Re: net books with jaws.
Ok...I'm just going to clerify some things here. 1. This list, as the mod said, is for discussing _audio_ only topics. 2. Some people aren't using google. Googling netbook, jaws - or some other variation would be your first start. 3. Why are you replying to another message and changing the subject all together? This makes the archives, if any, harder to navigate. 4. Of course jaws will work with these netbooks, as most of them come with windows xp home. 5. In response to Kens message, I think the acer lineup come with iether a 120 or 160 gb hard drive. There might be solid state configurations but I'm not positive and have yet to see one. Mind you, I recommend the asus eee lineup over anything. contact details: email: tcwoo...@shaw.ca and others msn: the_conman...@hotmail.com skype: the_conman283 system details: Hp pavillion dv5220CA notebook pc AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology ML-37 2.0 GHZ, 1024 mb DDR ram, Fujitsu 100 gb 4500 RPM Hard Drive, connecsant AC-link audio - Original Message - From: "Julio" To: "'PC Audio Discussion List'" Sent: Thursday, February 26, 2009 6:34 PM Subject: net books with jaws. Patch bay settings in Delta software
For Larry and anyone who might find it useful, hee are the settings for my Delta card software. this is under patch bay router tab.Remember too under the Monitor Mixer tab, where the sliders are located, there are settings for each set of faders to link the faders and to mute input or output relating to those faders. So be sure the inputs or out puts you want aren't muted in the relevant check boxes. Not too hot at exlaining these things, but hope it might have helped. Ray. I find I can monitor input whilst recording with the setting under H/W/Out 1/2 I have the radio button checked for Monitor Mixer (This is the middle setting the others being Wave out 1/2 and SDIF in as well as SDIF reverse. there are three more columns headed Wave out xx which are blank, this being a stereo mixer. the others no doubt come into play with a multi-channel soundcard. I have the M Audio Delta Audiophile and in general, I like it. I do a lot of audio editing and I haven't found a card that I like better for the purpose. I also stream a lot of audio from the computer to the rest of the house and again, the sound is superior. then there is the patch pannel with dedicated jacks for each channel. Again, excellent! Also, I can record line in while working on other things as no screen reader interference bleeds through the recording. Now then, what don't I like. Well there are a couple of things on that side of the score book too. First, there is no dedicated microphone jack. Second, changing levels while using a screen reader can be a bit awkward. Finally, when recording line in content, I can't get the card to play what's being recorded through my speakers. It should be noted that this last issue might be a result of me being unable to figure out how to set the card so that it will monitor content while recording. I've written to M Audio support to inquire, but so far with no response. Right now, I deal with the situation by recording a bit of audio and then playing it back to test levels and so on. Still, given the superior results that I've achieved when editing, plus its overall superior sound quality, I would definitely buy another one for one of my other PCs. Re: restricting audio rights to synthesized voices ...
Peter, Actually, you're quoting an excerpt from Roy Blount Jr.s' op/ed piece in yesterday's New York Times. As President, he speaks for the Authors Guild. The Guild's position is much more nuanced. Here's what Blount goes on to say in that column concerning the Kindle and our concerns as visually impaired readers: On the National Federation of the Blind’s Web site , the guild is accused of arguing that it is illegal for blind people to use “readers, either human or machine, to access books that are not available in alternative formats like Braille or audio.” In fact, publishers, authors and American copyright laws have long provided for free audio availability to the blind and the guild is all for technologies that expand that availability. (The federation, though, points out that blind readers can’t independently use the Kindle 2’s visual, on-screen controls.) But that doesn’t mean Amazon should be able, without copyright-holders’ participation, to pass that service on to everyone. - Original Message - From: "Peter Alan Smith: psmit...@post.harvard.edu" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Thursday, February 26, 2009 9:38 AM Subject: restricting audio rights to synthesized voices ... Walt Mossberg of the WSJ today sang the praises of the new Amazon Kindle. But he cited the warning that the Authors Guild has publicly released: Kindle 2 can read books aloud. And Kindle 2 is not paying anyone for audio rights. True, you can already get software that will read aloud whatever is on your computer. But Kindle 2 is being sold specifically as a new, improved, multimedia version of books–every title is an e-book and an audio book rolled into one. And whereas e-books have yet to win mainstream enthusiasm, audio books are a billion-dollar market, and growing. Audio rights are not generally packaged with e-book rights. They are more valuable than e-book rights. Income from audio books helps not inconsiderably to keep authors, and publishers, afloat….You may be thinking that no automated read-aloud function can compete with the dulcet resonance of Jim Dale reading ‘Harry Potter’ or of authors, ahem, reading themselves. RE: cannot merge files with either MP3 direct cut or MP3 merger
There is a simple way to do this using the command line. I'll leave out the details, because it's a little geeky nowadays, but from the command line, once you've pointed to the folder where the files are, let's say the series of files all start with "my book" use this command to put them all in one file Copy /b "my book*.mp3" "my new book.mp3" Dean -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Joanne Sent: Thursday, February 26, 2009 5:28 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: cannot merge files with either MP3 direct cut or MP3 merger I wanted to put several chapters of a show into one whole show, but when I use MP3 Merge it only puts one file in the output folder; doesn't recognize the other files in the selected group. I could be missing a step there so if anyone knows what I might be doing wrong please let me know. I also have MP3 Direct Cut, but I can't find the append to file in menus anywhere. It might be a newer version and this got removed, I don't know. Would I be better off getting an older version of this?
