[nysbirds-l] Middletown Pink-footed Goose???

2011-11-26 Thread Alan Wells
Hi All,

My wife and I spent Saturday afternoon looking for the Pink-footed Goose
reported from the Middletown area of Orange Co. Lots of Canada Geese (+ 1
Cackling Goose) near the previous Carmelite Rd location, but no sign of the
PFGO. Around 4 PM we drove to Maple Hill Park (41.443963 -74.439604), near
the corner of California Ave. and Maple Ave, in Wallkill. This location is
about 0.7 mi from Carmelite Rd. Almost immediately we spotted what we
initially thought was the PFGO. Continued inspection of the geese in the
area revealed a second individual of similar appearance. Our general
impression was PFGO, but neither looked quite right. Both individuals had a
dark brown head and general overall PFGO appearance. The bill of the first
individual was pinkish-orange with a dark tip while that of the second was
more extensively dark with limited pale pinkish-orange. The second
individual had flesh colored feet while those of the first had
yellowish-orange feet. The bill of both individuals appeared longer than
expected for a PFGO (Bean Goose like?) and both showed a faint light ear
patch (Canada Goose like?). Comparing our photographs of the two
individuals to the photographs posted by Richard Fried indicates that the
two Maple Hill individual are not the same as previously reported.

Photographs of the Maple Hill Park birds may be found at :
http://www.flickr.com/photos/awells48/

We are not sure what to call these two birds. Juvenile PFGO? Hybrid Canada x
Greylag? Something else? Any insight would be appreciated!! Thanks!

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach

2011-11-26 Thread Sy Schiff

Posted as requested

- Original Message - >

Hello Sy- Could you post this to the NY Birding list for methanks.

Jones Beach State Park Sat. 11/26:

There was a late season common egret east of the fishing piers on the
bayside of Jones Beach State Park (Parking Field 10) a little before
4pm today (Saturday). It was subsequently also seen by Paul and Martha
Horman.

This was in addition to several nice looks at the ash throated
flycatcher along the fishermen's road at the previously noted location
around 12:30PM or so. After roosting in a small tree it flew off to
the east, one of the other birders present said "it looked like it
was heading back to the Coast Guard Station". I did not linger in the
area so I cant comment further on that.

FYI- for anybody interested in late season butterflies there were
several orange sulphurs nectaring on the dandelions in the fenced in
yard of the Coast Guard Station.

[nysbirds-l] 11/26- Blue-gray Gnatcatcher in Brooklyn

2011-11-26 Thread fresha2411
This morning the Blue-gray Gnatcatcher continued at Coney Island Creek Park,
calling frequently and feeding actively, near a Ruby-crowned Kinglet.
It was originally found by Shane Blodgett on Thanksgiving morning.

Also of interest there were ~170 Bonaparte's Gulls in Gravesend Bay (including
over 50 that floated all the way up Coney Island Creek until they were adjacent
to Kaiser Park), and 17 White-winged Scoters that flew in from the inlet and
landed near the base of the Brooklyn tower of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

At Floyd Bennett Field there are ~15 Field Sparrows spread between two
different locations, which is reasonably notable for the date as far as I know.

Good Birding

[nysbirds-l] Niagara River - 12 species of gulls; White Pelican

2011-11-26 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
It really felt strange to be birding under such balmy conditions while
looking at so many gulls. Betsy and I met Jean Iron, Ron Pittaway, and
Kevin McLaughlin at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario where we had distant views
of the RAZORBILL. The bird was not in front of the walls of the old fort,
as it usually is, but further out and to the left (we were standing almost
directly across from the old fort).

The WHITE PELICAN at Jack Custers bird sanctuary, first reported to Ontbirds
this Friday, was present today, on what seems to be a much too small pond
for a bird this size. I was hoping to see the wing pattern to rule out the
possibility of an exotic pelican species but did not. Still, it appears to
be a juvenile and is likely an American. This bird is on Concession Road 7,
about ½ mile south of Niagara Stone Road, west of Virgil, in the Town of
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.

BONAPARTE’S GULLS continue in good numbers on the river while HERRING GULLS
continue to build but are still well below peak numbers. Diversity was
excellent with 12 species of gulls found, although that includes singles of
GLAUCOUS GULL (found by Brad Carlson and Gary Chapin, the one we missed),
THAYER’S GULL, and FRANKLIN’S GULLS at the power plants (viewed from the
Adam Beck overlook), a single BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE at the Whirlpool Aero
Car (found by Brad and Gary), and an adult CALIFORNIA GULL at Adam Beck
(found very late in the day by Betsy). The latter bird was an exciting end
to a fun day of gull-watching, especially for a certain someone who is at
315 species in Ontario this year (congratulations Barb!). Other gulls were
the expected Ring-billed and Great Black-backed, about 11 LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULLS (above the falls and at Adam Beck), four LITTLE GULLS
(Niagara-on-the-Lake at the Razorbill spot, two downriver from the Queenston
boat ramp, and a first-winter bird at the Whirlpool), and about six ICELAND
GULLS at the power plants.

>From what I heard, nobody saw any Black Vultures today.

Good birding!

