I have seen posts here on this product. Not really sure if it would be of

PESO-Lens Test

2006-03-08 Thread Walter Hamler
I recently procured an old screw mount Pentax 300mm f/4 manual lens to use
for Astrophotography. Here is a test shot taken with the lens. This is hand
held, f/5.6, about 1/350 sec.

Re:No Green Button,AE-L button

2006-03-08 Thread Walter Hamler
In the Custom Function Menu, enable the use of Aperture Ring.
Then an "A" lens will do everything but autofocus, all modes work. A manual
(K lens)works only in M mode and once an aperture is selected, and the
stopdown lever moved , the display will show exposure over/under in
full/tenths (ie, 2.5) .Adjust shutter to 0.0. If you want to shoot WO, then
P, M, and A will still give correct exposure.
In practice I find this pretty easy. I make one exposure reading and
shoot/check exposure on lcd. Then I can change f stop or shutter speed and
reshoot/check as I go.
I have found that sometimes the image I get on the lcd is not properly
exposed after I download to computer. Don't know why, but if I look at the
histogram it usually gives a more accurate indication of a proper exposure.
Just my .02 worth, and probably about all it's worth.

Sorry guys for not including data. I was using my ist DL with a SMC 200mm

For you aviation buffs there was also a CF-104 there as well. The only
flying 104 in the world now according to the announcers. I remember my very
first air show in 1958 where a 104 went supersonic during the flyby.
Yesterday this one came VERY close at around 680 K. However, it was obvious
when the F-15 made its high speed passes that it was quicker and noisier!

PhotoShop Elements 4.0

2006-03-20 Thread Walter Hamler
I have seen this program memtioned here in reference to using with Pentax
Raw files. Another program was also mentioned, Adobe Camera Raw. Am I
correct in assuming that ACR is included with the Elements 4.0, or is it a

I am ready to buy a new computer system to support my ist DL appetite for

well. My old 2.0 won't be the best choice I am sure, but it does work for

Printing Raw Files

2006-03-25 Thread Walter Hamler
OK, I just got a new computer and bought PS Elements 4.0. I upgraded Adobe
Camera Raw to ver 3.3. Shot some RAW files, imported them into the ACR
editor, tweaked. Then I noticed that there is no print tab or capability
from the editor. I saved to a file using the default RAW file structure.
Then I could open in Elements and further manipulate, etc, and print.
Why can you not print the file from the ACR editor, and are there any loses
when you save in the default raw file structure?

Yes, I agree about Maya.
I think she had so many things against her back then. She was a young
woman, Asian, and relatively unknown in the field. There were probably
others.
I remember one of the strongest objections was the fact that it was
essentially underground. Folks were used to the imposing landmark
monuments on the mall and other areas of DC. As it turns out, that
aspect has proven to be its strongest character, in my opinion. I can
remember one day walking around the mall, just looking for picture
opportunities, and litterly stumbled upon it. Especially if you come
up to it from behind the three soldier statues who gaze upon it. It
really jumps out to you and is very evocative in its impact.

Re: PESO: Sort of. My first love.

2008-01-18 Thread Walter Hamler
Great pic Paul. It brings back memories to me as well, but only from a
rank amateur's perspective.
I was out in the CA Mojave desert in Ridgecrest from 62 to 64. Bought
my first car, a 62 Impala SS that I eventually modified and ran as a C
Modified Production. It was a dog because of the Powerglide trans but
kept me entertained for about 18 months.
At the local drag strip in Inyokern I got to rub elbows with folks
like Stone, Woods and Cook, Hayden Proffett, and Big John Mazmanian.
Even saw Shirley Sheehan sever times when she was running FX'ers. I
vividly remember a race between her in a 4 speed (can't remember the
car type) and an opponent with a 3 speed of the exact same make. They
tried 3 times and every time was a draw. Back then at that site, the
winner was determined by a flagman, who couldn't see like timing
lights, but it was fun anyway.
Interestingly, I hear that the old airport at Inyokern is now used to
produce all those hideous car commercials defying all kinds of stupid
scenarios!
Anyway, thanks for the memories!!

Re: FF Sensor from Sony

2008-01-30 Thread Walter Hamler
Well, I would say that if Pentax survives another 5 years and longer
then a FF sensor is almost inevitable.

However, in my case, it makes no difference. I am in the hunt for
lenses, not bodies. Some of the lenses that have shown up on the
roadmap are just what I am looking for, namely the 17~70 and the
60~250. Tamron has announced a 10~24 that is also a "lust after"
option. Maybe Pentax has something similar in the wings.

