[newbie] Installing LM 8.2 on a laptop

2002-04-15 Thread Andy Weller

Hello,

I am trying to install/update (from LM 8.0) LM 8.2 on my laptop; but it
gets as far as configuring for PCMCIA and seems to stall and go no
further! I don't have any PCMCIA cards installed!

I can't find anyway round this and want 8.2 on my laptop to keep it
identical to my desktop PC.

I have looked into setting PnP OS to NO in bios; but my BIOS does not
have that option!

BIOS is:

ROM PCI/ISA BIOS (2A69NC2A)
CMOS SETUP UTILITY
AWARD SOFTWARE, INC.

Laptop is:
Chicony-MP995
Intel Celeron 333
64Mb RAM
6GB HD

Thanks,

Andy

I don't have any PCMCIA cards installed!

That happened to me and I solved that setting PnP OS to NO in bios. Try
 that ;)

No joy. I don't see that option in my BIOS. I have a:

CMOS SETUP UTILITY
AWARD SOFTWARE, INC.

Maybe I am being dumb and have missed something...

[newbie] my clock is all wrong...

2001-08-06 Thread Andy Weller

Dear all,

Ever since I have had Mandrake 8.0 on my machine my clock has been
wrong. I have changed its settings many a times, but it is still
losing/gaining (don't know!) time...

Any clues/ideas?

Thanks,

Andy

[newbie] WinDOS NT install UK government

2001-07-18 Thread Andy Weller

Dear all,

Thanks one and all who helped me solve my dual boot (NT/Linux) problems.
NT sucks and had to use the start sectors of my HD - the WinDOS
partition I had created (during Linux install) was at the end...
therefore, I had to blow the whole lot and start again!!! What a
nightmare I had trying to get it up and running - it has taken me (
others) almost 2 days to configure and set up NT! I installed and
configured LM 8.0 this morning in approx. 2 hours flat! WOW - wasn't
quite expecting that, in fact, quite the opposite! Hasn't 'our' OS come
along way? The install is so much more user-friendly compared to NT - it
was a breaze. I even took coffee during package install :)

Another topic that has sprung to mind (which stems from Linux in public
(state) schools) is the use of Linux for government services/offices. I
was speaking to someone the other day who works for our NHS (which is in
tatters and could do with as much £'s as possible). Their 'industry
standard' is M$ and often workers are sent on M$ courses for them to
learn how to use M$ products (WinDOS, Office, etc.). Surely the use of
M$ products amounts to great expense to the tax payer!?! An obvious way
to be kinder on the tax payers pocket - or (which is surely prefered) to
put that money back into services is to use a better/cheaper alternative
- Linux!

I would imagine this is the case for many other UK (Euro/US) government
services/offices. They could save £'s...

Just a thought.

Thanks,

Andy

[newbie] Windoze install

2001-07-12 Thread Andy Weller

Dear all,

I need to install Windoze NT4 on my Linux (Mandrake 8.0) box :( I
already have a partition of 4Gb set aside for Windoze. What's the best
way to go about this - shall I boot into my Windoze partition and
install it there? Or, can I go into Linux and install Windoze on the
partition there?

From the literature it seems as though Windoze NT needs to be installed
1st - followed by Linux. I would like to avoid this if possible as I
would have to start from scratch when I have Linux set up exactly as I
want!

Any pointers/help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Andy

[newbie] 56K MDC modem not working...

2000-09-27 Thread weller

Dear all,

Please help - I am only one step away from configuring Linux (Mandrake 7.1)
and removing Windows from my machine FOREVER :)

At present I can't get Linux to recognise my modem - I am pretty sure that
it is not a Winmodem (there isn't anything anywhere that says it is a
Winmodem #8211; the words "HSP, HCF, or DSP" do not appear at all). It is
a 56K Main-Daughter-Card clone, not a PCMCIA card, but built on the mother
board.

If I were to install the drivers under Windows the Modem will come up
under:

'? Other Devices' - '? PCI Card'

in the Device Manager and would run in COM3 (ttsy2). Yes - it was not
listed under #8216;modems#8217; in Windows, but under '? Other Devices'.
Although when the Windows driver was installed it magically changed to a
modem!?!

I didn't try on configure it while installing Linux. I have tried kppp
since installation and then tried to communicate with it, but it says that
the modem is busy? So I presume it is there #8211; just doing something
#8211; maybe a lock file somewhere?

This is all the information that I can obtain from the modem:
MODEM 56K MDC
COM 3
IRQ 5
Address D800
Manufacturer - Compact Flash Technology

The laptop is a Chicony MP-995 machine. What I can get from the manual is:
Intel BGA-1 on board uPGA-1 socket for Celeron
Intel 440MX

Any guesses / answers? Should I have configured it whilst installation - or
does this not matter?

Many thanks in advance,
Andy
