[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Orange-crowned Warbler

2010-12-17 Thread Sy Schiff
Massapequa Preserve 17 Dec.

Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) followed up on Dave Klauber's report, arriving at
Pittsburgh Ave. about 2:15. At the pond we saw a Great Blue Heron and Belted
Kingfisher .Walking north to where we believed was the spot, we heard a very
vocal WINTER WREN across the stream and 2 BROWN CREEPERS on our side. No
warblers.

We then drove north to Massachusetts Ave (400 yds north) and parked on Parkside
Blvd. next to the entrance path to the hiking trail. on the west side of the
stream We walked north for 200 yards and returned, all without success. Five
yards to the south at the junction to return to the car, as we were leaving the
preserve, we spotted a small bird feeding on the white tuffs of goldenrod, the
elusive ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. . Another WINTER WREN appeared on the short
walk to the car.

[nysbirds-l] West End/Jones Beach, NY

2010-12-17 Thread ken feustel
I took a walk down to the WE2 jetty this morning, then headed north along the
inlet and through the Fisherman's Parking Area. Birding highlights included 250
Common Eider on the east side of the jetty, in addition to seven Purple
Sandpipers. The recent cold snap has apparently impacted waterfowl - I observed
two female Common Mergansers in Jones Inlet. In addition to Corey's 22 American
Pipits near the Nature Center (I later observed eighteen), I recorded an
additional sixteen Pipits in the median west of the Jones Beach Water Tower,
for a total of 34 Pipits (or 38 Pipits).

Ocean Parkway Closure Update

News 12 LI indicated at about 3:00PM this afternoon that law enforcement
authorities will decide tonight whether to continue the search along Ocean
Parkway for evidence related to the discovery of the four bodies east of Gilgo
Beach.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2010-12-17 Thread Corey Finger
Danny Melore, Alan Goodman, and I paid a brief visit to Jones Beach West End

the shrike (not surprisingly).

[nysbirds-l] Lark Sparrow- Calverton Grasslands, Suffolk County

2010-12-17 Thread Vinny Pellegrino
Just a little while ago I had marvelous views of a Lark Sparrow feeding with a
flock of 4 Chipping, 2 Field, 4 Tree, and several Song Sparrows and Juncos.
The bird was foraging in the grass immediatly west of the entrance to the
Calverton Grasslands by the way of Grumman Blvd. The entire flock was pretty
skittish, often darting into the shrubs bordering the pond there. The Lark
Sparrow was really favoring the grass in front of the chain-link fence on
Grumman Blvd. Pics will be posted when I get home.

Beach.