I can see getting a K20 next year, when the "new" camera is announced
and prices come down somewhat. At that point I will be most likely
Satiated and ready to drop out of the pixel chase forever! :-)

Re: Pentax Bellows

It was 18.00 with shipping. I figure to get the m-42 to K adapter and
then pick up M-42 lenses or else get an M-39 to M-42 adapter and use
Leica thread enlarging lenses. JCO was kind enough to remind me of
that option. Much like the old Heiland Reponar Slide Duplicator, it
allowed different camera bodies via t-tings and different lenses via
female camera adapters.

Update on Bellows.

2008-02-14 Thread Walter Hamler
The Pentax bellows arrived. Very tiny and lightweight. You can tell it
was made for a Pentax screw mount and that lenses were much smaller
back then.

Interesting sidenote, the guy I bought it from lives in Concord, CA. I
used to live there as well so we traded notes. Turns out he was on
Guam right after I left in 68 and before I returned in 72. He bought
the bellows over there through the Navy Exchange (BX).

I discovered last night that a K mount t-2 adapter will screw on the
M-42 threads on the rear, making attachment to the K mount bodies a
cinch. Also, since it is so tiny, the prism/flash protusion doesn't
interfer with the bellows. Now I just have to wait for the M39 adapter
to arrive to put an enlarging lens on for some test shots. I have an
old Leitz 100mm f/4 lens from a Focomat I used to own. It should be a
good choice.

Hey John, didn't know you were there also. I bet it has changed a lot
since the 70's !
I received the M42-M39 adapter today and have mounted an 80mm

Sure hope I haven't misplaced it !!
Only taken a few shots but the results are very promising and the
metering is dead on in "A" mode.
There is a K mount 100mm bellows lens on KEH but I don't know how I
could adapt it to a screw mount bellows. Anyone have any ideas?

Aperture operation on film bodies

2008-02-20 Thread Walter Hamler
OK. I am clueless.

I put the 18~55 DA lens on the K1000 body thinking it would only work
at WO aperture because it has no aperture simulator. However, when I
actually looked at a slow shutter speed, it appears to be stopping
down to 16 or 22. I tried my other DA lenses and the same thing. Why
is my thinking wrong here?

I shot a series of exposures at 21mm setting, and the prints show a
definite vignette, but the usable area is much bigger than the digital
sensor size. I am going to scan some negs and crop to see how an 8x11
looks.

Somebody please tell me how this stuff really works :-)

Walt

BTW, the Alt-Print Screen does nothing to capture a screen shot. My
keyboard says "System Required" on the Print Screen key. ???

Damn I'm dumb!!

I was expecting "something" to happen when I hit the Alt-Prt Scr keys.
I did it again, then opened the Word program and pasted. Voila! There
it was.
Now I guess I just cut and paste that into the email page? What is
the best way?

Also, thanks to those who answered the question on the aperture
simulator. Now I understand. Really makes sense now.

Re: Lunar Eclipse Picture

2008-02-21 Thread Walter Hamler
John, check out http://www.telescope.com
They sell adapters for 1.25" and 2" focusers that use t-mount adapters
to attach a camera to a scope.

If you have a refractor reaching focus should not be a problem. A
reflector might offer problems in that there may not be enough infocus
travel to reach focus. That usually requires physically moving the
mirror forward an inch or two.

Another problem concerns the size of the secondary mirror in a newt.
They usually are sized for eyepieces, not cameras. This will create
problems with field illumination, ie, severe vignetting. Going up to a
bigger secondary mirror means buying parts that can cost 50 bucks or
more.

What size. type scope do you have?

Slide Scanning at Costco

2008-02-22 Thread Walter Hamler
I believe this was discussed recently.

I took 10 slides to the local Costco. They scanned and put on cd for
2.90, including the cd. The images are about 2100 dpi, avg 3.2 meg
each file. JPEG only unfortunately.

However, the quality was excellent. I thought I was getting ok results
from my HP scanner at 2400 dpi but the prints from these are much
better than I had been able to do from my scans.

Tomorrow I will be selecting from my large archive the slides I want
to archive on cd's. At that price it will be worth paying someone
else. Also, they were fast. Had the job done in 30 minutes!

Re: Film in, digital out...

