How thick is the original romote plug?

Hans,

I am half way through making one of these. The problem is - correct me
if I am wrong - that the base of the plug is too large and you can't
push it all the way in. I suspected this and too my camera along when
I went to buy the plug and proceeded to try different style of plug in
it.

None of them fitted and I ended up with a choice to make. Either buy a
plug and grind part of it away so that it fits. Or, buy a mobile phone
portable hands free with the correct plug and cut the mic and earphone
off it and connect the switch (this gives a nice molded plug at the
end). Or buy a 3.5 to 2.5mm converter that has a tapered 2.5mm plug
that actually fits and put a 3.5mm plug on the switch. Because the
only time I ever use this is when I have the bellows connected to the
*istD, it doesn't really matter to me which option I used, but I went
for the 3.5 to 2.5 converter because it allows me to still use the same
setup with the MZ-S or even the Z1p or MZ3. I have made the switch box
so that I can screw the normal double cable release of the bellows into
it to trigger the camera. I can't live without my bellows.

Hi Rob and all,

yes, I made the mistake - I've got the 3.5mm one.

Thanks for your help and best regards, Hans.

Hi Hans,

I just measured the plug, it's definitely 2.5mm, it's base is only 6.6mm
diameter and just fits in the depression on the *ist D body. This is why I
chose a moulded assembly for my cable as solder types are generally much larger
behind the connector (it's also very conveniently L shaped so the cable exits
without causing undue stress on the camera socket).

Markus,

Unfortunatly there is no way to reset the defaults in the current
condition. The camera will only blink the empty battery symbol at me.
None of the buttons, or dials work :-(

Thanks though,

Try using the batteries either in the camera or the grip only, not in
both battery compartments.

David,

THANK YOU!! I went ahead and recharged my rechargeables, and
moved all of the alkalines off into a pile. The rechargables just
finished recharging and I tossed them right into the grip . . . low and
behold, the camera is now fine. That gave me quite a start. I guess
the thing to do is to buy another set or two of rechargables, adn
always have them ready.

Back to photography,

charged
them but they died while waiting to be used, I guess. So I'd say try
another set of batteries, but not alkalines, and see if it helps.

told me that the Battery Depleted, so I went in, grabbed some fresh
AA's and put them in both the grip and the body . . . it still
complained about low batteries, so I ran out to the local market and
picked up a pair of 2016 button batteries. It's still telling me it
has low batteries.

Actually, I'm quite impressed with the reliability of the *ist D. I've
shot more than 3000 frames without a problem. I think there were some
initial build defects (I sent my first camera back), but I haven't
heard many reports of genuine in-use failures. Most reported failures
have proved to be merely operator error, or as in Bill's example, dead
batteries.

Have you checked the electrical contacts - they may be dirty, oxidised or
otherwise damaged?

And - Yes digital users have to put up with a lot (RAMcards, cardreaders,
computers, batteries, printers, cartridges etc.). Just not film developers,
tanks, water and chemical containers, enlargers etc. :-)