Willie

[nysbirds-l] Black Headed Gull at Riis Park, Rockaways

2011-11-26 Thread Richard Fleming
After failing to locate the Ross' Goose at Floyd Bennett Field this morning
(11/26), I cycled across the bridge to Riis park, where I found an adult
winter plumaged Black Headed Gull standing on the beach within the half
circle formed by the promenade at the western end of the park, along with
some 150 Ring Billed Gulls. Many Red Throated Loons and parties of Common
Eider were just offshore. (About 25 Horned Larks were at Floyd Bennett
field, in the grassy area to the north of the astroturf soccer pitches).

[nysbirds-l] Montauk Pt. & Vicinity (Suffolk Co.)

2011-11-26 Thread ken feustel
An atypical (weather-wise) late November at Montauk Pt. yielded a good loon
flight, with Red-throated Loons in the majority, a small numbers of Razorbills
(19), and a fair number of Bonaparte's Gulls (90). Scoters and Eiders were in
the thousands, but the majority of large flocks were well offshore. The weather
was just too pleasant for good birds. The previously reported Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher put in an appearance on the south side of the Point, call ing
frequently in the warm sun. At Deep Hollow Ranch, the Canada Goose flock with
the single White-fronted Goose was on the south side of Montauk Highway. At
Duryea's Lobster Deck on the east side of Fort Pond Bay,Bob Kurtz discovered a
Brown Pelican sleeping on top of one of the mooring poles. At the Town Park at
the west end of Navy Road a walk out on the dock into Fort Pond Bay yielded
excellent, close looks at eight Red-necked Grebes, the only grebes we saw all
day. A few Laughing Gulls were still present at the Point and Lake Montauk
jetty. At Napeague Harbor we did not see the Snowy Owl, but reliable Lazy Point
Larry (the Lesser Black-backed Gull) was on station, and four species of
shorebirds were on the flats.

[nysbirds-l] Two Selasphorus

2011-11-26 Thread Hugh McGuinness
Dear NY Birders,

For the record: As of last Wednesday there were two Selasphorus
Hummingbirds on the South Fork (Suffolk Co.). Both are on private property
and cannot be visited by birders. I am looking for a bander who might want
to come out to the East End and band these birds. The bird in Southampton
has been present for nearly a month and the East Hampton bird for about a
week. One appears to be an immature male and the other an adult female.

[nysbirds-l] Ross' Goose and Harlequin Duck, plus Lenoir Preserve Hummingbirds

2011-11-26 Thread Seth Ausubel
The Ross' Goose was still on the lawn at the Brooklyn Golf Center across from
the Aviator Sports entrance to Floyd Bennett Field late this afternoon. An
immature male Harlequin Duck was off the fisherman's parking lot at Fort
Tilden. There were about 500 Bonaparte's Gulls feeding offshore. The Rufous
Hummingbird continues at Lenoir Preserve in Yonkers. The second hummingbird
there is a Ruby-throated.

[nysbirds-l] Eastport, Pond/Sod fields/Bike path

2011-11-26 Thread Patrick Santinello
A fairly nice array of ducks on Eastport pond this AM. Still quite a number
of Ring-necked Ducks (~80) along with small numbers of Canvasback (7), Am.
Wigeon (~18), Lesser Scaup (4), Gadwall (2) along with Black Duck, Mallard,
Ruddy Duck. Along the western shore of the pond toward the north end just
before the pond opens up to the northwest "cove" was a Black-crowned Night
Heron.

Still a fair amount of shore birds on the Sod field that is at the
intersection of Eastport Manor Road and Head of the Neck Road, dozens of
Black-bellied Plover along with around a couple dozen Least Sandpipers.
Nothing that I could detect at the larger sod fields along Cty Road 51.

I had a couple Golden-crowned Kinglets at the Cty Road 51 bike path as well
as one Eastern Bluebird.

Cheers,

Patrick Santinello

Westchester County Plans to CLOSE Edith Read Wildlife Sanctuary and 5
other Nature Centers, and lay off the Curators/Naturalists.
As you may be aware, Westchester County's proposed 2012 budget includes
210 layoffs and further cuts across many departments. A large percentage of
these layoffs and cuts have come from the Conservation Division of the
Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, including the closing of
all six nature centers and cancellation of all wildlife monitoring, habitat
maintenance, and nature education programs. This Division is entrusted
with protecting the natural resources of County parkland, and these layoffs
further erode environmental programs that have already been reduced. Further

[nysbirds-l] Montauk Pt. Vicinity (Suffolk Co.)

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach

2011-11-26 Thread Sy Schiff

Posted as requested

- Original Message -

Hello Sy- Could you post this to the NY Birding list for methanks.

Jones Beach State Park Sat. 11/26:

There was a late season common egret east of the fishing piers on the
bayside of Jones Beach State Park (Parking Field 10) a little before
4pm today (Saturday). It was subsequently also seen by Paul and Martha
Horman.

This was in addition to several nice looks at the ash throated
flycatcher along the fishermen's road at the previously noted location
around 12:30PM or so. After roosting in a small tree it flew off to
the east, one of the other birders present said it looked like it
was heading back to the Coast Guard Station. I did not linger in the
area so I cant comment further on that.

FYI- for anybody interested in late season butterflies there were
several orange sulphurs nectaring on the dandelions in the fenced in
yard of the Coast Guard Station.

Thanks!