2008-02-24 Thread Walter Hamler
Scott, I am not up to speed on the newest generation of printers. I
have two Epsons, 1800 and 800. They use the same cartridges so makes
ink situation easier. However, both are outdated and I am finding inks
difficult to get locally. Web dealers are no problem and are much
cheaper anyway.
One of the young salespersons at the local camera dealer has one of
the newer Epsons with the latest generation of inks. He shows me
prints all the time. They look no different than what I have come to
expect from my older versions. He does say the newer one sucks up ink
must faster than his older 1800.
Ibelieve the printer manufacturers are in collusion to sell printers
cheap, ink is expensive, and the technology changes every 6 to 9
months to keep the game going! :-)
A friend has the Epson Photo flatbed scanner that others mention. I
produces very good results. He in fact uses it to scan his Mamiya 6x7
negs (B&W) and has nice 11x14's and 16x20's to prove it works well. He
gets all his printing done at a regular full service lab that prints
really great B&W's from digital files.
Darkrooms are nice, relaxing, and feed your zen, but they really
aren't necessary anymore :-)

When we first moved here to the Orlando area, there were stories going
round about a recent event where two local police officers had to kill

amount. Supposedly took over 200 rounds to finally kill it.
Afterwards, folks started bringing forth stories of missing animals,
mostly dogs and cats, but some small pigs were also included.
Now, the stories out of South FL, Everglades area, of lots of large
snakes, Boas, etc, that are breeding like rats after being turned
loose by owners because they were getting too expensive to feed!

Re: Costco slide scanning

Gee, those are terrible!
I must say that the photo lab staff at the store I used are very
knowledgable and know the technology. They showed me the equipment and
the scanner alone was 60,000.00. It is attached to one of the Noritsu
machines so it can make prints if ordered or it just spits out the
cd's. They monitor each scan and tweak as necessary.
I suspect you are up against some newby's that don't understand fully
what they are doing.

Re: PESO: Antarctica Slide Scan

2008-03-06 Thread Walter Hamler
Amita, I just saw your response so I am late answering.

I was assigned to the navy squadron that provided logistic support to
the National Science Foundation efforts in Antarctica. We
prepositioned from Pt. Mugu, CA to Christchurch, NZ each year in late
August/early Sept. First flights to McMurdo, Antarctica were usually
in early Sept with continuous flights almost daily to ferry equipment,
supplies and people into McMurdo.

The two years I was attached to the squadron were probably the most
frustrating ever for the squadron and the NSF. Both years saw several
planes involved in serious crashes and subsequent retrevial
activities. One area, called Dome Charley, the third highest plateay
dome on the continent, saw two planes crash in one day. A third plane
had to rescue the crews of the other two. To say the least, we were
very concerned for several days!

Eventually, the following year, both planes were repaired and
recovered. I still remember the day that two severly crippled, but
flying, C-130's flew back to McMurdo. I left the squadron later that
year and the following years saw two more planes recovered from other
crash sites.

BTW, I was the Photographic Officer in the squadron, supposedly in
charge of the aerial mapping photography taskings we had.
Unfortunately, the first plane to crash the first year was our one and
only camera equipped aircraft. Such luck!!!

Re: Antarctica Photos

2008-03-18 Thread Walter Hamler
Yes, they were shot in 75 - 77, mostly late 76.

I suspect McMurdo has changed quite a bit as most of the older wooden
buildings there have been replaced with more modern and more durable
materials.

As for the terrain, I doubt there would be much actual change as the
snow/ice accumulate and disipate every year. Antarctica is dryer than
any desert on earth and also has very little precipative snow. 99 % of
the snow that needs removing when a new summer season begins each year
is from wind blown redistribution of the snow from other areas of the
continent.

Some of the hype that is reported as to global warming causing
disaster with the Penguin rookeries is simply overblowing of changes
in the coastlines due to sea water freezing and melting every year. It
is a constant flux of changes every year that has been going on for
tens of thousands of years.

I understand that this current summer season saw some pretty thick ice
in the McMurdo area that was tough to remove, yet other areas of the
continent saw little to no ice buildup. It is all a matter of knowing
the difference between "weather" and "climate". In the case of
Antarctica, that difference is very hard to determine!

Re: Antarctica Photos

2008-03-19 Thread Walter Hamler
Well, let's think that through. The pics were shot in the late 70's!

Does bring up a great point however. Navigation when flying down there
back then was very difficult. The C-130's were equipped with a special
nav system that had been optimized for polar use. It seems that
conventional (then) navaids (LORAN) did not work, primarily because
support infrastructure did not exist.
The experimental system we used was a prototype inertial nav system.
However, it required constant updates. The problem with that was that
the system to do that did not work very well !
Many a flight was started using the nav system and it would fail half
way there. That's ok on a 200 mile trip, but Antarctica is a HUGE
continent and many flights were 12 to 14 hours at 280 knots, baring
winds. I gained a lot of respect for the pilots and flight crews back
then, believe me.
