pause,

he said, "either way it was a mistake"

that, of course, is not a direct quote, but it was something along those
lines..maybe "madflower?" heard, it sounds like she was right up front...he's
hard to understand, did you know he has a lisp?

I did not tape the show, but maybe one exists?...(Russ, when do we get
to see some new stuff on the boots page?)

On the other hand, no one has mentioned the "film crew" that was up in
Isacc's grill...and judging from earlier posts were there at some other
shows? Maybe a Modest Mouse tour video is in the works, and the Phish
Movie joke wasn't that far fetched. If Fugazi and Insane Clown Posse
can do it, so can Modest Mouse, right? We -- my brother and I --noticed
that there was a microphone attached to the ceiling, quite likely in
conjunction with the "film crew."

Also, and I realize I babbled outside of my quota for the month, did
you know that Modest Mouse is an award winning band? They were presented
with a trophy last night. Just thought I'd mention that...

I'll go back to reading posts about pre-natal care and 3 people argue
about hockey.

over and over and out.

Re: [MMouse]: More Tour Dates/D.C show/SMALL T-Shirt?

2000-05-24 Thread J to the R

I think they intend to tour again in the fall, however I'm not sure where
I read that. And by the way, I too am waiting for the official release.
I feel like a chump, but I am. It makes me feel good to know that there
are others out there getting the mascohistic pleasure out of the long
wait...we should form a support group, for real.

His name was Robert Paulson...

The D.C show was just alright...I never thought they were building to
some sort of peak. Just when I thought they were getting somewhere...it
dropped again. Imagine, if you will, a line graph. If I was daytrading
stock in the band, I would have sold my shares at Cowboy Dan or Tiny
Cities Made of Ashes...after wishing I had sold at Doin' The Cockroach,
and called it a night. You other shareholders would have been in the
red by the end of the show, praying for another encore...turns out, Isacc
was just kicking feedback. HOWEVER, I'll be buying in again tonight...and
the market is looking solid, with Les Savy Fav heating up. Did you know
they rock the party that rocks the body?

Oh, what is up with only having SMALL t-shirts left? If anyone has a
large or medium (or even x-large) and is wishing for a small...please
get in touch. I know 24 of you greedy bastards bought extra shirts just
so you could make a fucking killing on eBay! Why not try the stock market?

Re: [MMouse]: THE DISMEMBERMENT PLAN ! RESPECT IS DUE !

2000-05-23 Thread J to the R

The first time I saw Modest Mouse the Dismemberment Plan opened up for
them.

"The Great Lisp Show of 98"

In a battle of the bands, Modest Mouse destroys The Plan, however...if
it was fought only with lead singers' dueling lisps...it's a toss up.
Travis could certainly hang with Isacc on the lisp front. That would
make for a killer comic book hero...

He'd pull out a book full of S'ss and the evil speach teachers would
cringe in pain...

The D-Plan slow jams suck, but if you only listen to the fast jams you
can understand why...Travis is a lyrical master, but he wears his ego
on his sleeve. Isacc is a lyrical master, but he wears his ego between
his legs...

however, they're my top two favorite bands...and what's great about both,
people love them or hate them...at least you can't be ambivalent. If
I were an "artist," I'd at least want people to fall on either side of
the fence, rather than sitting with a white spear up their ass in metaphorical
indecision.
