RE: update on multi track recorder with speech guidance
I have the LS-7 and like it. I don't use it for recording music; I'm not a musician, but I have used it to make audio recordings. The audio quality is excellent, especially if you turn ON the central microphone. The LS-7 is about the same size as the DM-series of Olympus recorders, and it has three mics -- two that angle out to either side of the recorder and one in the middle. It does have some weaknesses. I don't like the button placement. Unlike other Olympus recorders, the buttons are on the top, not the sides, so, if you put it in a case, you can push the buttons by mistake. Second, you have to push the Record button twice -- once to put it in "pause" mode and a second time to actually start recording. In a noisy room, it's often hard for me to hear the beeps that indicate I've pushed it a second time or whether it's gone into Pause mode. Third is the case. The previous Olympus recorders I have owned had a nice case with a "kickstand"stand" on the back that let you position the recorder upright. This recorder has a cheap case, kind of like a glov, you put the recorder into. I hate it. In fact, I'm using one of my old cases for my LS-7. It does have full voice guidance -- except for getting System information (how much memory you have left, etc) and a couple of other menu items that don't read. That's my thumbnail review. The built in microphones can handle sound pressure levels up to 140 decibals, so it will record live bands with clarity and no distortion. Re: update on multi track recorder with speech guidance
Here are the details on this Olympus LS-100, although there is no mention here of speech output: Olympus has announced the latest addition to its popular LS series of digital recorders with the addition of the LS-100 linear PCM audio recorder. Aimed at musicians and audio enthusiasts, it comes with a combination of professional interconnects, high quality sound recording, multitracking and extra features in a convenient pocket size. Olympus LS-100 Audio Recorder It’s an impressive little device with a matching list of features - two internal 90-degree directional stereo condenser microphones with a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz and capable of capturing sound pressure levels up to 140 dB (which is about as loud as you’d really want to get). - uncompressed 24 bit/96 kHz Linear PCM digital recording saved to the internal 4GB memory or on SD (up to 2GB) / SDHC (up to 32GB) / SDXC (up to 64GB) cards. - separate audio and system circuitry to keep the signal clean. - low cut filter at either 100 Hz or 300 Hz to eliminate low frequency background noise. - two quarter-inch XLR / standard phone combo jacks, supporting phantom power at 48/24 volts to power high-quality external microphones. - 8 track multitracking, with independent volume and pan control. - tuner and metronome. - Lissajous measurement which shows the phase difference betweenthe left and right mics. - direct CD mastering. - 2″ LCD screen and all-metal body. “The Olympus LS series has been a favourite of musicians, artists and music lovers, and the LS-100 is an evolution in this series designed with the working musician, specifically, in mind,” said Amy Leslie, Sr. Marketing & Business Development Manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc. “For songwriting sessions, band rehearsals, live performances, broadcasting, or really anything that requires the highest quality of audio recording, the LS-100 is an ideal, all-encompassing recording solution.” Nevermind all that, it just looks cool. Full details on the LS-100 are here and it will be available from all good stores in February 2012 for $399. RE: B&W MM-1 speakers
It's a subjective judgment, I know, but I find the B&W MM-1 speakers much superior to the Bose I have, which I disconnected and put away as soon as I heard the MM-1 quality. They're clear, the sound is full, the bass is balanced, and I hear words and musical moments I hadn't heard before. Installation was easy, and I needed no sighted assistance. The toggle control for on/stand-by is located on the left side of the power speaker. It isn't a button and it isn't recessed, but it sits between the upper and lower bands of cloth that circle the speaker. Similar controls appear on the right for lowering and raising the volume. To lower the volume, press the forward part of the horizontal band between the cloth, and to raise volume press the partner the back. As I understand it, the speakers bypass the PC's sound card, which surely helps maintain their quality. B&W uses lit-up color codes on the power speaker to indicate various states. Red indicates off, blue on, slow-flashing blue stand-by. When connected to the PC for a firmware upgrade, the light switches to white. With this set, I find that the speakers turn off when the computer is turned off. The light turns to red. When I want to restore sound after the computer has rebooted, I need to take out and then reinsert the USB connection, then press the side of the power speaker to turn it on. When this operation succeeds, my system issues a confirming beep. Here's my reservation. The power speaker gets hot. I have it in a desk cabinet, but I've made sure it has plenty of space around it. Still, I'm sufficiently concerned that I routinely turn them off when I'm not listening to anything. I should have kept my Bose connected because I now lose JAWS's and MS's sound alerts. The Bose connected through the regular audio terminals at the back of my Dell, not a USB connection. The only B&W update currently available for the speakers appears to have no real value for me. As I understand it, it keeps the speakers on standby during a reboot. On reflection, I prefer they go off completely, other than receiving power from the power cord (which does not cause the heat problem). IF B&W ever replies to my request for assistance with regard to updating, I'll post their suggestion. I suggest you read the reviews at Amazon.com for more customer reactions: http://www.amazon.com/Bowers-Wilkins-Multimedia-computer-speaker/dp/B003R6U6 HG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322861412&sr=8-1 The reviews at Amazon.co.uk are also helpful. At the time I was buying, it was two customers there who talked about the heat problem. Like me, at least one customer reported concerns about B&W's tech support. A note for US consumers. When I purchased the MM-1s two weeks ago, Amazon was selling it at $499 through J&R. I used another seller on that same page, Geminigadget, which offered the speakers at $50 less, with shipping included. The speakers arrived in three days. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of André van Deventer Sent: Wednesday, December 21, 2011 12:52 AM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: B&W MM-1 speakers Adrian Except for the update issue, are they really worth the extra cost do you think? Do they sound better than other speakers? According to the literature they do sound easy to operate. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: 21 December 2011 06:43 AM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: B&W MM-1 speakers Replying to my own post, I've figured out how to get the speakers restarted. It took the proverbial sighted assistant to observe the color changes that indicate progress, but once we figured that part out, I understood how to do it without help. If anyone is interested, I'll give details. Meanwhile, I'm still perplexed about how to make the MM-1 Updater produce results. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: Tuesday, December 20, 2011 5:16 PM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: B&W MM-1 speakers A posting on this list alerted me to these speakers, and comments on Amazon spoke glowingly. They make a wonderful sound. However, I tried in vain to use the MM-1 firmware to update them, and now not only are they not updated; they don't even work. I've written twice to B&W via their website, but I've received no response. does anyone have suggestions? Thereby, a new option has been embedded in all YouTube downloading software. Now it is possible with one click to enable compatibility with screen reading software in the Options menu of the main program window. The new functionality was tested with NVDA screen readers. Thus all users can enjoy using DVDVideoSoft software again without any limitation.
