Re: [MOSAIC] starting the year with non-fiction
There was a recent study onwhat primary grade kids prefer to read and guess whatthey prefer NONFICTION. Students were given the freedom to select books for reading. Students chose nonfiction books! The authors suggest that perhaps the pedagogy of using story books is done to focus on story elements. Re: [MOSAIC] retention versus early entry
Like Julianne, I have a son who has an August birthday. And like her twins, my son was academically ready for kindergarten but I felt he lacked the social skills necessary to be successful. He is going to be entering his senior year in high school in September and in some ways, I still feel he's immature. His first two girlfiriends were a school year behind him as well as most of his friends. I think you have to know your own child and what might/might night work. I've had students who were the youngest and you could not tell and for others, the difference was obvious. [MOSAIC] retention versus early entry
I have been a k/1 teacher for many years. My daughter has an Aug. 8th birthday. Aug.31st is the cutoff for Kindergarten in Florida. She was always extremely small for her size. I went ahead and let her begin K with the thought that if she ended up not ready to move on, I was fine with that. She had 3 and 4 year old preschool so I knew that she had some readiness - just not the maturity to go with it. As it turned out, she blossomed so much and far surpassed many others in the class academically. Although size and maturity was against her, it was not in her best interest to be retained either. She would have been extremely bored and it would have wasted a year. My only regret is that my daughter is still small for her age but her maturity has slowly caught up with the others throughout the years. It is hard sometimes to find that line of retention as a teacher and a parent but I truly feel that each child needs to be looked at individually to find the best way to make him/her successful. It's never black and white. Debbie The information contained in this message may be privileged and confidential and protected from disclosure. [MOSAIC] from Jennifer
Hello everyone! It is my great privilege to moderate the mosaic list while Ginger is on sabbatical. She leaves very big shoes to fill but I know you all will help me to keep the conversation focused as well as enlightening to all who participate! As a way of introducing myself to everyone, I thought I would let you know a little of my background. I have been teaching for 15 years now. I was a late starter...worked in business out of college and then took a pay cut to become a first grade teacher...a move I have never regretted. During my time in first grade, I became National Board Certified...something that I am very proud of. Since then, I moved into the position of reading specialist and also teach Diagnosis of Reading Difficulties part time. My interests, naturally are comprehension strategies but also staff development and teacher training. I already moderate two listservs here in Maryland: one for Maryland National Board candidates and one small one for the reading specialists in my district. It was a very great honor to be asked to moderate this list which has been a crucial part of my own staff development for the past several years. I have been a frequent participant in discussions and have signed all my email as Jennifer, Maryland. We have had some amazing conversations over the summer and as the school year starts, I hope that this can continue to be the place to share thoughts and ideas about reading comprehension and reflect on our teaching in a risk-free forum. I know you all will join me in wishing Ginger a restful sabbatical and look forward to her eventual return at the end of one year. Re: [MOSAIC] starting the year with non-fiction
I agree. Plus, there are so many lovely new nonfiction big books for shared reading, so we can use that process to teach strategies to read nonfiction, just as we do fiction. If you haven't read Brenda Parkes book on shared reading (Read It Again: Revisiting Shared Reading), treat yourself and your kids and find a copy. It's nice to be able to teach MOT strategies and deep structure in several genres and using several techniques (read-aloud, shared reading, independent reading). Plus, you have those big books to do the same range of things I just mentioned, but in writing. Bev As a first grade teacher I find many of my kids, and especially the strugglers, prefer non-fiction. They have more schema for it because they have observed and wondered. The pictures and photos are engaging and comprehension is a bit easier because there is a lot of literal interpretation. Re: [MOSAIC] retention versus early entry
While it's true someone has to be the youngest, I'm in favor of letting parents decide if their young child has the readiness skills to perform at a level that will set the tone for a positive educational experience. In my own case, I have twin boys with an August birthday. Both had speech delays and one had other developmental delays. Our district has not only full day kindergarten but all are k/1 classes. The academic standards are rigorous and many of the students just go with the flow but are not fully engaged because they really don't understand, they aren't making connections. (I was the k/1 aide one year) Both of my boys would have been able to perform well academically, but it would have been a stressful year for them otherwise. I don't necessarily agree with the curriculum standards of today's kindergarten and am more in favor of allowing kids to PLAY at the age of 5. My husband and I decided to keep our boys home an extra year and we're impressed with the difference that year made. I am confident they can contribute in much more positive ways to a k/1 class this year while benefiting from exposure to the first grade curriculum. If they maintain a high academic edge over their grade peers we would consider putting them ahead where they should've been in the first place, but my guess is that by second or third grade most of their grade level peers will have caught up. Doesn't this happen alot of the time, anyway? For us it was always an issue of social/emotional readiness not future academic performance and I believe it does make a difference. Now, if my district had the option of a straight kindergarten or half day kindergarten, we might not have kept our boys home an extra year. I have to say, however, that I would not suggest to another parent what decision they ought to make for their own child unless I was asked for input. For years we were told, give the young ones an extra year and now it seems teachers don't like what that process has led to. I'm not the expert and only want to have to make that decision for my own children. OK, that's a cop out! Re: [MOSAIC] retention versus early entry
Our schools are testing using the Geselle instrument (spelling unclear) and some are sorting the 'immature' into classrooms full of immature...which seems like it must be making somebody's life easier, but I don't think an immature child learns maturity in a sea of immaturity. Personally, how about we let parents decide and figure out how to teach the kids we get, not the ones we wish he had?? I don't mean to sound harsh, but I have readiness issues. Every child is ready to learn, they just may not be so keen on what we want to teach them. Re: [MOSAIC] starting the year with non-fiction
As a first grade teacher I find many of my kids, and especially the strugglers, prefer non-fiction. They have more schema for it because they have observed and wondered. The pictures and photos are engaging and comprehension is a bit easier because there is a lot of literal interpretation. Things make sense. Fiction can be daunting especially when there are nonsense words, humor, deep meaning, conversation, no illustrations and the list can go on. I guess what I am saying concurs with others: kids need both fiction and nonfiction. They need to understand the similarities as well as the differences. The conventions need to be explicit for both. They need to talk and write about both. First graders can and do both from the get go. ** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org.
